Light: According to many, there has been an increasing number of people who spam roleplays or just plain roleplay badly. The reason for this is that newcomers generally don't know how to get help for their roleplaying. They simply join one roleplay and make a mess of it, annoying everyone.
Darkness: She's beating about the bush. The point we're trying to make is that new members should have to undergo some kind of "test" to ensure that they're ready to step into the realm of roleplaying. Get a "guarantee of quality", perhaps. The idea is that a special roleplaying forum is set aside for only newcomers, for them to practise their skills first, and they're not allowed to post in the proper roleplaying forums till their roleplaying is checked by certain people-they could be mods or another group of unique people-who will either Approve them and make them full-fledged members, or Decline them. In this way, roleplaying quality is guaranteed, roleplayers have a clear idea of their quality and non-committed members are "filtered out", in a way. How's that? |

I agree with Gat, its a bad idea.

Me too. I didn't join this forum to take a test, and I think I've done pretty well for myself, roleplaying-wise. I don't think that's fair to newcomers at all. Putting up a giant wall to protect the "quality" roleplayers wont help at all. It'll just offend whomever's new to the site and ruin their perceptions of all the people already here.

I agree, it would be a good idea but it would also be unfair to the newcomers. Plus we already have a "practice" section the beginner section so I guess it's a no from me...Sorry

I have to say it's a no for me as well. It's completely unfair to new comers and as stated as before the beginers section is there for new comers to learn how to rp. As with anyone that's learning for the first time we must be patient with them and help them along the way. Otherwise we're ruining our open to all atmosphere.

Yet again another one against this idea.
I choose to situate myself here over other RP sites for that very reason - I am an experienced role player and writer and was being forced to make minimum post counts and such just to be admitted to the level of roleplay I desired. Not only does such a system take away from the open to everyone atmosphere but it may potentially scare off experienced Rpers who just don't feel the need to devote the time to be 'approved'. I think the best solution is simply an open, friendly and helpful atmosphere. If a newcomer with inadequate skills joins in on your roleplay simply contact them and point them in the right direction for skill improvements. We have all at one point been there. No one was an awesome roleplayer to begin with and everyone can always improve. All in all I think the system as it stands is working fine. |

Thats actually a pretty good idea, but for smaller boards. This one is just so big and has so many members that it might get complicated, and then the mod team would have to go over each entry and decide who has good writing and who doesn't. And being a newb on a writing forum is already intimidating enough for some, anyway.
However, if you really wanted to go through with the idea, that might work if you have submit a piece for writing in the Advanced Section, keep that one nice and free of unready posters, but really its a pretty great system we have already. We have Beginner ---- Casual ---- and Advanced, so there are steps. I also agree with Candi. This forum is a breath of fresh air since I've been on so many forums that require a minimum character count and have to approve just about anything you type out. The nice atmosphere, free of insane rules and such will appeal more to other people and we'll get a lot of new roleplayers that have a lot to bring to the table. If the newbs are needing some help writing, maybe we should make a new members area and have a bunch of help topics posted there. The Articles Forum is sort of hidden in the OOC forum, so maybe that could be moved to introductions or something. I do tons of writing workshops on other forums and would love to help out some new aspiring writers, so if need be I could help provide some material. Just my two cents and a dust bunny. |
