If i could add a note to this, and please don't think i'm butting in Dustin, it's just a little extra note to bear in mind.
SMG's in the modern era are used more in the urban setting precisely for their lack of penetration. I'll explain. The SAS will use SMG's in hostage situations because bullets wont accidentally OVER penetrate a body or wall. If you imagine using a rifle in a house, the 5.56 or 7.62 rounds could easily penetrate a wall of and enemy combatants body and those stray bullets could well end up killing civilians and the hostages and in most situations the forces attempting the rescue don't know where they are being held exactly. This is also a benefit with room clearing as friendly forces may well be in an adjacent room and vulnerable to unchecked fire penetrating walls. Just an little thing i thought i would add as the negativity of the pistol cartridge being used can be turned to a great advantage in the right situation. ~Tsardel~

Hm, nice to see another gun enthusiast, and yet another declaration of the ineffectiveness of the Desert Eagle as a competent weapon. I just thought I'd throw out a few facts.
Tsar recently stated that submachine guns are used in some urban situations because of their lack of wall penetration, and therefore lack of risk of severe collateral damage. This made me remember that many people use shotguns for home-defense for the same reason, as the dispersion of tiny pellets, although devestating to the target, do not individually have the power to penetrate the average outer (or even inner) walls of the average suburban home. Of course, the other reason it's used for home defense is its ability to lay down a lot of firepower in a little time, but that's just the purpose of a shotgun. The other thing I noticed was when you remarked on the severe volume of firearms, but forgot to mention a very specific detail that is extremely important to the argument. Sound echoes in small, enclosed places. I've heard stories of police accidentally discharging their pistols in their squad cars, the ensuing sound deafening both officers within. This kind of fact is commonly ignored by writers employing the use of firearms, although it would have really sucked if Scarface went deaf after killing the bomber guy in his car. |

This thread is pretty awesome Dustin, good info and such. Perhaps you should add a little section about the basics of using firearms. I've seen in several threads where people pretty much have no idea what they're talking about when they're trying to describe their character shooting. For some reason the biggest thing that bothers me is when people say that they're tapping or jamming the trigger and then hit the target perfectly everytime. Squeeze people, squeeze!
Ooh, and I have a .50cal beowulf (AR style) that I use deer hunting. I love that gun and let me tell ya, it gets the job done.
