| Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2009 | Solaris Extremis: OOC/Recruitment Timeline 2012: First successful manned Mars landing. The infrastructure for a colony is laid down and over the next two years various unmanned shuttles are sent with seeds, ice, and other terraforming tools. 2020: Both the moon and Mars have a permanent population of 1000. 2021: All of earth’s countries amalgamate, becoming the United Earth Front. Rebels of Luna and Mars want independence, and a five year-war is fought across space. Man makes great advances in spatial warfare this way. 2026: The gas giants have permanent satellite-colonies, and a mission is en route for the outer planets. 2030: Solving the problem of interspatial communication, Professor J. Karl creates an artificial brain from stem cells capable of projecting information across massive lengths in seconds. Over the next twenty years, colonies are placed in the entire solar system except Pluto. 2050-2057: The second war of independence is fought-the Karlsons, a German military family, display themselves with great valour and become well-known as a force in war. 2060: A satellite is sent to Pluto. It will self-control, build a city, terraform the planet with great rapidity, and then awaken the cryogenically revive the humans of board. 2080: Earth is evacuated, to let the broken planet recover from 5000 years of human organization. A station is planned on the very cusp of Solaris’ gravity, in the event of an invasion from beyond the system. The station is designated Solaris Extremis. 2086: A massive cryogenics ship is found approaching the system. Upon discovery, it is established that the inhabitants are from hundreds of different sentient species. Languages are learnt, but the aliens mostly keep to themselves, sometimes coming onto the partially-complete Solaris Extremis. 2099: At the turn of the century, Solaris Extremis is almost complete. Today, 2103: The youngest commander in the United Solaris Defence Force, the USD-Force, Artemis Karlson, is placed in command of Solaris Extremis after losing a leg to a pirate attack. Disgruntled humans, having been uprooted from Earth 20 years ago, are attacking the colonies, but they are too well defended. The attacks apparently subside to little more than the occasional raid of Solaris Extremis. Trouble, however, has a tendency to follow mankind everywhere. Information recieved by Neuron 232341... Displaying... -SOLARIS EXTREMIS CLASSIFIED FILES- -PASSWORD: ********* - -ACCEPTED- ![]() Solaris Extremis Solaris Extremis is beyond a shadow of a doubt the single greatest construction man has ever made. It weighs, on a standard 1G rating, over 400,000,000 tons. In space, it glides with ease through its assigned patrolling area. Having a standing crew of over 10,000 and 2000 visitors going in and out every day, S.E. is the most visited building in space. Commanded by the young Artemis Karlson, the leader of the famed Omega Wing, it stands as a bastion between the threats that may lie ahead, protecting the Solar System from any danger from outside. The construction took over twenty years, and in the year 2103, it was finally finished, crewed, and ready to protect the USD. The United Solaris Defence forces’ lend their armies to the defence of S.E. as will be explained later. See below an all-encompassing introduction to the station; for any further information contact the GM-79374 informationnet matrix. Solaris Extremis has a saucer structure-a massive disk around a gargantuan spire. At the top of the spire is the bridge, which is above an elevator leading to the central disk. This in turn is divided into five sectors, with the center of the sector being devoted to quarters. On the bottom is docking, with loading space from below the disk sufficient for at least five ships at once to move in or out, and up to 200 ships can be docked at any time. A quarter of the docking space is given over to military ships, most of which are the famed Karlson SF-39 fighters, produced by the famed Karlson Military contracting services, which arm most of the USD. Above this is the hydroponics deck, which keeps millions of tons of vegetable matter, kept alive by the carbon emisions from the dock below, and the ministrations of the Hydroponics teams, who have selectively bred plants to be able to survive in low G, although the station rotates fast enough to maintain 1G or just below. Above the Hydroponics sector is Engineering-the largest sector, this covers everything from workshops repairing and producing tiny electronic devices to assembling emergency teams to go through the vents, repairing massive peices of machinery throughout the station-without this vital service, S.E. would not exist, and it was built first to provide a permanent base for building the rest of the station. ![]() Similarly vital above this is the medical