"This Spades game is going to take forever." Cassandra said barely above a whisper, throwing out a heart and watching it being taken into another book by her partner. Normally Spades was a very crafty game and those who play need to pay attention but her mind momentarily drifted off from the game, not able to keep her hand or legs steady. Anticipation rattled her bones, nibbling on her bottom lip. She waited.
A whole day, she waited. She was referred by her Supervisor from her old hospital position to try and compete for the spot to be on Dr. House's team. Oblivious she was - hadn't a clue who Dr. House was and what was the big deal about him. Quick-witted though, she understood this may be a position of a life time. Something to definitely turn her luck around and get her into real, serious medical business - nothing like serving food to the elderly. What was the point to study the fields she did only to change diapers?
The cream-colored house phone laid in her lap, her head nodding off to the side and ignoring the chatter at the table. It was then her Aunt spoke up above her thoughts and above all other voices.
"Now, Cassie. You need to know you got to leave that attitude of yours behind or else you won't go no where in life, child." Her aunt said, a thick west indian accent drizzled over every word."You know how them boys are like - they see a woman wantin' to take control and they go batty."
Each word went through one ear and came out the other, branding her 'advice' to be nothing by mindless dribble. Standing up, she dismissed herself from the table and threw down the dealt cards. It wasn't one of those advices she wanted to hear, her Aunt still treating her as if she was some ditzy Teenager in High School. How absurd.
"Nana, You know what. With all of that mess you speak-" Saved by the ring, Cassandra picked up.
Her voice sounded a bit irritated but she managed to sugar it up to sound professional, praying in the back of her mind that this was her opportunity for a better job - that the one to answer on the other line was to be Dr. House. She didn't care if it seemed desperate to wait for the call, it was the fact she was dedicated, determined and desperate. The three d's this reckless woman never resorted to until now.
"Hello, Cassandra Walker speaking."
