Chapter I - The First

It was the evening of the tenth moon of Annum 140 and Larcius was just finishing up the preparations for the morning ceremony. With the last of the ninety candles placed along the alter the priest of Palus turned on his heel and strode from the chapel.

His orange and yellow robes were tossed about in the wind that gusted through the village streets - his home was two blocks from his place of worship. The moon hung ominously above, its colour was a rusty red and cast a blood like glow on the city streets. Larcius was not a man who believed in curses, omens or bad luck - but that didn't make him any less uneasy.

As he rounded the last corner before his street he walked headlong into a man dressed in black. Larcius was nearly knocked from his feet, if it wasn't for the mans' quick reflexes as he caught the falling priest, he would have been. Larcius straigtened himself and thanked the man, the man simply nodded from beneath his wide brimmed black hat. The priest was a polite man, and so he stuck his hand out and introduced himself - the black figure shifted uneasily and nodded once more declaring himself as "Legion". Larcius simply smiled back at him, respecting his distance, thanked him once more and resumed he travel home.

Legion smiled.

~X~

The sun had just crested the horizon, casting a refreshingly warm glow on the faces of those congreated in the square before the temple to Palus. Larcius stood at the alter, his still hand lighting the last of the candles - it was a blessing that the air was still this morning for the ceremony would hold much less awe if the candles were not all ignited at once. AS it were, there was not a breath of wind and all ninety candles burned brightly behind the priest.

He turned back to face the glowing crowd, he beamed with joy as he cast his hands to the sky. The sun silhoutted him as it rose and he called to the heavens above, "Palus be our light, our guide and our friend. Show us the path to righteousness and drive away the demons that inhabit our souls."

At the completion of the final prayer the priest felt a pang of pain in his side. He grunted, the crowd remained silent. The pain shot up through his ribcage and rested for a moment in his chest. Larcius try to withhold the cry - the pain intensified and his entire nervous system flared with anger. He could not hold back and as his mouth open a wretched sound bellowed outwards. The crowd remained still as the priests body suddenly convulsed, and the man fell to the ground. His body was jerking and moving sporatically between screams of pain and cries for mercy. Suddenly his flesh began to tear and beneath the soft pallid skin was revealed to be thick grey muscly flesh on which the veins glowed blue. From his back sprouted great grey wings. His fingers became claws that uncontrollably tore the flesh from his face to reveal a blank ashen form underneath. The crowed did not move.

The creature stopped moving, silence filled the air. Moments stretched into minutes and finally the grey form stirred. It clambered slowly to its feet, as if it was the first time it had experienced life and was becoming accustomed to its body. Once it stood it examined itself with eyes that it did not appear to have. It was the same size and build of the priest, except its flesh was muscle tight and ash grey and its face was bare of features. Two long, thin muscled wings extended from its back.

Once it had examined itself it looked to the congregation before it. Its gaze was stern and convicting. It stopped on a pudgy man sitting in the front row, all eyes fell to the man. He shifted uneasily in his seat, "what, what? Stop looking at me!" He called to the creature.

An unearthly hollow sound boomed from where the creature stood, "you are guilty, you shall be punished."

"I did nothing wrong? I am a religious man, I swear! I go to church, I donate to Palus. I am a man of our god! I have done nothing." The creature seemed to float as it moved across the interveining space between it and the accused.

"I am The Judge and you have been found guilty. Repent." The creature stood before him, the man cowered - he begna to whimper and beg for mercy. "Only those who repent are granted the gift of mercy. Repent."

The mans sobs stopped and he spoke in a low whimper, "alright.. I did it... I did it to her..." The Judge stared blankly as the man spoke, it's absent gaze locked onto his crumpled form "She was only five... But I did it anyway, and I'm sorry - I didn't think, I didn't mean... I'm sorry." The man climbed to his knees and bowed his head before the creature, "I repent."

The creature reached out with a clawed hand and touched the back of the mans head, "You killed her, the only justice of taking ones life is to have ones life taken." And The Judge moved its claw slowly across the mans juglar and his kneeling form collapsed forward. The creature stepped backwards, it looked to be in pain. It's flesh was melting away, the wings began to turn to a tar-like substance and beneath the blank ash face was that of a solemn presit of Palus.

Larcius collasped, sprawling in the pool of the sinners blood.

