I posted this delightful rant in another thread a little while ago, but due to the lack of reactions from a mod, I felt it was worth re-posting. The thread had already been replied to by several mods by the time I said any of this, so I don't blame anyone for it being over-looked.
The general topic is about opening an IRC Chatroom: I am sorry to resurrect this topic but I just want to make a suggestion about a form of live interaction between the members of RPG. I understand Mahzkreig (sp?) is particularly preoccupied (so I've read in threads dating back a few weeks at least) and I don't blame him at all; I can certainly relate. We have all been attacked by the Demons of DothisnownotanythingyouwanttobutthethingswewantNOW NOWDOITNOW, and I offer my support. This suggestion has been rattling around in my head since not long after I joined and I have just been going crazy waiting to see someone else say something about it, so that they (and not I) can get yelled at and I can get away Scott-free (no offense to Scott, if you're a Scott). Unfortunately I only have so much patience until this little voice in my head says DO IT DO IT, so it looks like I have to step out of the shadows for a brief moment and take the risk. I mentioned two posts ago that the Moderators could open up an IRC chatroom (that's Internet Relay Chat, a vast network of people who REALLY don't get out a lot) on an EFnet server or DALNet or Slashnet or FreeWMDSnet or whatever. It's fairly simple to manage and it takes no set up or coding, just a little room registration if you want but any Mod could take care of that. Not only does this create a general chatroom for the various members of the RPG forum BUT it opens up the possibility of branch-chatrooms. You see I can't help but fear that one single chatroom would easily become over-crowded and become the plaything of the talkative, leaving us lurkers and shyguys to watch the text scroll up faster than a treadmill can launch a small pet into a wall on a hilarious episode of AFV. Instead, being able to branch out into separate chatrooms (perhaps for one particular RP thread, or for personal live RP, or just to chat about Advanced or Casual RP ideas, or to just talk about the economy or politics because lord KNOWS we're tired of that topic and it needs its own corner of the universe to just fester by itself where no one has to pay attention). We wouldn't HAVE to branch out, but just having the option would be able to allow the Mods/Ops to ask that the people that have been discussing X for TWELVE HOURS and getting leery stares from the people who want to talk about Y can make their own chatroom instead of kicking them out with their big e-boots or something equally tiresome. Makes life easier for everyone. Anyway that's my two cents. For the size of the post it may be worth almost three cents, but whatever, I'll have my accountant look at it and send a bill. If it's a horrible idea feel free to decline, I'll be happy just having suggested it, but if you like it I will be happy to take any and all credit. I take my thanks in the form of cash or 90s music mix tapes, take your pick. If you're interested in more information please choose from my impressive list of IM names, send me a PM or just post here to tell me what a god awful person I am and how I should have never come here to write such ridiculous rot.

The one thing I can think of is Yahoo Messenger, and just start up a giant conference, and let people talk there, and then they can have their own, etc etc. It sounds like it'd work out well, but then not everyone has Yahoo.

The most common way to connect to IRC is through the mIRC client.
mIRC: Internet Relay Chat client Here's a quick guide on how to connect using mIRC. 1. Download the mIRC client. The download is free and safe from any spyware. (The client may tell you that you have 29 days left to use the it, but even after the 30 day limit, the program will not prevent you from opening it. You'll just get occasional reminders.) 2. Open mIRC options (or click the button with a hammer and a folder on it). 3. On the "Connect" tab, add the irc.gamesurge.net server to the server list by clicking the Add button. (Put "irc.gamesurge.net" into the IRC Server text bar. The default port is 6667, it's fine the way it is. Put whatever you want in the description.) 4. Type your desired nickname into the Nickname bar. Sometimes your desired name is taken, so put an alternative in the bar below (recommended something that no one else would choose). 5. Select the irc.gamesurge.net server in the server list, then hit "Connect to IRC server." If you hit "OK" your settings will be saved, but you will not connect. (You can connect and disconnect using the lightning bolt button.) 6. In the server window that appears, type "/join #RolePlayerGuild" without the quotes. Quick Legend Various symbols appear next to the nicknames of people in the channel. Here's a quick overview of what they mean. @Nickname (mode +o) - A general Operator of the chatroom. This person can kick, ban, set topics, voice, and op other chatters. +Nickname (mode +v) - Voiced. Usually this does nothing, but it's a common courtesy usually to voice all channel goers. If the channel is set to moderated mode (mode +m) then only Voiced individuals can still chat.
