I would like to hear nominations for people you guys think would make good mentors. Or, you can simply volunteer.
I have heard several people mention a system like this. So I am going to step out and try it. Anyone who wants to help me design the system can pm/im/email me with suggestions, as I am shooting blindly here. I, 76, am volunteering my own services to anyone who wants my help. As for a nomination. I would like to nominate Commandersnow, Nowhereman or Donta. They all have considerable role-playing abilities. And I think that if they were willing they could really help out. I am not imposing on anyone. I just want my thoughts known here. The following members are going to be 'mentors' for anyone who needs them. Feel free to bug them any time of the day about anything. They are here to help you out because ya want it. Not because you need it.

The deal with that^^ is, people don't want to seem like a noob, and therefore will not post a request about things they think are 'common knowledge'
But if they have a private mentor, they can privately request help with whatever problem and then not have to worry about the masses laughing at them. The reason I'm doing this thread is to help the more unexperienced members know who they can 'bug' about whatever topic. I, myself have more time than any person my age should, so I offer anyone the right to contact me by whatever means.

*puppy eyes* I gots nominated? *cough* This was so unexpected... *pulls out a little sheet of paper* I'd like to thank my parents, and God, and of course Satan... (reference anyone?)
Yes, anyhow, I think Candi's on the right track here. Only problem with something like that is the horrid idea of bad advice, where someone that doesn't really know too much about the topic at hand tries to add their two cents worth anyway and throws off the poor people. Not really a whole lot you can do about that though... |

That stuff kind of rules itself out Nowhere Man, because good information always looks better than bad and will be more plentiful and better supported by the community at large. So if bad advice finds it's way into a request for help it will get buried in good advice and possibly even commented on and corrected.
A big thing about this is those who are replying need to be neutral, fair and unbiased in their replies. No personal attacks just solid information. ~ As for the noob fear if you could post anonymously that would be alright but I see your point. But I fear creating a list of 'mentors' will again segregate the community into categories of "good" and "not good". I know that's not the point but I see that happening. And I see someone coming in and attacking everyone on the list for being RP snobs trying to convert the world and who have a hidden agenda of doom - more rifts in the guild etc. etc. ~ So in light of all of that, a good approach is for the new people to simply know where to go for help. Where the articles are that give advice and by poking around who knows their stuff. If we just maintain the happy, friendly atmosphere I think people who want/need help will seek it in the right places Personally I haven't seen any real problems of anyone who desperately needed help and I don't really know why this 'mentor' system is in such high demand, honestly I don't think we need it. |

The idea is awesome and I'm for it, but there is one problem with it.
Even the newbies are like, they want to solve problems by themselves, its not a problem to be self-reliant, but they're not asking for help. We mods don't have much thing to do, so i suppose we wouldn't mind to help giving ideas or helping with grammar. It's worth a try, but i see no success in it. |

The above is probably correct.

It was still worth a shot. And having a list of people who have time to help is not a bad idea in my opinion. Worrying about if your bothering someone is a common concern among newbs. (I say this from experience as well as knowing allotta newbs.)

I know what you mean (concern about bothering someone) so I guess in that sense the list may help.
Perhaps edit your first post to contain something like this: Willing Mentors
---- That way we at least have the list of people who are willing to devote some time to anyone willing to ask for it. As for Lynxx's thoughts I feel that the most assist able thing is spelling and grammar. Most of the errors I see in that area could be fixed by using your browsers built in spell check (or adding a spell check extension if for some reason you don't have one - copy-pasta'ing into a word processor and running that check - basically a spell checker). Roleplaying itself is something that one learns through practice and reading. Some are born with shard tongues while others spend a long time tuning them up to be good. |
