Default A Rather Untraditonal Fairytale (TrippingTirger and APH3O)

Prince Christopher looked out into the kingdom of Metedane, the kingdom which someday his older brother, Victor, would rule. Meanwhile, the young prince sat in his study, surrounded by organized stacks of books, reading a thousand page text on Philosophy. More specifically, it was a tome written by the ancient philosopher Gwen Kixop, a woman of great intellect, whose ideas regarding the nature of morality were considered legendary, though of course, in the scholar's eyes, not necessarily the final word on the subject, simply one erudite view. He was largely ignored by his family, and the people of Metedane, as, let us face it, he was not the typical prince. He had never excelled in jousting, or archery, or any of the other sports and skills that were expected of a seventeen-year-old prince, such as speaking with arrogance or sweeping young women from their feet. Instead, his scrawny appearance, pale skin, light brown hair, and green bespectacled eyes were better suited for study. Skills that he did excel in included mathematics, the known sciences, philosophy, debate, and the culinary, visual, and musical arts. Still, by his family and most of the kingdom, he was considered rather weak and pathetic.

Sighing, the young prince arose from his comfortable cloth chair and strolled over to the window, gazing out at the gardens through the dark blue velvet curtains. He looked all around him, the books arranged in piles that to anyone else would look horribly disorganized, but that in his mind, was perfectly logical. The thick leather-bound volumes were visible in every direction of the tiny room. The size of this disorganized abode was perhaps made to appear even more insignificant by the darkness. Usually, Prince Christopher read by the light of one or two lanterns or candles. His maidservant, Maria, had claimed that that would ruin his eyes, but he was generally too stubborn to listen to advice until he learned the lesson himself.

((Love the title!<3))

"Are you sure? They sound like they'd be no use at all!" A female's voice asked, sounding hesitant and suspicious. "It doesn't seem right. Why would I want someone pampered who hasn't worked a day in their lives to help me out? It just seems....stupid."
"Yes, I'm positive. It's tradition, my dear. Now go, I want to count my skulls again." Answered a deep, gravely voice. A bolder shifted in the side of a mountain and from it walked a young lady, looking rather down and unsure of this. Her eyes, a deep, forest green, held the look of one who had been around for many years. With a sigh she flipped flame red hair over her shoulder, then lit up in flames. For a few seconds her body was submersed in fire, glowing blue and white with heat, but then in her place was a fierce creature.

Scales the color of rubies flashed in the sunlight. The beast's shoulder was well over a man's head, and a long, graceful neck supported her head, twin horns sprouting from just over her catlike eyes. Bunching her muscles, she leaped into the air, bat like wings opening to catch the wind. Pumping hard, she lifted up, then soared through the air, her destination the land that lay just past the woods from her home in the mountains.

After a trip that would have taken a human hours on foot, or even horse back, was a matter of minuets for her. Alighting on the ground, she folded her wings to her, once more becoming a human. Clad in the garb of a commoner, although in male's clothes, not female's, she tied her curly hair back, then started making tracks for the castle.

"Go find a princess and have her be your maid. Great! Just what I wanted, some wining, sniveling, little...human groveling at my feet and screaming whenever I light a flame." She muttered to herself as she trudged towards town. "Hope this kingdom has a prince I could take instead. Can't stand the idea of a princess. At least a prince is suppose to be strong and brave. And they don't scream." She said with a shutter.

As she walked and grumbled to herself, the dragon girl got many odd looks from townsfolk. But at least they weren't screaming and running in terror. That part came after she got to the castle. It wouldn't be hard, she'd just get close, turn into the dragon she was, punch in a window, and make off with a prince if she could. If not, well....she was afraid she'd have to hurt a few people and cause a bit of destruction to get what she wanted. Oh well. She was nearing the castle now, all she needed to do was get past the guards. A good sob story or something should get her into the courtyard. Once there it would be so easy to not go to the king and instead get away with her prize. But first, time for some acting.

Christopher muttered to himself, still contemplating the existence of a soul, and the relationship between mind, body, and the supposed spirit. There were so many theories on the matter that it was often mind-boggling. Obviously each religion possessed its own view, and then the different philosophers had varying views, though one had to sift through their semantic games to find them, often to find that they were sometimes more similar than they pretended to be.

Just then, his ‘dear’ brother, Prince Victor, entered the room. “How are you today, brother?” he asked innocently.