Somewhere in the crowd a man wearing a black wide brimmed hat placed a hand on a young womans shoulder, "The world is changing, for the better."

Claudia was out working in front of little Kayla's house. She had wanted tulips under her window. She was hard at work today. Dirt covered her blue jeans and her black tank top also had dirt on it. Her hair was up in a bun and she wore gloves on her hands. She wiped her forehead with the back of her hand, making dirt smear across it. Claudia just smiled and continued with her work. She spotted Felix and she smiled at him as he passed by. The female continued with her work.

Veda gripped the reins attached to the bridle on her gray and white Thoroughbred. She could feel the wind whipping through her curly dark locks of hair and saw a small village on the horizon. She had been following a wide river upstream in hopes of reaching the next village in the lands. She had but a couple outdated maps with her, but she always trusted her instinct to bring her to civilization. She hadn't been wrong yet.

She hoped this village that she was nearing could use some of her potions and salves; business had been down lately because her old horse had fallen ill and perished. That had prevented her from traveling and selling her goods to nearby towns because she was adamant that she must pick out the perfect animal to be her transportation. It had taken her nearly a month to find this horse, and she was glad she had waited out that time, whatever financial troubles it cost her. She could tell this was a sturdy horse and would last her a long time. She always liked to bond with the animals she rode day and night with. She wanted a trustworthy horse because her lifestyle depended on it. Luckily another traveling merchant and brought a caravan with him and she pleaded to have this horse. With a little bribery he had sold it to her, and she knew this was the perfect horse for her. She could tell the moment she looked into the animal's eyes. They were strong and passionate, but kind an obedient and the same time.

The young woman eased her horse, named Saffron, to a quick trot as she neared the village. She watched as children ran around in the dirt, playing tag and fighting in play-battles. She inclined her head towards a woman who was working in the front gardens of a house and gave her a small smile. The tulips she were planting were a gorgeous maroon color. Veda brought her horse to a halt in front off the garden and swung herself of the noble animal, her green cloak floating around her thin frame.

"May I inquire as to what village I've come upon?" She asked in a gentle voice to the the gardener, a sweet smile on her face, although the woman could hardly make out her features for the hood of her cloak shrouded her face in the shadows.

"It's terrible the things people do to each other." A thin, pale skinned woman whose hair was white like the snow and eyes the colour of leaves in autumn, "did you hear about that priest, Larcius?"

Her companion, who was slightly shorter, a little rounder and carried a great yellow-blonde mane of curly hair shook her head in disagreement, "I heard what Larcius did to that poor man. Took out a sword and beheaded him as the concluding rites to the Palus ceremony - I knew those sun god worshipers were a bunch of wack-jobs."

"No even close to true, my niece was there." The white haired woman stopped walking and sat down on a bench along the side of the cobblestone street, her companion joined her and the conversation resumed, "He turned into a muscly monster with great wings and claws that called itself The Judge. The creature then accused the man of sinning and demanded repentance. The man confessed and the creature slit his throat, spilling his blood on the base of the alter, then the creature turned back into Larcius. It took the crowd a few moments to get a hold of themselves, it started with a friend of the sinner. They mobbed the unconscious priest and tore him limb from limb. As if death wasn't enough they took his head and pierced it over the spear of the statue of Palus in the temple courtyard."

The other woman looked repulsed, "That's disgusting. What are people coming to these days, evil creatures and ruthless mobs. We're in for some rocky weather."

There was a unanimous nod of agreement before they both rose from their seats, "Well" they said at once, "It is time I departed." Again, in unison, "Take care, see you next moon." And they walked in opposite directions, neither of which lead to where they were going. The shorter woman reached into her pocket and removed a small satchel that was heavy with coins. The other placed a hand in her pocket to confirm the presence of a small vial containing a bluish-grey liquid that would give her leave of this mundane world for the next two days.

Elsewhere, on the fringes of the town a man cloaked in black stood watching a woman dismount her horse and inquire form another woman the name of the town in which she had reached. The fates were spinning their threads and all was coming together, the man thought to himself as he strode towards the pair.

Claudia looked up at the woman who had rode up. "This is Moon River Miss." She said as she stood up. Her gloved fingers wiped the dirt off of her outfit. Golden hues noticed the woman's features could not be seen. "Whats brought you this way?" Claudia asked. Very carefully, she took the gloves off of her hands. Slender fingers were revealed. The fingers themselves were covered in small cuts and her palms had small calluses on them.

