::TO ALL WHO ARE READING THIS POST AND ITS CONTENTS::
First off, entirely ignore ninja25252...I'm counting how many posts he gets off before a moderator can personally find and deal with him and all his posts. Secondly, a "report this post" button doesn't notify anyone except the mod. The mods recieve a tiny private message which contains a link, a small player added description of the problem they had with the post, and that's IT. There is no public announcement and there is no other identifying information. In fact, in some cases the "RTP" buttons don't even give the name of WHO reported it. That way even the mod can't identify the reporter. That I haven't enjoyed...but such anonyminity can be added to sights. Third, this incessant fear of a flame war aggrivates me. The people who will flame are not concerned with it. Besides, I doubt your moderator staff is intelligent to post inside OOC that, "HEY! bobby reported jimmy for posting pornographic pictures inside the IC section guys." and left it at that, open for some retarded flame war. Flames are EASY to stop once a "RTP" is added. report the post at the start of the flame war. Notify it as flaming...and the mod can close that channel and any subsequent flames. If the player continues flaming, which is against our MARVELOUS rules, he gets banned. Simple. Fourth, I am already seeing places where our culprit in this particular case is beginning to aggrivate and annoy players. Obviously even this thread POPPING up and publicly calling him out, he hasn't been dealt with yet. So if you want to avoid flame wars, wouldn't it be better if there WAS a system that privately dealt with him? PRIVATELY? Right now, in order to deal with someone that may be hiding under the moderator's noses, I have to publicly call them out. This is FAR more likely to begin a flame war than pming a mod with the system that points out problems. Wouldn't you agree? Flame wars come from public denouncement. Right now, the only way to get the attention of moderators for this problem is publicly denouncing a player...this is more likely to start a flame war than having a built in pm system.

But was the flame war caused by people reporting on one another? Or was it caused by something else? Or were the people reporting stupid enough to let the person being reported know?
The report button is a good tool if the members know how to use it. If its something minor in an RP or thread, then a simple PM or note to the person doing it will most likely fix the problem without getting the mod team involved. In cases such as what brought up in this conversation, the report button would have been useful to alert mods to the situation at hand without them having to search for all the violated threads themselves and to catch it early. |

Alright, Ninja is being handled.
Re: Flame wars, It was just a comment, there is no "fear" of flame wars, I was just expressing why a public reporting thread is bad, which brings me to the next point. I didn't read your post as clearly as I had thought and obviously mis-interpreted it. I know exactly what you mean now, and I think it's a fantastic idea and will ensure it's passed along to the admins because I agree that it would be helpful. And lastly, there is a second way to get a mods attention about a player - which is via PM, and it is not a public denouncement. |

I understand the pming...and its generally the same thing, sure...
I just am not as familiar with who the mods are until I took a very close look at the players online... Perhaps one more thing to consider... Make the mods/admins have different colors for their names so they are more visible as mods if you plan to continue without a "RTP" button?

Aye, fair enough.
There is a link somewhere that had the list of moderation staff. Can't find it (which is kind of lolz) but here it is for your future reference: http://roleplayerguild.com/showgroups.php |