“I am fine, Victor. Is there anything you desire?” Christopher answered in his most polite tone, though he really did not want to be bothered at the moment.
“Yes, dearest brother, why don’t we go hunting or something?” his brother asked, and for the millionth time, Christopher refused.
“You know I don’t enjoy those things. I prefer to contemplate the universe.”
“Why can’t you simply leave that to the scholars?! You are so strange, Chris, such a wimp.”
“View it this way, brother. I am supposed to become your advisor when you gain the throne, correct? Who would make a better advisor, a scholar or a hunter? Besides, I am not weak and you know it. I just prefer to fight with words rather than with swords.” As Christopher spoke to his brother, he barely looked at him. He did not enjoy making eye contact for some reason; he supposed it was too much time spent with his nose in his books. Besides, the young man could have sworn he saw something outside, in the sky, flying. But no. It could not have been; it must have been a trick of the light.
“Oh very well.” Victor replied, sighing, though not without the smug and arrogant tone that his younger brother loathed. “But I am the one laughing when the ladies of the court follow me around and avoid you like a leper. Meanwhile, you go back to your cooking and your violin like some servant.”
“I shall. Quite frankly, I have no use for women who see me for nothing more than my influence and appearance. But please just leave, brother. I did not intend to argue.”
“Oh fine!” Victor shouted back to his brother’s polite, almost apathetic tone. With that, he stalked out of the room, annoyed at the mild insults his brother had thrown at him without so much as a glance. With that entertaining dialogue over, Prince Christopher returned to staring out of the study window, gazing at the clouds, down to the orchids in the garden, as if nothing of consequence had occurred, and well, to him, nothing of significance had, these mild debates with his brother were all too common, especially of late.

As soon as she was inside the gates, but near the castle, the young looking lady smirked. Those idiots that let her in, they were too busy examining her body to realize she wasn't crying, even as she sniffed and sobbed something about a house being lost in a fire and being all alone. Once again she let herself catch on fire, scaring the same dumb guards senseless.
"GET SOME WATER! QUICK!" Someone yelled as a bunch of men crowded around, looking like they were about to have heart attacks.

Laughing to herself, she turned into a dragon, her wings outspreading as she leaped into the air. For a bit she soared around the castle, glancing in windows. There! She'd found someone with a crown. Two someones, actually. With a smirk, she dove towards the window, but pulled away as an arrow whizzed passed her face.

Aiming away from the people on the ground, she spewed fire at their feet. She didn't want to hit them, she hated the smell of burning flesh. As they scattered, she flew back to the window, promptly punching it in and blindly grabbing. Smirking, which looked odd on a dragon, she snatched out a human, checking only for a second to make sure it was a male and one that she'd seen from before. Yup, it was one of the two. Although she didn't know if it was the one she'd targeted as the prince she was after. It didn't matter, she had to go.

Clenching her prize in her claws gently, she flew even higher, grinning down at the men who were trying to shoot her with their arrows, missing by far, then scattering to avoid their own rain of deadly missiles.

'Stupid humans.' She thought, soaring away from the castle, which was now all in a panic. Happily she returned to her mountains, flying over the forests before landing awkwardly on the ledge of her home, careful not to hurt her passenger. Putting him down, she nudged him towards the entrance of her cave, surprisingly small for a dragon of her size. The cave, of course, widened out and was plenty big enough for her and all her treasures, which is why she loved it. No one thought that a dragon could turn to a human, so they always bypassed her cave.

"Go on in." She told him in her booming voice. As a dragon it was a deep rumble, sounding like rocks falling, not the girl she was as a human. It was impossible for someone to tell her gender if they didn't already know, unless they were a dragon themselves.

Entirely oblivious to the commotion just outside his window, Christopher had shrugged as his elder brother had turned his back to him, leaving the room. What made the two of them so different? Was it not more prudent to rule with intelligence than brute strength?

For a few minutes, Christopher fell into such deep contemplation that his thoughts began to become muddled, finally becoming lulled into a state of semi-consciousness, as the mid-afternoon sun beat down on his someone loose though of course, never sloppy, seeing as tradition would not allow it, midnight blue tunic. That mildly pleasant state was most rudely shattered when the young prince found himself being whisked out of his window with such an acceleration that he seemed to leave his innards back at the window sill.

After his nausea subsided and he began to become accustomed to the idea of flying in the arms of this, whatever it was, some sort of reptilian creature that he could not quite see, surely not what he thought it was, Christopher could not help but gaze upon the towns and villages of Metedane that appeared, from this height, to be tiny blurs. The forests and grasses dominated the rolling landscape until the pair reached the mountains, gray and mildly foreboding. It was, in a sense, an incredible thrill to see so much from a new perspective. After all, how many humans ever had the chance to fly? The only problem was that by the time the young scholar had grown comfortable enough to enjoy the views, he had almost forgotten that he was now a captive. His mind had already wondered to this amazing opportunity.

