Why not just set it during the Victorian era only Britain is working on exploring the moon in clockwork coal-burning aether balloons or something?
It would seriously reduce the amount of effort that would be involved in creating your own setting. |

almond's idea makes a nice setting, but to succeed, it needs a bit of a plot. To recap what he wrote: A floating sky country that trades with whatever country they're passing through. Filled with zeppelins and propeller planes and whatnot buzzing about, as well as docked sky ships.
Suppose that as the years go on, this sky country starts only trading with certain countries - those that have the resources it desires to sustain itself. Other 'third world' countries have little to offer and are left out of the loop, perpetuating a state in which these lesser ground countries continue to lack the technology to make them viable trading cousins. Desperate to even out the gap, the countries send 'learning envoys' to sneak up to the sky country and learn take some of its technology as their own. Add in some necessary political intrigue within the sky country itself and perhaps a twisted overly ambitious version of the East India Company. *shrug* Most of my steampunk ideas tend to involve twisted political intrigue, I don't know why. |

I love Steampunk - I'm up for either historical or fantasy, though I'd prefer nothing too ridiculously anime-ish.
