Got to agree with him, this does help out on the majority of forum sites, not just RP ones. Explicit language or other adult things can be reported almost instantly depending on the crowd. Which means it can't be hidden away as people post over it.
Way to go Tai for knowing what to put down =) |

This would come with abuse...That is the only downfall I see. It would be annoying and time wasting to have moderators running to false claims...

Or when put like that......... but couldn't mods simply, for lack of other words, ban said members performing said claims. And so people can't remove their post once it has been reported, no delete button. Only mods can delete posts after it has been proven that said person has posted said post. Reporting a deleted post could be a bit of a strain.

They COULD ban said players but it would still make them run around after useless posts for a time...
Time, I'm guessing, is precious to Mods. If people heard of said report or saw that this would lead to angry remarks and possibly wars. EDIT: IF we used the "You cannot delete your post once reported" idea. |

Its a common rule that abuse of the report system results in a ban. If you resort to a player reporting system that will assist, not run, the moderating staff...the rule for abuse of such a system is inserted so as to save moderators the headache of dealing with that...
however, if you see the vast number of posts that go off in this forum...reading each and every one can be a headache in itself. Having this around would leave the advanced forum almost totally player moderated and give the mods one less place to look. Consider that most players that are supposed to be inside the Advanced section should have the ability to police themselves and others around them. Also, those players mingle in the lower levels of the forum and thus would be like assistant moderators. And we already can't delete our posts Harsu. Only edit. Sure, a player could edit out there problem...but they wouldn't be notified of their problem until the mods jumped down their throat. Or if they did, at least there would be a warning. Trust me, would you rather have a world with a neighborhood watch that occasionally does poorly or a place where the police are few and the town is huge? I'd like the former with the latter invovled. The police would appreciate our assistance...and if you have enough insight to point out that there is abuse...you're obviously a player/visitor who isn't at risk from this problem.

I remember moderating on this one forum that took many precautions to make sure such things never happened. Only moderators were allowed to edit their posts unlimitedly--everyone else had a number or later a time limit, I think.
We encouraged the members to report because we were understaffed and had many boards. There was simply too much to read and keep an eye on even if you divided the moderators to specific sections. I ended up feeling more like a clean-up crew and the place lost its fun appeal. The only time I went to a claim and found nothing was when another moderator had reached there before me. Overly, the button was hardly abused and when it was, it was because of power hungry. Many members, if they used it at all, used it responsibly. This is the first time I've come across a forum without a report button. |

Most players are capable of ignoring posts that they fully realize isn't on topic...
That, and the important thing about reports is that the player isn't notified they'd been reported. The mod is notified and they can deal with it as they wish. This (report) is usually followed up by a private message from the mod to the violating player as a warning, along with the mod dealing with, forcefully editing, or giving the player a chance to edit their post and save some face. If this isn't dealt with the mod simply delete's the post and the day is saved. That way, they only need to attend to places that they believe might be trouble spots...while other places would be self-policed on some days when the mod is pressed for time and they are attending to only business.

You can always PM mods when you have concerns or complaints about other RPers. I, personally, am not a fan of publically denouncing people, it tends to lead to chaos and flame wars - which we are adamantly against.
Also, you *can* delete your own posts I believe, as I have come across posts that were removed by the author. |