deck; an entire hospital, devoted to anyone who requires medical care in an emergency-the commander of the station, Wing Commander Artemis Karlson, had her prosthesis attached here after a docking went wrong and her right leg was shredded, quite literally, to peices. With a fully-equipped medical staff of over 5000, some of the USD territories' richer citizens have paid for private treatment at the state-of-the-art installation-unfortunately, the inherent danger with being onboard Solaris Extremis means that often they end up in the emergency ward. Finally, above this, is the the armory, wherein Security staff and General crewmen shuttle, look after, record, and examine every weapon, bullet, and peice of cargo moving in, out, and around S.E. This is the most dangerous job, because some people don't want the USD poking their noses into their affairs. As a footnote, this deck is also in charge of the 700 turrets controlled by the central neuropter that destroy any threat, supporting the various fighter wings that patrol the USD's space around S.E. Instead of radio, which would require messages to take a decade to reach Mars, the command centre of the USD, the computing and messaging node of S.E. is the neuropter; a combination of awesomly complex circuitry and evolved brain cells, which send messages at the speed of thought, to the thousands of other neuropters in the Solaris system, transferring messages faster then they can be constructed by hand, so the neuropter has a direct link to the Commander of the station, in this case Artemis Karlson. This link allows her to directly 'think' messages and recieve them as thoughts. It has been noted that, due to the circuitry being produced by aliens, it somewhat disrupts the circadian rhythms, interfering with sleep. However, this often dissapears after a few weeks. On this note, Solaris Extremis' lighting is constant with that of Earth; a twenty-four hour rotation means that the lighting simulates the cycle of day and night. In critical areas of the ship, however, the 'night' lighting is completely absent, replaced by 'evening', providing a long-shadowed orange lighting system at the appropriate times so as not to disrupt important work. This system has proven itself as aiding the sleep of the crew, and those who prefer night shifts can change the lighting in their quarters to mirror the system, i.e. midday during the midnigh shift break-it keeps everyone calm, aware of the time, and reminds them of the green and blue marble called Earth that man has left to sleep. United Solaris Defence Force The United Solaris Defence Force, or USD as it is more popularly known, is charged with the protection of everything within a million spatial leagues (equal to the circumference of the earth) of Solaris. To perform this duty, it recruits from the patriotic ranks of every planet in the Solaris system. There are rumours that Proximans would be accepted into a role within the USD if they applied, but this is unlikely; the aliens are highly wary of the humans, and take great steps to attempt to stay inconspicous. The ranking system is similar to that of the navy for pilots, but each department has seperate ranks, displayed on the nametag of the crewman (see below): Engineering: Recruit - Ensign - Sergeant - Shift Sergeant - Sector Sergeant - Technical Officer Second Class - Technical Officer First Class - Technical Commander - Technical Commander-in-Chief Hyroponics: Recruit - Ensign - Sergeant - Botanical Sergeant- Sector Sergant - Botanical Officer Second Class - Botanical Officer First Class - Hydroponical Commander - Hydroponical Commander-in-Chief Security: Recruit - Ensign - Sergeant - Leiutenant - Major - Captain - Sector Captain - Commander - Security Commander-in-Chief Pilot: Recruit - Ensign - Wingman - Elite Wingman - Wing Sergeant - Wing Leader - Wing Commander - Tactical Commander - Strategic Commander - Aeronautical Commander-in-Chief Mining does not really have a ranking structure as such, but more a commercial-style employment rank system; the mangagers of a shift assign roles to crewmen who show aptitude. The medical ranks, similarly, are based around traditional hospital titles, but most of the medical crew prefer to be simply referred to as 'Doctor'. ![]() Culture With such a cosmopolitan construction, it is inevitable that there is going to be a great collection of cultures involved. Ethnically, the most common group is European or Caucasian. Despite the time passed between now and 2103, very little has actually changed in the realms of ethnicity or names, but it is perhaps worth noting that most people are roughly six foot. Music has changed, with Techno moving to the front of the charts, meaning that everybody is listening to heavy, cyberpunk-esque beats. Clothing has moved very much into the ‘pinstriped ninja’ area-a combination of punk and suits