The Assassin’s Chronicles

Part One
In Search of Souls

“Death comes in many forms. You can die by the hands of a God. You can die by the hands of a man. You can even die by the hands of a man, due to the word of a God. Death is the reason I was put on this Earth. There’s no escapin’ that. But how much death can one man bring before it is brought to him as well?”

- Astrolanoid Direlios

Astrolanoid Direlios, said to be the most dangerous man in the world. A professional assassin, claimed to have slain more than one million men. A servant of Camarant, whose incredible skill was unmatched. Nobody had ever even drawn his blood, or so it was told. As to where he had come from, it was unknown. Three years ago, he had appeared from nowhere. An entire camp of bandits was slaughtered; one man emerging from the carnage. Astrolanoid.

From that point, the horror began. Whenever somebody needed to die, Astrolanoid would ensure their death. Whenever a man came to possess a large sum of money, he soon came to possess a large sum of poison in his veins. Whenever a man doubted Astrolanoid’s power, he soon bore witness to it himself. All but the foolish feared him. And the foolish soon became the dead.

In actual fact, Astrolanoid lived a simple life once. He was a happy village child, with a loving family. He studied medical skills from his father, and never left his home. However, when Astrolanoid was twenty years of age, his life was destroyed. Bandits raided his village, slaying his entire family and burning his home. Mad with grief, he pursued them, sneaking into their encampment in the middle of a dark night.

Whilst creeping past one of the many tents, he spotted a glowing stone inside a small sack of loot. It was a bright ruby; radiant with a light that appeared to have no source. Curious, he grabbed hold of the gem. Time was stopped.

He was thrown into a dark dimension; the realm of Bilaporak, the Devil God. It was a place where age was halted. Bilaporak had summoned Astrolanoid, to enlist him as a servant. For three hundred year Bilaporak destroyed the young man’s mind; corrupting him and suppressing whatever light remained in his heart. He was trained in combat by the master of war himself, and learned to use every weapon imaginable. He developed a particular liking for knives and stealth-fighting; opting to forgo any magic training. Instead, Bilaporak created a pouch of enchanted stones, with different powers to provide for the lack of magical ability. Adhering to Astrolanoid’s personal preferences, Bilaporak transformed him into the most formidable assassin ever to walk the world. There was not a single thought in Astrolanoid’s mind that detracted from his undying loyalty to his new master.

After three hundred years of training, he was released. Astrolanoid found himself in the Bandits’ Camp. He had been told to do what he willed with his life until he received instructions from Bilaporak. It was then and there that he began his life of thievery and murder. For the next three years, Astrolanoid wondered if he would ever come into contact with his master. Was travelling the world and ending lives all he would do?

No, Astrolanoid was destined for much, much more...

***

“They say the day you lose yourself is the day you lose your life. But what of those who never found themselves in the first place? Are they not alive? Will they ever live? And what of those who know themselves, but hide away until not even the brightest of lights will detect them? What must a person do, once finding themself, to truly become that person they should be?”

- Tarvellin Verinos

Tarvellin Verinos was a simple man. Born ten years before Astrolanoid, he was a member of the Noble Verinos family, and a distant relative to the human ruler, King Arovam Servilate himself. He was treated like any noble, far superior to the commoners and peasants. He hated his childhood. He hated the fact that he received so much more than the common children. He held the belief that all beings were equal; regardless of status, appearance, gender, race and even their alignment. Nobody could convince him otherwise. He spent his early life doing everything he could to help the common people; a choice which angered his family greatly.

When he reached adulthood Tarvellin left the capital city and began exploring the world, as he had always dreamed. He never really knew what his purpose in life was. He had always believed that everyone was created with a task to fulfil; a task they could not avoid. However, it was their choice as to whether they performed that task for the sake of good, or the sake of evil. A blacksmith could sell his constructions to the King’s Army, or to criminals. A fisherman could feed others using his skill, or poison the fish and do business with assassins. Although, even an assassin could work for the sake of goodness, if they so wished. Anybody could.

But what was Tarvellin’s task? His dreams were to see the world and help people. He was an accomplished martial artist and fought with a staff, but was not a great fan of combat. He did not have any way of earning money, so what was he supposed to do? He could not help people; he had nothing to help them with. Simply travel until he could travel no longer?

No, Tarvellin was destined for much, much more...
