Jacob lightly pulled the reigns of his warhorse Ginger and soon the other soldiers did too, taking them around the corner of a large house. The town was nearly deserted due to the Varden's invasion of the southern part of the Empire. That was also the reason Jacob was in the town; He and his squad of nine men had been sent on a reconnaissance mission to find out just how far the Varden had made it into the Empire. It was the fifth day of their trip and they would have to hurry to get all of the necessary information. They had stopped in the town hoping the residents could give them any news of the Varden. So far they had had no luck, the people were either loyal to the Varden or genuinely had no information on them, Jacob believed it was the first.

Spotting a group kids playing in the street, Jacob spoke to the men following behind him. “Maybe they’ll be more helpful, maybe they won’t have their parent’s misplaced trust in the Varden.” With a squeeze of Jacob’s legs, Ginger picked up speed and trotted closer to the kids.

“Excuse me,” he said to a boy who looked almost forteen years old, “you wouldn’t be able to give us any information on the whereabouts of the Varden army, would you?” The kid shook his head. Using the most menacing voice he could, Jacob asked, “You wouldn’t lie to us, would you? If you did, and we were to find out, thing… Well, they wouldn’t be good.” Jacob placed his hand on his sword and rubbed the pommel hoping to scare the boy. He had no intention of hurting him, but he needed information. “You’re quite sure?”

“Yes sir, I don’t know, honest!”

Jacob didn’t reply, a strange looking woman was riding into town and frankly, something didn’t sit right within Jacob about her. “Five of you stay here and question the others, the rest, come with me,” he said as he pointed his horse towards the woman. “She doesn’t sit right with me.”

Leiyah finally reached some form of civilization. She sagged against the neck of her white-grey horse and kissed her neck. "Good girl," she said, relief in her voice. She was hungry; she hadn't caught anything in her snares for a few days and had been forced to eat questionable berries. If she remembered correctly, this was one of the towns that lay just on the invisible border between lands the Varden had claimed and lands that were still firmly held by the Empire. Her mission: to determine how much of a grasp the Empire had on these middle-lands, how much they had poisoned the minds of the people or tortured them.

But first, food.

Leiyah rode down the street, a light breeze rippling at the ruffled blondeish hair in a loose braid. And she looked up and nearly stopped. Knights of the Empire...ten of them. And they were coming towards her. The tall elf had a few options here. Turn and run. Get defensive and fight. Play stupid. In the end she chose the latter, and continued riding down the street, hoping to pass for some woman going home to her family...though of course she looked nothing of the sort.

"Whoa," Jacob muttered to Ginger and the horse slowed to a stop in front of the strange lady. A quick look at the girl told that she wasn't a villager; She wore pants, something not done by any woman Jacob knew and certainly not proper. Her other attire included a dark green tunic, a wide belt, and something, Jacob was not sure what, was poking the tunic up on both sides of her.

"Hello trave..." Jacob began. Then he froze, her ears, they were pointed. Jacob had never seen an elf but from all of the stories he had ever heard he knew that thy had pointed ears. Why though, would an elf be in the Empire, not to mention on this side of it? The elves lived on the other side of the Empire and hadn't been seen for more than a hundred years. Maybe her ears were just more pointed than usual, besides Jacob had never seen an elf to compare her to, so he continued on.

"What is your name and what is your business here?"

Leiyah straightened, noticing his gaze linger over her ears. Quickly she pulled some already loose hair around her ears and tried to assume a look of innocense. She never was good at the acting part her job required, and hoped she wouldn't give herself away.

"Myra," she replied, thinking up a name quick. "I am only passing through, on my way to - " She looked over, seeing the other guards and just now noticing the children whom they were questioning. Something hot and angry charged up to Leiyah's face and her eyes narrowed instinctively. She pursed her lips and looked to the Imperial Knight before her. "Please," she said curtly, "Please do tell me why you are harassing children in the street?" She knew it was stupid to say, she was going to get herself captured, but if it was one thing she could not brook it was needless cruelty. And clearly the children were frightened and confused.

