Zephyr sat in the Captain's chair, staring at the forward screen as he threw a handful of popcorn into his gaping beak. A month alone on the ship was starting to get to him, having no one to talk to besides the emotionless responses of the computer. Just for fun he tried talking to it and asked it questions he knew were a paradox to see what would happen. Once he actually had to replace a relay in the computer logic core, amd decided to keep that question to himself from then on.
Now, bored out of his mind, Zephyr had the massive view screen showing the forward view, with a picture in picture of a movie from Earth playing in the corner. Just as the movie was reaching the climax and he was leaning forward in his seat, an alarm went off and his movie stopped.
"There is a class B planet that has come into the range of our long range sensors. Approximately 3 earth days away." the computer said. Zephyr jumped, the feathers on the back of his neck stood on end.
"Show on display." he said, setting his popcorn bowl aside. The screen zoomed in on a rather blue planet as the environmental stats appeared around it. It was pretty close to Earth, but seemed to be almost 3/4 of it's size, "Is it inhabited?"
"There are faint energy readings detected. Insufficient range for a more accurate scan." Zephyr sighed, staring at the numbers of the screen.
"Set a course and wake the crew." he said.
"Course set 244 mark 192. Engines at full." it said, "Stasis disengaged. Beginning awakening process."
"Let me know when they are up." he said, and ducked into the captains office off the bridge to prepare his report.
Zephyr made his way to the mess hall, stopping on the way to check on Arvinia on the way. It looked like it would take a while longer for her to wake, so he left a pad with the briefing on a desk in the room she was in, and continued on.
Once he entered the mess hall, the smell of steak and bacon filled the air, making him hungry again even after the popcorn. But, instead of grabbing a plate, his excitement made him want to begin the meeting.
"I hope you all slept well." he said, "I was starting to get lonely."
"Well, the reason you are awake, is because of this." he said, pressing a button on the wall display. The information from the main bridge appeared with the stats for the new planet, "A class B planet, atmosphere and environment similar to Earth, but it's 3/4 the size so there's lesser gravity. We would all weigh a few kilos less there. As for inhabitants, I'm not sure at this point because we're too far away. There are energy readings coming from it. We won't know for sure until we get closer." Zephyr ruffled his feathers, feeling slightly nervous. It has been over a month since he had even spoken or seen another person, and years since he did any kind of public speaking.
"Most of what I have found is in the report." he said, opening a compartment in the wall. He removed enough pads for everyone and handed them out, "Any questions?"
