| Lycanthropy Set in a time that would fall between the medievil era and Victorian era, where the advent of steam power has led the the development of much by way of technology. Steam powered trains and dirigibles are primary modes of cross country transportation, and within big cities smaller railways are installed to make reaching different districts easier. We find ourselves in the city of Tamir, one of the largest in the country. It's a great walled fortress divided into distinct districts for the poor, middle class, wealthy, education and a factory district. A steam rail connects the districts via a central station located at the heart of the city. A militia of several thousand patrol the streets and guard the city gates. None are allowed into the city without first undergoing a rigorous health examination and passing several levels of quarantine. Why such precautions? Because Tamir is located in a land inflicted, inflicted with a rightfully terrifying disease known as Lycanthropy. The disease has been around for at least a few years now, spreading across the country side and carrying with it fear and uncertainty. Research is and has been done on the disease in an effort to understand it, and only a few cities have to this day remained free of contamination. As a result, places like Timir have adopted very strict entrance policies and quarantines to help keep the disease outside of the walls. They aren't so much interested in helping to cure the rest of the populace as they are in protecting themselves from whatever horror the disease carries. What is Lycanthropy? It is a disease that causes humans to mutate at certain times of day into strange creatures. Sometimes the creatures are wondrous and benign while others are repulsive and evil. Anyone infected with the disease is dubbed, lycan. Lycans transform into a being that is a reflection of their inner self - their soul becomes their skin. The triggers for transformation also vary from person to person - some transform on the full moon alike traditional lycans while others may transform when under a great deal of emotional stress or perhaps at high noon every Thursday. The trigger is also a reflection of the kind of lycan the person is, those who transform at night - for example - are likely to be evil and destructive. Regardless of what kind of lycan the person is there are no signs of infection before transformation, though afterward - if they ever return to human form there will always be signs of their disease that remain. They are also likely to transform again, though any transformation after the first can be resisted, it takes an individual of strong will and a great deal of mental focus to resist it. Who is Medical Scientist Albert Coyle? Albert Coyle was the first to research the disease, and to date the most successful. His documents and journals were said to be the most comprehensive examination of the condition. He breached every possible aspect of the infliction and was rumoured to be well on his way to discovering its source and consequently a cure. Unfortunately he himself became inflicted and during one of his transformations destroyed his work. When he awoke the next day he saw what he had done in his alternate state and hung himself out of shame and frustration (or so it is said). As it were, he was very vocal about his findings and had spread copies of his papers to intellectuals during his travels, so it is not uncommon for a tidbit of information to surface here or there, but hopes of reconstructing the entire knowledge base of Albert Coyle have long died with the first few who had endeavored to do just that. ~~Roleplay Rules/Guidelines~~ I don't want to flood you with rules, but there are some interesting aspects of this RP that need some explaining and clarifying. This is a dual roleplay, by that I mean there are two stories going on at once. One is following the characters who are all residents, or soon to be residents of Tamir. The second is the disease itself, told through the journals of Albert Coyle. Every few posts the poster can, if they like, begin their post with an excerpt from one of Albert's journals explaining some aspect or interesting story about the disease, or possibly a personal reflection about something. You don't have to itegrate the exerpt into your characters IC post, think of it instead as expandig the universe and adding your own flavour to the disease. For now I won't put a restriction on how often excerpts may be posted, so long as the person before you had not posted one then feel free to do so. My first post has an excerpt, consider it an example of what I mean. Other than that, I'm going to leave the basic world outline and description of Lycanthropy skeletal. The second post of the OOC will be a time line of important events, and important NPC list, active player list, and a set of links to posts that contain excerpts. Also, I will not enforce a posting order, *unless* a couple of you get carried away with your interaction. Make sure at least 2 people have posted since your last post and everything should work itself out nicely! ~~Character Sheets~~ Name: Gender: Brief History: As some of you may know, I like to keep character sheets minimal. The name and gender are for identification and the history is to make sure you can write up to Advanced standards. Appearance and personality development are reserved for the IC posts. ~~Final Comments~~ This RP will last so long as there is at least one person posting with me. If you are going to drop out, or go inactive for any interval longer than a week please PM me. So let's get this show on the road, I'll prop up the IC later today. On that note, we are starting in Tamir while it's still un-afflicted (well, ok, unafflicted until the end of my first post :P) Also, my character sheet: I will be promiscuously running around with NPCs for a bit I imagine (of course NPC"s are controllable by anyone as long as you keep their personalty in check), however I will have proper character as follows: Name: Raylen Kordyke Gender: Male History: Raylen was born a noble in the Capital City Hyvale, and upon reaching adult hood rejected the life his parents had laid out for him. Instead of taking his place in the courts as chief prosecutor like his father Raylen moved away from his home in the Hyvale and traveled the world in search of a profession and life he could be happy with. His journey's led him to Tamir, three years before the onset of Lycanthropy. He met up with a local alchemist by the name of Gregory Letraine. The two hit it off immediately and Raylen discovered his niche. He had an aptitude for the alchemical arts, picking up the complex ideas with unnatural efficiency. At the time of their meeting Gregory had just completed an apprenticeship under a one Albert Coyle, the famous medical practitioner who was always on the cutting edge of science. Gregory had only been in Tamir for a couple of days when he met Raylen, and so the two opened up an alchemy school together. They got themselves a nice place in the Educational District, spent a year getting all of the approvals required to open a new school - all the while working at odd jobs in the city to support themselves and their future business venture. They opened their school of alchemy in Annum 413, the year before Lycanthropy was known continent wide. At this time the disease had surfaced, but only in small rural communities. Their school was an instant success, and they opened a student run alchemical shop in the tourist district of Tamir six months after the school opened. Business was booming, they sold everything from cures of the common cold to what was rumoured to be the most delicious and refreshing phial of liquid ever. The day when Tamir went into lock down was the same week when Gregory came down with a serious illness. He died two days later, leaving the running of the store and school in Raylen's hands. The subsequent lock down of the city reduce tourist traffic and the store started to struggle. Parents withdrew the students from the school, preferring to teach them from home where they felt it was safer and Raylen, unable to balance both failing businesses, closed the school. Now he runs the shop by himself, occasionally he tutors old students privately in the alchemical arts. |