This changed quite quickly when they reached the cave, however. When this strange creature finally set him on the ground, Chris turned to look at it more closely. No, it cannot be. They are creatures of lore! They don’t exist!! Certainly no where near Metedane! But then it occurred to him, they were no where near his homeland. This, dragon, as strange as that was to believe, had captured him, for what purpose, he could not know. So for now, out of fear, he walked in quietly, frightened for his life at the moment. That would likely change soon, however.

As soon as she was sure that her new pet human was inside her cave, the majestic dragon smirked. She waited just a bit, then let her swirl of fire over take her. Bright, flame red scales melted away, turning into a loose shirt and pants of the same color. Barefooted and with a ruby pendant hanging around her neck, she giggled, pleased with how this was going.

After attempting to tame her wild locks by tying them back with a bright red ribbon, she entered, hardly glancing at the prince she'd stolen. "Come with me." She said, her voice dancing as if a flame twirling and leaping in a slight wind. Her eyes were alight with the same look, as if burning from within. It was as if she was made of fire, hardly contained in her human form. Which was true, in a way.

"I'll show you where you stay and what you are to do." She informed him, glancing back at the young prince. "Now come." With that, she started walking down a tunnel that lead from her main room back to some smaller rooms. Her sleeping, treasure, and spare rooms, and the kitchen.

"I hope you are able to cook. And are good at organizing. That is to be your job. Chef and treasure master." She added, pausing just as it was starting to get too dark to see. "Have any problems with that?" She asked sharply, glancing back over at him. "If so, better speak up now while I'm in a good mood."

Not even bother to wait for him to answer, she giggled and said, "Good. Now come on." Snapping her fingers, she created a little flame which danced and twirled in her palm, lighting up the tunnel filling it with light. Enough for anyone to see as well as if they were in the sun light. "Your room will be the first on the left. We'll go there first." She informed him as she considered to pace down the hall. Normally she made the walk as a dragon, and it took very little time to get down the huge hall. As a human, though, it took three times as long and seemed to be four times as far. She hadn't been human while in her caves for years. She'd forgotten how big it was. Frowning slightly, she shook her head, although said nothing. Her human was going to have to make walks like this several times, she'd survive this once.

Watching as the dragon morphed into a human being, not just a human, a rather attractive auburn-haired woman, the prince found himself appalled, though his fear for his life was beginning to subside, to be increasingly replaced with indignation and confusion as she ordered him around as if he were some servant. Still, he followed her without a word, more due to his curiosity and respectful demeanor than anything else. Well, my parents, not to mention Victor, always said that I acted more like a servant than a prince, he thought with wry sarcasm.

Structurally, Prince Christopher had to admit that he found the size of this cave impressive. Even for an individual who had grown up in a palace, he found the volume truly amazing for an abode cut from stone. So the legends regarding dragons and treasure are true, he thought as they passed the treasure room. At one point, she asked him if he had any questions. In answer, the young pragmatic prince was just about to open his mouth in order to point out his long list of questions and reservations when the female dragon made it quite obvious that she found his answer inconsequential by continuing before he could respond. He found himself entirely shocked by her words, and not a little indignant at the idea of what she was asking.

Their footsteps echoed down the massive hall and the rather shy prince finally found the words with enough time to put his thoughts in edgewise. He stopped, watching as she did the same, with an incomprehensible expression. “Madam, with all due respect, what rights do you possibly have to simply kidnap me like this? You are treating me as if I were nothing but a rather ignorable servant, which is rather irritating. At least speak to me with respect as an equal, if you must speak with me at all. Furthermore, you must be making an attempt at some sort of ridiculous prank in this capture, and being facetious in actually expecting me to prepare your food and to organize your treasure for you. You cannot possibly expect me to do any favors for a complete stranger who refuses to show any reasoning for her request or any manner of decency in her tone. Apologies madam, but I do believe that I deserve an explanation.” The prince spoke these words with only a slight portion of his indignation becoming revealed through his tone, after all, he was not going to disrespect a lady. Meeting her forest green eyes, the young man waited for a response.

Tipping her head to the side, the girl smiled. "Perhaps I'm in for more then I thought." She said as she watched him, almost amused. In truth, she had no clue at how to act around him. She was only use to dragons, and those had no respect for anyone if they didn't have more treasure. And then it was a resentful respect. "Alright, I'll explain." she said agreeably. "But work with me, I'm not use to humans. They're such small creatures, I tend to try to avoid them, even if we are cousins."

Shrugging she turned from him, entering a room that was actually human sized. Door and everything. "This is your room. Need anything? Just tell me, I'll do my best to keep you comfortable." She promised, letting her fire move from the palm of her hand to one of her fingers. Smiling at the happy little flame, she walked over to light a few lamps, then walked to the fire place. Blowing on the fire, it shot out like her dragon's breath, filling the fire place with a crackling, cheery fire that smelled of....cinnamon?

