Well, I wasn't really expecting anyone to actually look at it. But glad people are.

Next, Submachine Guns.

A submachine gun is, in the basic of terms an automatic weapon that fires a pistol cartridge. In WWII they served as a great main-arm; Russians had entire regiments armed with subguns and the rate of fire they could produce was nothing short of tremendous.

Unfortunately, Submachine guns as a main military arm didn't last long. Spec-Ops and Covert forces still use SMG's. But most people use Carbines for close combat duty these days. But they are still used by Tank-Crews and Navy for defensive purposes.

They have a few flaws, namely they are pretty ineffective against modern body armor. However, certain ammunition types such as the Russian 9x21mm SP-10 are capable of penetrating armor very well. A special type of weapon class which I would consider an SMG is called a Personal Defense Weapon, I'm sure everybody has seen a P90 before. They promote armor penetration for lack of terminal ballistics.

When is the suitable time to use a SMG? Urban conditions; cramped conditions and any time where achieving multiple hits is more important. SMG's are used by police forces such as SWAT and probably any other law enforcement department.

Couldn't think of much on SMG's for now, I'll probably add more whne I do the mega edit.

If i could add a note to this, and please don't think i'm butting in Dustin, it's just a little extra note to bear in mind.

SMG's in the modern era are used more in the urban setting precisely for their lack of penetration.

I'll explain. The SAS will use SMG's in hostage situations because bullets wont accidentally OVER penetrate a body or wall. If you imagine using a rifle in a house, the 5.56 or 7.62 rounds could easily penetrate a wall of and enemy combatants body and those stray bullets could well end up killing civilians and the hostages and in most situations the forces attempting the rescue don't know where they are being held exactly. This is also a benefit with room clearing as friendly forces may well be in an adjacent room and vulnerable to unchecked fire penetrating walls.

Just an little thing i thought i would add as the negativity of the pistol cartridge being used can be turned to a great advantage in the right situation.

You should go over different types of ammunition. I would chime in, but too lasy to do the research.

Hm, nice to see another gun enthusiast, and yet another declaration of the ineffectiveness of the Desert Eagle as a competent weapon. I just thought I'd throw out a few facts.

Tsar recently stated that submachine guns are used in some urban situations because of their lack of wall penetration, and therefore lack of risk of severe collateral damage. This made me remember that many people use shotguns for home-defense for the same reason, as the dispersion of tiny pellets, although devestating to the target, do not individually have the power to penetrate the average outer (or even inner) walls of the average suburban home. Of course, the other reason it's used for home defense is its ability to lay down a lot of firepower in a little time, but that's just the purpose of a shotgun.

The other thing I noticed was when you remarked on the severe volume of firearms, but forgot to mention a very specific detail that is extremely important to the argument. Sound echoes in small, enclosed places. I've heard stories of police accidentally discharging their pistols in their squad cars, the ensuing sound deafening both officers within. This kind of fact is commonly ignored by writers employing the use of firearms, although it would have really sucked if Scarface went deaf after killing the bomber guy in his car.

I agree. I've never been a 'gun-addict', but I usually do my research (primarily for rpg situations). I remember once when I knew about most common weapons (still do) and their corresponding ammunition calibers (which I don't anymore). Things as size, ability, availability, etc would be nice. I'm thinking about going through this again, as I'm once again conducting modern-day firearms research (as opposed to Star Wars weapons - which is much easier, to say the least ) for a character I'm thinking about.

This thread is pretty awesome Dustin, good info and such. Perhaps you should add a little section about the basics of using firearms. I've seen in several threads where people pretty much have no idea what they're talking about when they're trying to describe their character shooting. For some reason the biggest thing that bothers me is when people say that they're tapping or jamming the trigger and then hit the target perfectly everytime. Squeeze people, squeeze!

Ooh, and I have a .50cal beowulf (AR style) that I use deer hunting. I love that gun and let me tell ya, it gets the job done.
