Default Complex Magics

We all know that there are many kinds of magics, and that some would seem unbeatable, and should be banned, however I have thought of this guide to magic that might even the playing field.

There are several different magics. I'll list them below, along with their weaknesses.

Shadow -- You can manipulate shadows, and darkness, also can flux the shadow into 3D forms, such as weapons or armor. Weak in the day.

Light -- You can manipulate light, making it so you can create illusions, or make physical manifestations of the light, such as weapons and armor. Weak at night.

Fire -- You can manipulate fire, adding heat and light to what you do, you both weaken shadows, and melt ice, as well as burn other organisms. However, a strong wind, or ample water or earth can snuff you out.

Water -- You can manipulate water, moistenning things, doesn't sound like much, but drowning is an unpleasant way to die. You can also wear away at earth, and kill fires. Ice and electricity can easily take you down though.

Blood -- You can manipulate blood, this allows you to either kill one instantly, or bring them back to life, if they died recently. Also allows you to control another creature. Highly draining, can only control one creature's blood at a time, also left open for attacks by others.

Life -- You can manipulate life, taking the forms of both healing, and necromancy, and also instant death attacks. Instant death, and raising dead are both highly draining, can only be done very infrequently.

Plants -- You can manipulate plant life, easy way to contain another person, wrap tem in vines, Also good for finding food, shelter, and other things. You can also communicate with the plants, figure out info from what they have been around. However, all plants can burn quite easilly, from fire or strikes of lightning.

Ice -- You can manipulate ice, freezing things as you go. You are hard, and in the right areas, can be used for good shelter, you also make water take up less space, but you can't unfreeze it. Just be careful for fire.

Earth -- You can manipulate the very earth around you, building the best shelters, fortifications, and the most resistant of any materials. But even a simple wind can erode you, or a strong one. And a mighty rush of water can knock you down.

Electricity -- You can manipulate electricity, very much like fire, but faster and stronger. However it gives up the ability to best a few things, and when in close proximity of water, it can be self destructive.

Sound -- You can manipulate sound, allowing yourself to listen in on others, sneak around, or give orders to people miles away without anyone in between to hear. You can also create a sonic boom, but such an ability can also render your companions deaf if done incorrect.

Time -- You can manipulate time, but only the rate at which it flows. You can stop, slow and speedup time, but noever reverse it. As powerful as this magic sounds, it has no direct attack, and only works when being focused on, preventing use of any other abilities.

Gravity -- You can manipulate gravity, throwing things up in the air, hovering, or crushing things against the ground. However, the gravitation manipulation only effects a small area, and you have to be in complete focus to do anything.

Void -- The most varied of all the magics. Grants ability to alter reality, by shape shifting, weather changing, or by teleportation. However if it it known to be a false reality, anything within true reality can best it.

Air -- You can manipulate air, creating gusts of winds to blow away enemies, or keep yourslef alive in worse areas by drawing in clean air to yourself. If used hard enough can wear down even the mightiest of stone.

Mind -- You can control the minds of others, but only a handful at a time. This ability leaves you vulnerable to attacks, as your mind actually enters that of the controlled, leaving your body empty.


All the magics have their ups and downs, using them wisely is the key to victory and fun role playing.

Those sort of manipulations is one view on magics, but they are in no way the only magics. The playing field will never truly be equal when magic is discussed, as it is able to be seen or thought of in many different ways.

Some types of magic have no divisions. Others are divided by effect. Others are divided by element. And some a divided by what they manipulate. I believe it is really ultimately up to the thread creator to define the RP's magics in a manner which can be understood.

It very much is up to the roleplayer and especially the thread-starter. I'm going to change the Article system around a little bit to have the OFFICIAL documentation (i.e. a guide on how to use RPGuild or a guide on how to RP) and then an UNOFFICIAL, USER-SUBMITTED section that will be more opinionated and particular.

For instance, this is definitely not the only way to roleplay magic, by ANY means. However, I think these opinionated articles still have some value because they may be able to fuel someone's imagination -- maybe give someone a different perspective or insight on magic and perhaps could give them ideas to modify their own usage of magic. I definitely want to make it clear that this isn't endorsed by RPGuild as THE way to RP magic, though. I don't want a new RPer wandering in here and getting pigeon-holed because he thought this was some strict RPGuild document.

I agree, while this isn't the only way to do magic by any means, I think it is still a neat list. But people should remain flexible in their ideas of magic - for instance, a group of Rpers and I once accidentally made up a magic called soul-binding where you use souls for different spells. This isn't that innovative when you consider the multiple shonen stories that I'm sure have this as the plot, but it was nevertheless fun to Rp. Plus, when one character was killed off, we were able to keep him around as a character because one of my characters "collected" him! So the possibilities are endless.
