Default Noob Help

Okay, so I'm still lurking the games and have a question or two (or three).

I'm not new to tabletop RPGing but things seem to be a little different here.

Whenever a new game pops up and people are asked to join in what rules apply? What are the rules for any particular campaign? (stats, rolls...) I've noticed that some campaigns post character info rules in the OOC Chat but do hard stats (values) play a part or do the members just say what their characters do and it automatically succeeds?

From the RP Guild Guide:
Quote:
This is very synonymous with D&D and other pen and paper RPGs, except that there's room for even greater creativity and development, and the “dice rolling” is left strictly up to your own reasoning.
That's why I'm asking. I haven't found any other mention of Dice Rolling.

Someone please help this poor confused soul (or link to a thread I've missed that explains it better).

Thanks all

Hmmm I cannot help you there... As of all my role playing carrier I have yet to use Dice Rolling, nor have I seen it in action on this site.

But this has been move to Suggestions/Problems. Because it fits there better really. Hope someone else is better able to help you with your question.

I think this answers my question:

http://roleplayerguild.com/f22/combat-rules-3476/
Quote:
Forcing Hits

Forcing a hit is the act of writing out an attack and the impact. This is the cornerstone of the forums fighting system. A player may not force hits on anther player’s character under ANY circumstance. If Player A launches an attack, it is completely up to Player B if they take the hit. Essentially, the entire goal of forums fighting is to corner an opponent via writing into taking a hit that they can’t logically or realistically avoid. Yet again, the words “realistic” and “logic” come into play.

Do not take excessive measures to escape a hit or bail on the thread. There is a winner and a loser in every fight, and it is not necessary to pitch a fit if you lost fairly. It is better to lose gracefully than to cheat your way to victory, and there will be repercussions for people who can‘t handle losing every once in a while.

Bailing on a thread for more than a week without notifying the other participants will result in the last attack launched at you landing, even if it is a killing blow. In such cases a mod will need to be notified in order to inforce this rule.
Does this apply to all RP Sections (beginner, Casual, Advanced, and Persistent)?

Alright this is why I had always had a problem with forum roleplaying being called "roleplaying". Yes, it is roleplaying in the sense that you play a specific role; however, it is far different than roleplaying games because it isn't really a game. Many people, myself included, refer to the roleplays as games, but in reality the roleplays are really interactive "novels". What I mean is that you aren't playing a game where a GM and dice rolls determine success, but rather you are writing a novel with other people. When you describe your actions it isnt a matter of just saying: I jump to the next ledge (then the GM rolls and says you fail), but rather you say something like:

Lance Corporal Maxine Hall had never been in the field before, but she had run technical liasion for her old squad. She knew about the inhuman beasts that dwelled in space and when she accepted this mission she knew she might stare down the blood filled maw of some horror that just ripped her squad mate's head off. She knew this and yet her heart still pounded as she ran down the poorly lit corridors of the space derelict. Her heart skipped another beat when she ran through a damaged the door, the beast snarling behind her, only to find that the bridge across the reactor chasm was obliterated in the disaster. With no other choice the young woman leaped across. With a gasp of breath she barely managed to catch the other ledge, but she couldn't pull herself up and the beast on the other side of the bridge seemed to laugh in its snarls as it devised a way to get the helpless girl.

The above example is how online roleplaying can be deeper than playing D&D or the like; however, the trick to making an enjoyable game is to not become attached to your characters. Things can always succeed if you want them to, but what kind of story would that be. In the above example I didn't make my character fail, but she didn't succeed either. She is in a lot of trouble and I am relying on the next players post to determine what will happen to her. Hopefully my ally Shakes will kill the beast with his flamethrower and help me up, but I don't know. Basically when playing on this forum you are wrting a book from the standpoint of your main character. You can include NPC and other minor characters, but the story focuses on your character. At the same time all of the other players are writing books based on their characters, but it is in the same story. Essentially you all write a book together and when the reader reads it they see the same story from multiple perspectives. Just remember, you can control your character and any NPC, but not the characters of others. A good players knows how to write a good story and they will not always succeed. Most of my characters die or receive permanent damage by the end of a story. Read some Advanced Games to see how this all works, because the beginner games won't really give you an idea. In short, there are NO stats, rolls, skill ratings, etc. Combat is lucid and fluid and works based on your story telling skill. I hope my long ramble helped.

EDIT: Yes that applies to all forums.

lol You pretty much said everything that needed to be said.
Although the topic creator did remind me of an old forum where RPers refuse to take a single hit or lose a fight.

Thanks Azzorak. That's a VERY good ramble and really helped me get a grasp of the forum.

Reminds me of playing G'I'Joes in the backyard when I was little with my best friend:

Me: I hit you, you're dead!

Him: No you didn't. I used used *insert crazy gadget here* and dodged.

Me: No you didn't!

*Crazy fight ensues, then we quickly move on to Hotwheels instead*

One more thing. I created a character for the persistent world. He has an NPC as character support:

Was it ok to include the NPC in the same post since the characters sort of go hand-in-hand or should Deathwish get his own thread?

The NPC "friend" of your character is kind of like a piece of "equipment" if you will. So it is best to do it as you did.