has created a unique style all over the Solaris system. Fashion spreads pretty rapidly across all of the planets in the Solar System, and there are only a few brief points worth mentioning; -Martians are generally gruff, hardy people, and make excellent Security staff. -Gas Giant Orbital Stations usually produce people ready for cramped conditions, and very little contact, and as such usually prefer the lonelier engineering posts. -The further away from Earth a planet is, the more likely it is to give birth to hard people. ![]() One very important detail is that nobody lives on Earth anymore. Having been abandoned, a device called the Genome Distributor, used to colonize the other planets, is making Earth the serene garden world it was, before human civilization. Having learnt their lesson, humans have taken great steps to making sure that the planets they still have are looked after. Each one is exactly how God intended it to be, while still being good enough for humans to survive on. Some groups are disgruntled, and this has lead to recent instability, as terrorist groups bent on returning to the recovering planet attack the colonies. There have been threats from a group called ‘The Swans’ who are hell-bent on destroying the USD and returning to Earth, but they have mostly been ignored in favour of looking at real problems as opposed to intimidation. Religion is a big thing in the year 2103, with most humans marvelling at what humanity has achieved. Most are sciotheistic-this means they believe in their given religion, but with the proven scientific facts threaded in, i.e. the Big Bang, or Evolution, since most rational people believe that an all-mighty powerful being could easily set such things into motion. Uniform On Solaris Extremis, there is a standard uniform for all crewmen-a grey-blue jumpsuit (manufactured from Kevlar, with a nametag stitched onto the left breast) with a thick, darker stripe along the side. It is self sealing, releasing a plastic cement upon being worn, giving a taut fit. This glue then repairs any damage to the jumpsuit, and allows for easy removal and lets the wearer put the garment on with similar ease. Footwear is generally heavy magnetic boots, but this is up to the actual wearer to decide. For the various departments, there is a special designator marker: -Fighter pilots have a thinner stripe inside the dark blue one, white for the famed Omega Wing, and then all the colors of the rainbow corresponding to the wing that the pilot belongs to. -Engineers have reinforced shoulder pads, and a hefty belt filled with all manner of tools. -USD security have their jumpsuit covered in armour, and always wear a helmet. This helmet is rounded, with a tinted visor designed to be intimidating. Armed with a low-speed, high calibre rifle, the security are always found wearing boots that secretly add four inches to the height of the wearer. -Medical crew have a white stripe as opposed to a dark blue one on the sides of their jumpsuit. Also, they have an Engineering-style belt filled with appropriate medical equipment, including three sedative jabs. -Hydroponics crewmen have a green collar stripe, representing the plants they tend on the Hydroponics deck. -General crewmen, who are assigned jobs as and when the various departments need extra labour, have no special designation. -Mining teams, charged with seperating the various useful minerals from the asteroids brought in to be (as the name implies) mined, each have a star on their collar in a colour denoting their mining team. The uniform is generally a guarantee of respect by any member of the USD planets, since it is unique to Solaris Extremis, which is most frequently attacked of any USD installation. It is a criminal offence to deface a USD uniform, defined as a deliberate damage to a USD uniform not reparable by the self-repair mechanism when there is no threat to life. Proximans ![]() The alien species first encountered in A.D. 2086, Proximans are gifted with a fantastic ability to send their bodies straight into hibernation, with only five 'heartbeats' a minute. It is difficult to explain alien biology in human terms, but one doctor Sean Roy, a renowned genetic engineer, managed to summarize their lives: "...on first appearance, the Proximans appear like some sort of animal from Earth's primordial history. They look like a semi-erect gaited massive mammal, perhaps like a giant sloth of some manner. However, they bear no resemblance to the now-extinct Giant Sloth beyond the most basic visual examination. Standing at seven foot when standing completely straight (which is very rare indeed), they are covered in in a feather-fur type growth that attracts dirt and other detritus with ionized atoms, removing the energy from them through convection, elimenating any need for digestive organs, which is why there is no clear oral orifice