Jacob watched her hand pull some hand up around her ears. So she wants to hide them? Maybe she is an elf... With his suspicions aroused once again, Jacob squeezed his horse and circled around the girl. It was an intimidation technique, maybe he could fluster her and cause her to make another mistake. As he passed around behind her, he took a close look at her back, but the tunic was too loose to see anything but the bulges he had already noticed.

"Well, Myra, let's just say the people around here have been less than helpful. Children tend to have loose lips." Jacob smiled at her reassuringly, "don't worry, they're fine." Not thinking about it, Jacob dropped his hand to the pommel of his sword and began rubbing it with his palm. "Myra, where are you on your way to, and why?" Waiting for an answer, Jacob stared into her eyes, never breaking away.

In her head, Leiyah let loose a flurry of self-deprecating curses. She followed the gaze of the Knight as he circled her, and her grey horse skittered to the side a little. She wasn't afraid of him as much as she was infuriated. How dare he bother innocent children with his own personal gain? Her eyes flicked quickly to the men he'd brought with him. Leiyah had been trained in fighting, but there was no possible way she could take them all.

Her gaze faltered only slightly as she saw his hand on his sword, and the elf swallowed. No, no no no, this can't happen. I have to get away from him. I don't know if I'm strong enough to hold the Varden's secrets if I were captured...."Cailmra," she replied steadily, gazing into the man's eyes with confident, if not intimidating, ferocity. "I'm visiting my family. That's none of your concern," she said, hoping to throw him off with her own confidence. Nonetheless Leiyah's heart beat a little faster. She'd been in tight situations before, but this man seemed suspicious and determined.

Jacob barely noticed her swallow. Was he getting to her or was she just swallowing? He couldn't be sure, but he hoped that he was getting to her. He sighed, the sun was only getting higher in the sky, time was valuable. However, he didn't want to do anything to upset the lady if she really was just going to visit her family. With a moment of further he thought, he decided to forget her feelings. Normally he wouldn't have but he was in a hurry.

"Cailmra, huh?" Jacob acted as if he was scratch his neck and motioned to his men behind. Obviously they didn't get the message because none of them moved. No worry, there was no way she could hope to try and out run them. "Tell me elf, what do your parents do?" Jacob smiled at the word elf and slid his sword from its sheath. He spurred Ginger lightly in one side and pulled on the reigns causing the horse to turn ninety degrees so that they were looking at the middle of the Myra's horse.

Leiyah hissed and immediately pulled a long knife from a sheath on her back before pulling on her horse's reins and whirling backwards. A ferocious look of the elven warrior came upon her face as her eyes narrowed. "I warn you, stay back," she said, voice firm and even, though she knew she was heavily outnumbered. Her heart started beating rapidly against her chest. I have got to get out of this...

Leiyah looked the knight steadily in the face. "I am not to be contended with," she added for emphasis, all but baring her teeth at him.

Jacob pulled back on the reigns and his horse took a few steps backwards. So that was what was behind her back. This could be a problem, elves were naturally stronger than humans, so he couldn't fight her one on one. Maybe, if he could somehow drag her off of her horse, they could pin her down and then bind her legs and feet. Jacob twirled the sword as he stared into Myra's eyes, still thinking about what his next move would be.

"You are outnumbered, five to one right now and there are five others over there," he said jerking his head to where the other knights were still questioning the kids. "To be honest, I don't think you could escape." Jacob didn't quite believe this and broke eye contact when he said it. "Be reasonable Myra and just give yourself up. There is no need to have a fight." No reply came, Myra just stared right back at him. Jacob took this as a 'no' and sighed, there would be a fight.

Jacob noticed out of the corner of his eyes that the others were spreading out and around Myra. Suddenly he spurred Ginger and the horse jumped forward towards Myra and her horse. As they passed, Jacob leapt off towards Myra and tried to hook his arm around her and drag her out of the saddle.

Leiyah hesitated, unsure whether to run or not. In the end she did not, staying and staring at the knight, knife in hand. She cried out as he leapt at her, grasping her around the middle and nearly knocking the air out of her body. In reflex, the arm with the knife came up and sliced at his arm in a swift motion, even as the grey horse panicked and tried to flee. After a brief moment of recovery Leiyah megan to move. She twisted in his grip and got the point of the knife down, pointing towards the base of his throat.
