I love both types but if I had to pick one or the other it would be forum role playing. This is because forum role play is easy to keep up on busy and slow days. But it hold other advantages too. Say if you made a role playing game that is heavily focused on the 'game' part you may need extra things. Such as a map and its more difficult to keep updating a map in a chat rp and make sure every one has a copy of the most up to date map.

Forum RP'ing also allows for longer posts to drop hints about certain events or develop more complex characters.

Yeah, I also started off with IRCs but I found myself to be wasting half my day sitting in front of my computer, rping. It's faster and more...fun, in my opinion. However, in forums, I get to actually have a life. I take five minutes to post and then go about my day. I dunno, I think foruming is a tad bit boring and slow, but for some reason I find it way better than IRCs.

i tried to play IRC once or twice, but it never took off too well. I dont like the pace of IRC, its too fast and there's not much feeling in the posts. there also is the problem of posting a the same time, and that brings fights. Forum RP i like most for now, this is the first one i really like. have been trying some others, but they weren't as good as this one The interactions are so much deeper in forum RP.

I have to say ForumRP also; I like how you can post in your own time

I do forum RP, but since I've never done chat RP, where would be a good place to go?

When I began roleplaying it was in a Spanish IRC. Since I was a noob, it was kind of fun until I realized that it was very difficult to keep a story going. For example, at 6:00 p.m. on a monday, there'd be four of five people RPing a Saint Seiya episode. At 6:02, another group were RPing a DBZ episode or spin-off. By this time there were at least 20+ people trying to comunicate to each other, only to realize that their clever joke not only did not fit but was being mocked at the same time for interrupting the Cafe RP. Tuesday to Sunday, it was the exact same thing.
I did get bored and stopped roleplaying until I found a customized forum that was as good as a chat room. On the search page, the last twenty post appeared there, no matter the subject so basically, the wait time was a few minutes. It was great, until the admin kicked a bunch of people out because his lover couldn't fit in.
Since then, I've preferred forum RPs.
