Her jaw agape, she stood staring at the door even after the male intern left to go complete the clinic hours he had been assigned to do. Looking at the other two standing there, she made a grimace and then walked away. Wasn't there some wort of paperwork for her to fill out? Didn't she need a hospital ID card so that people knew she actually worked there? And what about insurance benefits? No, she had simply been given and assignment and no further instructions. She didn't mind the fact that she had been given clinic hours, but there seemed to be no organization at all!
Kinga retraced her steps back to the secretary to try and find out what was going on at this hospital and how she was supposed to complete her job without having any idea what her job was.
"Excuse me again, I..."
Cutting her off before she could finish, the plump secretary said, "Wow, I believe you've set a new record."
"Wait, what?" she asked, not understanding what the secretary was referring to.
"Dr. House is harsh, but an intern has never quit THIS early in the game," exclaimed the secretary, rolling her eyes and she shifted some papers around.
"Excuse me, I'm not quitting. I'm simply asking for some information. You see, I went over and he assigned me to do...."
Interrupting her again the secretary said, "Listen hun, I have a lot of work to do. Perhaps you should go to Dr. Cuddy, she is House's superior and knows how to deal with him." Looking up at Kinga, she finished, "down that hall, go up the elevator to level 2, turn right and then your first left."
Kinga, confused and rather dazed, followed the secretary's instructions and made her way to the office. After getting lost, twice, she finally found the right door and knocked. Hearing the words "Come in" she opened the door and entered.
"Yes? How may I help you?"
Stretching out her arm Kinga replied, "Hello, my name is Dr. Kinga Mehra. I think I'm one of Dr. House's new interns."
Looking as if she completely understand what was going on, Dr. Cuddy's face relaxed and she smiled, trying to comfort the new, confused doctor who had no doubt just been annihilated by Dr. House's uncanny wit and humor.
"I'm sorry you've had a bad run in with him, but he's like that to everyone. If he called you in, then you are accepted, so don't worry about that. Apparently he's not giving anyone any interviews."
Kinga also relaxed when she heard this. It wasn't just her. "Thank you. But don't we need to sign some forms? Register with the staff?"
Cuddy realized that House hadn't done anything with these interns yet, except for give them assignments. He couldn't keep doing that, bypassing all of the paperwork and using people for his own needs. He may be an extraordinary doctor and diagnostician, but he still needed to play by some of the rules. She would have to have a talk with him later. But to Kinga she said,
"I'll take care of that today. If he gave you an assignment though, I suggest you go and do that before he forgets who you are. That is, if he hasn't already." Feeling bad after seeing Kinga's face she added, "He really is a great doctor though. Just stick with it."
Kinga said goodbye and thank you and then left the office. Making her way downstairs, she decided to follow the advice and made her way to the designated clinic area. Letting the nurse station know she was there and why, she was directed to an empty room and started taking in patients. The first one walked in, took off his pants, and lay down on the table face down. Lowering the band of his underwear, his bare bottom was completely showing even poised to stick up in the air.
"What seems to be the problem?"
"You're the doctor, you tell me whats wrong with it. All I know is it itches like crazy and I can't sit down anymore."
Dr. Kinga Mehra put on her gloves and started her first day at Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
