Default The Ziz on Planet X

In the bold future...
Space is a whore. Not just any whore though, she's the kind of woman who will come to you one night, her bossoms offering in them a world of unimaginable wonder. But then, when you've been with her for a long time, discovered and embraced these wonders, she leaves you, frigid and alone: Stranded.

Naomi Hunt sighed and thought this to herself, standing on the hull of the crippled Ziz. The Ziz was a titan-class interplanetary cargo vessel, currently signed in as transporting a hold full of empty containers to Jupiter. It had been en route from Mars to Jupiter on a job when disaster struck.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
We'll start our tale on the vessel Ziz, sailing peacefully through the middle reaches of space. The passengers are all at peace, completely unaware that their lives are about to be cast asunder.

Tyler was taking a break from his janitorial duties, and his cigarette's use had run out. Throwing it away, he pulled out a package of the diesease sticks and a lighter he's had forever that just never went bad. The man light up his cigarette, putting it in his mouth and taking a puff. When that was taken care of, he sat on a nearby chair and took out a book, looking at the clock.

Minky wanders around the ship she'd sneaked on to, which was now floating peacefully through space. She'd lost her bag soon after she got on the ship, and she was still searching for it. She hears footsteps and the sounds of a lighter clicking, then the squeak of a chair as someone sat down. She creeps ever-so-quietly toward the room she thought it sounded like it was coming from. She peeks around the door, spotting a man, Tyler, who looked to be a janitor.

'Maybe he'd know where my bag is..' There was a chance that he'd already found it, too. She hesitates, as she knew she wasn't supposed to be on the ship, and so far hadn't been caught. 'Well... It's not like they'd turn the ship around and bring me back..' she thought.

Deciding to not think anymore about it, she steps into the doorway and moves into the room, her bare feet slapping against the floor purposefully, as she hoped she wouldn't have to announce herself. He'd just have to hear her and ask her what she was doing, or something to that effect.

Tyler was reading his favorite book when he heard the sound of Minky's feet. He looked up, noticing a little girl pounding her feet. "Just great," he thought, "She's probably the whiny daughter of some rich merchant. I guess dealing with her'll be easier than dealing with a whiny captain, though."

"Hey girl, why are you doing that?" Tyler asked, with nothing better to say.

Minky grins playfully, seeing that he'd talked first, which automatically gave her permission to talk back. "Doing what? I'm not doing anything." She walks up closer to him, eying his book curiously, even if she couldn't read.

She clasps her hands behind her and rocks on her heels, her head cocked to the side lightly as she watched the janitor. "Have you seen my backpack? It's pink." she asks him, hoping he had.

"Nope, not at all. Just go to wherever you remember it was last, and search from there," Tyler suggested, paying more attention to his book than to the little girl.

"I really hope she doesn't start complaining, that'd just be the worst," Tyler thought as he turned the page of his book while taking another puff of his cigarette.

"Oh. Okie." she says, not complaining in the slightest. She didn't mention that she didn't remember where she last had it.

"What are you reading?" she asks, her expression curious again. She wasn't sure if he wanted her to leave him alone or not, so she decided to simply wait until he asked her to go. She shuffles her feet lightly before crouching down. She hadn't sat or lied down in a while, having been exploring more than anything.

Father Juan sat in front of the makeshift shrine he'd built for St. Peter, not in prayer, but in thought. The Catholic Church had survived all sorts of scandal, catastrophe, and violence throughout its long history - amongst all the religions, it still claimed the most adherents, even in this society of the stars. But did that make it the right faith? No. It didn't. But something else did, something so fundamentally intertwined with Father Juan Cortez that there wasn't any other option.

The glistening icon of St. Peter caught his eye. How did you do it? Build a church from nothing? Preach in the capital of the empire that sought to destroy you? All in His Name. Juan didn't know how any person could act so selflessly, but he had determined to try ever since he was a young boy in seminary.

The altar contrasted vibrantly with its surroundings. He was in a space ship, traveling light years away from where he had originally been born. It was a cargo ship, and he'd been a passenger on it for quite some time. So long, in fact, that he might be considered part of the crew. He helped with engineering and inventory in between masses, and these side projects kept him from going insane. He sighed and stepped out into the hallway, crossing himself as St. Peter slipped from his peripheral vision.

It was then that he saw a young girl wander into a nearby doorway. She reminded him of some of the orphans his parish on Europa had once cared for, some of the orphans he had grown up with. But this wasn't Europa. This was a space ship, no place for a child. How she'd escaped detection this long, he didn't know, but she had to receive care.

"Hey!" he called out, running towards the doorway as the bottom of his cossack drifted back and forth along the ground. "What are you doing here?" He ran towards the door and held it just before it closed.

Minky whips around when she hears a shout from outside the room, the door caught just as it was closing. "Oh no. I got caught." she mutters, glancing around for a place to hide. "Don't tell anyone where I am." she whispers urgently, almost as if she were playing hide-n-seek.

She runs off to the corner of the room where a few boxes were stacked up already. She slips into a crack between them and the wall and remains there, hidden. After a few seconds, she leans out some to watch curiously, her light brown hair visible along with one of her teal eyes.

(OCC: Bah, gotta edit this. Fayth posts too fast. Okay, edited.)

"Ah, the book?" Tyler asked rhetorically, surprised that the girl wasn't whining yet, "It's called-"

The janitor was cut off by the religious man and the girl's request. "She doesn't seem too bad, and reminds me of myself for some reason. I suppose I can help her a little."

"Yeah, I saw a girl. She was just looking for her backpack, quit fussing over it," the smoker said, puffing some of his smoke in Juan's face, "She already left though, so don't bug me about it."

Tyler resumed reading his book, hoping to return to the quiet he was enjoying before the Father had entered the room.
