Charis snuggled up against Alex, leaning her head on his chest and watching the sunrise. That was what she loved about Alex. No matter how busy either of them might be, they always found time to be with each other. She was fairly sure she loved him - she had for a few months now. And Charis found there was nowhere she'd rather be than in Alex's arms. She sat up a little when he got the phone call. She listened quietly, patiently, looking at the seriousness on Alex's face. For a long moment Alex listened, and then Charis' own cell phone rang. She sat further up and scootched away from him a little and answered. "Hello? This is she." And she listened as she was informed - Her own people, in the eastern part of New Baverstock, would be rebelling against the government and try to break free and form a new country. Her slightly darker skin had put them in a disadvantage to people who despised immigrants, and Charis' people were sick and tired of it. They wanted their own country and they wanted Charis to help. "No," she said to the official on the phone. "I think this is a bad idea, and I don't want to get involved." Everything was going so well! She was happy with Alex, a steady boyfriend, a steady job and almost done with her degree at school. "There is no choice," said the voice tersely. "If you do not comply your family will be terminated for aiding our enemies." They hung up the phone and Charis, eyes wide and unbelieving, hung up also. It was a long moment before she turned to Alex, open terror in her face. "What do we do?" she whispered quietly.

Alex listened to Charis as she tried to decline the demand, he looked at her and shrugged slightly. "I don't know what we should do, I want to stay with you but we can't be together unless one of us doesn't join the military, but then either one of our families would be killed." He sighed and wrapped his arms around her, small tears developing in his eyes as he thought for a moment. "I really don't want to lose you, maybe we can find a way of being together like we are now?" A smile of hope grew as he came up with the idea. "Actually, that's not a bad idea, but how would we get around all those military issues, like no man's land and all those other things holding us back?" |

Charis took a shaky sigh and leaned against Alex, pressing her face into his neck and stroking his hair. "I don't know," she said in a shaky voice. "I have no idea what we can do. I...I guess we're just going to have to do what they say. And...and try to see each other when we can." She didn't even want to think about the possibility of either of them dying. "Oh, god. Why, Alex?" she started sobbing against his skin. "Why, when we are so happy? Alex, I - " She pulled back just enough to look into his eyes. She might not have a better time to say it. "I love you," she said quietly and fervently.

As Charis stroked his hair and leaned against him, Alex just held her close to him while listening to her. "We wont just give in and do what they say, we'll see each other regardless." He thought that their relationship would have lasted, but it was obvious that it might end because of the war. As she sobbed into his neck he sighed and stroked her hair slowly. "I don't know Charis, it's like something doesn't want us to be together anymore." He looked down at her when she told him she loved him and he gave her a smile. "That's another thing we have in common, we love one another. I love you too." He leaned down and kissed her cheek softly.

Charis smiled as she wiped away the tears from her nearly black eyes. "Well, what are we supposed to do?" she asked quietly. "I doubt they'll let us see each other during the - " Charis shudered. War. She had hoped that the bickering between their people would come to an end. That it would not come to this. But she knew people always looked for a way to differ from their neighbors. She didn't want to go to war. She didn't want Alex to go to war. Neither of them should even be involved in this, to fight and risk their lives for a cause neither of them believed in. "I don't want to lose you," said Charis softly, gazing deeply into his eyes. The sun had come up, and it was warming everything around them, warming the dew and calling to life a few birds and in the far distance, a couple of power plants and buzzing cars. "I guess we should go," she said reluctantly.

Alex smiled back and shrugged again. "Of course they wont let us see each other, but who said that we would be asking them if we can?" Though neither of them wanted to go to war it was a situation where wants don't exist. As she said she didn't want to lose him he thought of something that might work. "What if we faked our own deaths? Then we could be together but there is a chance that we might be found out." He nodded at her guess, sighing and giving her one last kiss on the cheek before kissing her on the lips softly. "We'll find a way to be together, trust me." |

Charis kissed him back and then nodded. "I can't stand it if we don't," she said quietly, and after a minute of sitting there next to Alex she stood, sighing away her tears and getting back to the job of living. She offered her hand to help pull Alex to his feet. Charis had school today, but she knew she would need to pack and leave for - she shuddered - boot camp. Foolish rebels, she thought dersisively. Leave well enough alone. We can't afford a war right now. But there was no use arguing with herself; they had made their decisions, and now Charis was going to have to fight for something she didn't believe in.

Alex stood while holding her hand and he gave her a hug, he too had school but he was certain that if he went he would just be pulled away from school to go to boot camp, so he went home and kissed Charis before he went inside. "I'll see you soon, believe me." While inside he started packing, putting a picture or two of them together into his bag and getting whatever else he felt he would needed. Right after he finished packing the military arrived at his home to pick him up. |

Charis went through her few classes that day with her head someplace else entirely. Some of the people in her classes had been drafted as well, but since Charis had moved to this side of the country she was one of the few who were being recruited to help the rebels. In the end Charis gave up and skipped her last class before returning to her one-bedroom apartment and putting some clothes and accessories together. She found she needed to hear the sound of Alex's voice, so she dialed his number on her phone. She waited as she heard the ringing on the other line.