Frowning slightly as she sniffed the air, she sighed. "Sorry if you don't like the smell, I knew I shouldn't have taken the logs Totsuo gave me." She said with a sigh. "His human was obsessed with the smell. No wonder he ate her so soon after getting her." Shaking her head, she took a seat on one of the many chairs in the room, then looked at the prince. "Have a seat."

Watching him as if highly curious, which she was, she followed him with her eyes, letting them flick all over his body, studying his every move. She understood him as little as he understood her. He intrigued her. Particularly the way he stood up for what he thought was right. She'd never met a dragon's princess who would do that. Of course, this was a prince, so she expected him to be different. But still.

"Alright, I suppose if you found me rude, I'll have to apologize. So, I'm sorry. Now, I'll answer your questions." She promised, deciding it could do no harm to do so. "But you have to answer mine first. What is your name?" That was all she wanted to know for now. She couldn't expect to call him 'human' the whole time. And, though he was a pet, of sorts, he already had a name, and she thought it easier to call him by that name then to make up a new one and confuse them both.

The manner in which this foreign, well, not just foreign, downright strange, woman observed him was a bit disconcerting, but Christopher ignored the feeling in favor of more rational thought. Nodding, the prince followed this enigma of a dragon, though they were probably all this enigmatic, into what was to be his new bedchamber. It was a rather modest room, in both size and furnishing, though not uncomfortable. It was perhaps more humble than the prince was accustomed to, but he had always found the palace rooms more spacious than necessary in any case. Once the lights were lit, though they were underground, the room was oddly pleasant, with a simple wooden table, several chairs, shelves, and a small, but cozy-looking, bed covered in a quilt. While certainly not as grandiose as the rest of the abode, the room looked quite comfortable.

Watching with fascination as his dragon captor and companion lit the lamps and fire, Christopher could not help but wonder what chemical reaction caused the spontaneous combustion. He would have to add that to his list of questions to ask when they were finished with the tour. Warily he sat down, noting her words as he had noted all of the previous ones, still rather cautious regarding the idea of being watched.

“Very well then,” the young scholar answered, his tone mostly calm, though ever so slightly clipped and cold with defensiveness. Making clear eye contact, he answered, “My name is Prince Christopher Vorlais, more simply, just Christopher. I have many more questions for you, however. I appreciate the hospitality and your change of tone, but what makes you think that you have the right to bring me here in the first place? Who are you and why on Earth would you expect me to do your chores for you when you have simply pulled me out of my window with no warning whatsoever?! Additionally, where in Therganal’s name are we?” he asked, exasperation becoming increasingly present in his tone. Those were only the beginning of his numerous list of questions, but they were the most pertinent, and he decided that it would be best to show some politeness himself by not overloading this woman down with all of them at once.

Tipping her head to the side, the young, at least, young by dragon standards, currently lady regarded the man before her. He was...different, to say the least. She really hadn't prepared for it. shrugging, she decided that it was just because he was a prince, not princess, and ignored it. Leaning back and getting comfortable, she smiled, her eyes locked on his, something he seemed to prefer.

"Hmm...you did have a lot of questions. Let's see, how do we start answering them?" She mused, looking quite entertained by her new, as she sorta thought, pet. Although she wasn't sure if that was the right term. That was what the dragons called their princesses, so she guessed that was what she was suppose to call her prince, but she wasn't quite positive. There was a lot she wasn't positive of, but still. She was trying, and that's what she thought counted.

"What right do I have? Simple, I am a dragon, and you are a mere human." She answered with a little shrug, looking as if she thought his question had an obvious answer, and as if it was slightly amusing. "Now who am I? I am Tanis Iussu Ignis, youngest daughter of Ryuu Iussu Ignis, king of the dragon kin." She informed him, giving a little half bow from her seat, although she really didn't put much effort into it. "However, you may call me Tanis or Tanny. Why do I have expect you to work for me? Why my dear prince, it is tradition. A dragon honors a human and allows them to live with them, giving them all the care they desire, and in exchange the human works for them. How do you not know this?" She asked, looking almost puzzled.

"Your last question, for now I am assuming. Where are we? Why that one is quite easy, I am most surprised that you haven't guessed this already. I thought you to be smarter then that. We are in my cave. Most specifically, my guest room, and for now, your room within my cave." Tanis answered, her look once again almost amused at this human's questions. It almost looked as if she was suppose to add 'silly boy' to the end of her answers. "Now, any more questions you wish to ask of me, or shall we be moving on to the other rooms?"
