Post Animal Rights

The year is 2134. Mankind has strayed from their morals and begun toying with their very being. Genetic manipulation was legalized, bringing new subspecies to be born on the Earth. These beings were altered Humans, merged with the genes of animals possessing traits of the animals they were fused with, yet retaining human intelligence and overall form. These beings were simply called Ferals. Racism was abolished in the early 2000’s but a rise in Feral population brought a rise to a new form of racism. The human government thought of the Ferals as impure and a stain on the history of Mankind and therefore excluded them from all laws and charters. Because of this the Ferals created their own government and with human supporters, gained status with the rest of the world. Today, Ferals are considered equal to humans and are allowed equal rights and privileges.

During the early 2100’s, Ferals were forced to register with the Human government as a condition for equal rights. Registration meant global tracking, recording of all daily activities and transactions, and an overall observation of each and every individual. It was only recently, in the year 2120, that both a human and feral diplomat confront the issue and pass a new charter, stating that both races be equal. With such an effective system in place, Feral crimes were at an all time low and those who did break the law were easily caught and convicted. Not wanting to disable such a good crime prevention system, the governments agreed to require both Ferals and Humans to register, while disabling some of the features that would infringe upon the privacy act. Everyone is now required to have sub dermal implants in their hands, containing their ID and registration information. There were two types of implants, one designed for Ferals and a different kind for Humans. Identification relied on blood characteristics after all.

Such implants were already being used for such purposes by people who requested them. They are a great way to make purchases and log in to terminals wherever they may be. With the internet extended to other planets, the subspace network linked all ships, stations, colonies and even reached to the neighboring system.

Because of the previous laws, there was still some tension between the Ferals and the Humans. A Feral-Human relationship was unheard of and a half breed just didn’t exist. But times change, people began to think differently and only time would tell when such a person would be born.

Donta was that one. He was a half breed. Half human and half something else. His mother was what the Humans called a mutt. A mix of several breeds of Ferals but regardless, she was a thing of beauty. If he were to guess, she was part cat and part bat, with a little odds and ends of other species. He ended up pretty much the same, except much taller and thinner. He even inherited her pure white fur, and pink colored wings. It took a while for him to learn English because of his fangs, but once he did he said no words to tell he was part human. He knew Humans and Ferals went together like cereal and water. He didn’t want any soggy relationships with anyone. He could pick out his friends from what they thought of him because of who he is, not what he has in his blood.

Today was Donta’s first day at the Academy, but he took his time going to school. He had no idea what he wanted to be when he graduated and had no friends to speak to in this city. To make matters worse, he wasn’t properly registered. Since he was half Human and half Feral, there was no chip he could use, since they are species specific. Instead, his father had left him a special chip embedded in a wrist watch/communicator. This chip contained his information, but indicating that he was a full Feral. In this day and age, A half breed would cause trouble, so he kept it a secret. With the huge gates of the school looming above him, he waved his wrist in front of the scanner and the gate swung open, allowing him entry. With the press of a button, a holographic screen appeared in front of him, and he read his orientation information as he entered the school. He was late, but he didn’t care.

“Room 101, eh?” He sighed, “Better get this over with.” He brushed his white hair from the front of his face and rang the buzzer for room 101.
