Not really, except they all use the same principal of going into hyperspace. The rules in hyperspace are different than normal space, so ships can do things there (faster than light) that would be considered 'cheating' in normal space.

All sufficiently-advanced races can also create artificial wormholes. You need a Gate at each end, but they are huge and allow near-instant travel.