on the Proximan form. The cell structure is similar, but there appears to be no cell membrane or nucleus in the Proximan cell. Cytoplasm flows freely, carrying the energy gained from ionization to different parts of the body, and chemical barriers, seemingly completely inanimate, keep the cells in some sort of order. Genetic material comes in the form of a benign, symbiotic virus, which releases what human immune cells would consider antigens, instructing the free-flowing cells on how to function. The only similar cells are those of the brain; an oddity in the Proximan physiology, neurones (who do not need axons, due to the Proximan Cell Movement patterns) flow within their own seperate chemical barrier, processing information from compound eyes, sensitive ears, and a 'smell' which has organs all over the fur-feather skin, detecting odours from the surrounding area with the entire body. This 'brain' controls the entire body, givng order to the energy pulses released throughout the body, without which the electrical currents simply destroy the body by causng it to burst into flame. Due to a surprising coincidence, Proximans breathe oxygen, although it is unknown what purpose the oxygen has. Communicating by electrical messages, the neuropter can decode these messages and send them to anyone near the source properly connected to the neuropter, such as the crew of Solaris Extremis, which is nearing completion. Thus, we can understand the Proximan's language and they ours. My team and I will continue to work on the problem of Proximan physiology until you or a higher USD authority instruct us otherwise." Dr. Sean Roy, Ph.D, to Commander Erik Karlson. Equipment Instead of a lengthy, and mostly impractical list of every peice of equipment used on Solaris Extremis, a summary of the equipments used aboard Solaris Extremis is below. All crew members have a communicator. Engineering: Engineering tools, {all standard tools, welding torch, circuitry manipulators, spare circuitboards and spare peices of modular machinery for effecting temporary repairs-a permanent repair would require a visit to a storage unit.} interface PDA designed to interface with any peice of machinery made by the USD. Medical: Medical tools {syringe, scalpel, drug synthesizer-five doses, surgical tools, amputation wire, oxygen, blood bag compatible with all blood types}, handheld CAT scanner, sterilizing fluid. Pilot: Stimulants, Basic engineering tools {similar to that of the Engineer, but only to perform basic repairs to ships}, G-force resistance helmet. Security: 200 rounds, 1cm, low-speed rifle, scope, kevlar, smoke grenades, knife. Mining: Laser cutter, 200 minutes battery, recharge equipment. General Crewmen have tools based upon the task they are currently assigned, and basic training in all areas of S.E. work. Character Form Name: Age: Gender: Rank/Title: Species: Sector: Medical, Security, Medical, Hydroponics, Pilots, Mining, Engineering, and General. Height: In metric, please. Weight: In metric, please. Appearance: Not just eyes and hair, but a full description; imposing? Mousy? Small, tall, fat, thin, muscular, lean? Personality: Again, a full description. History: Ditto. Equipment: Equipment issued to the character in the line of his/her duty. Personal Artefacts: More personal things, i.e. a teddy bear. Although WHY a military astronaut would carry a teddy bear, I do NOT know... IMPORTANT: There will be a maximum of two aliens. Furthermore, I do NOT want to have to put limits on the number of Security staff, nor do I want a million heavily-armed nutjobs toting their guns...(like they'll be any use...mehehehehehe...) I've tried this one before, and it never really took off. So, I'll give it a further go. |

| Screaming Lobsters™ Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: A Funhouse | Just... wow. I know I may have said I might join, but after reading all that, I definitely want to be a part of it! Most of the words you used made me feel like I was back in the playground, but that just adds to the epicity you've created. I shall create a CS shortly! Question: Could my character be a part of the medical staff? Reading through all the ranks, I found they sort of... Went out of my field of knowledge. Working with the gunman/engineer type always makes me feel like I'm not researching the role enough. As with the pilot rank, I'd feel like I don't know enough about it to properly write the role. If not, I can try one of the other positions. It's always fun to try something new! |

| Screaming Lobsters™ Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: A Funhouse | Excellent! Thank-you! I'm going to make sure my CS stands out. In terms of the medical staff, what are the ranks? Would they be similar to the ones commonly found on the now-vacant Earth (ie. Nurse, Doctor, Neurosurgeon, etc.)? Or are they slightly altered? |