She noticed someone walking their way. Claudia ignored this as she waited for the woman to answer her question. Not many people came to Moon River for no real reason at all.

Veda smiled. She had heard of Moon River before, yet she had never traveled this far north since she began her own wandering shop. She didn't know much of the history of this place, but she always enjoyed learning tidbits about the areas to which she ventured. It was a nice exchange as well as receiving payment for her herbs and potions. She always loved to learn about the towns and villages around her.

"Moon River. I've heard of it before," she reached up to her wool hood and pulled it off, revealing her pale skin with some freckles on her nose and cheeks, and eyes that were such a clear blue that they were almost white. Her dark curls of brown hair framed her face nicely. She noted that the woman's hands were worn from hard work in the gardens. She gave a sweet smile to the woman.

"I sell herbs and remedies throughout this area. If you are interested, I can show you what I have. Oh, forgive me. My name is Veda." She inclined her head a bit, a sign of recognition to the woman. She would never curtsy to another woman of middle-class status; formal greetings were reserved for high priestesses and the more noble witches in her hometown, Saithael. She gave proper respect to those priests and higher individuals of other religions of course, even if she did not believe in their Gods. She had been brought up to acknowledge that every creature and plant has a spirit of it's own and there were multiple gods that governed over them. The one and only Goddess herself reigned over humans and showed them through their destined paths; not a God. Not to Palus. In her religion, woman were not the weaker gender, as many other religions taught. The Goddess was a higher being than any other God, for she is the Mother of All.

Claudia smiled at Veda. "Claudia. What do you have for sell?" If the woman had any good herbs, she might have to buy a few and see if she could grown them here in Moon River. She was all about finding new plant life to bring to this place. Sometimes it seemed so drab and empty. Now that rumors of what had happened with the priest had spread, most stayed indoors. This place just seemed to be loosing its light. Claudia was trying to restore a bit of happiness through her flowers.

[...These are so short...it bugs me.]

The black clad figure was now standing across the street from the two women. They seemed to either not notice him or didn't care to glance in his direction. It was no worry to him, for he was used to being unnoticed. They were discussing flowers and herbs - or at least beginning to. One was an outsider, the other native. They were both kind at heart, or at least kind on the surface of their heart. No one but oneself had any inclination of the darkness within, the most any can know is the surface. Legion existed to change that simple fact of life. His sole purpose was to reveal the darkness within the hearts of the sane, and reveal the light within the minds of the mad.

He slowly began to walk towards the pair again, his movements were so fluid that he appeared to float across the ground, his cloak swishing neatly in the air around him. His hands were buried in the pockets at his hips and his wide brimmed hat tilted forward so to cast a shadow over his face, obscuring his features. As he drew near the air took on a slight chill, noticeable only by the myriad of tiny hairs on ones back that stand suddenly and uncontrollably on end when the man was near.

"Hello." His voice severed the air like a guillotine severs heads, "I'm new here, can either of you direct me to where I may find the local temples?"

A short pudgy woman with a satchel of gold coins stepped into a decrepit warehouse with questionable intentions. Sitting in the lotus position in the solitary beam of light cast from a hole in the ceiling was a hooded figure dressed in white.

"I have the earnings my liege." She tossed the satchel onto the floor just beyond the glowing aura. She knelt on one knee and bowed her head before the man.

"What's the word on the street about the priest?" The man's voice was soft yet fearsome.

"Larcius was his name, devout to Palus. Expectation was for him to become the next High Cleric. He's been excommunicated by the church. His head still hangs atop the statute's spear as a reminder against the dark arts. There is no reason to believe that anyone knew of our infiltration into the temple, and with Larcius dead - the only one who had any reason for suspicion has been removed. The general public is nervous, Palus has the strongest religious following in this city - the rule with an Iron fist holding key positions in all levels of the social structure. We must strike quickly before the stabilize their control."

"We will strike when it is in the will of the Mother. For now I want you to investigate Larcius. I sense something is amiss."

The woman stood slowly and bowed before leaving without another word.

On the other side of the village, a woman sat down at a bakery with a small vial in her hand. Placing an order for a pastry she raised the vial to her lips and drank back the liquid. When her pastry arrived she was slumped over in her seat, cold and stiff.

The young woman smiled. "Well, I have an array of remedies for all sorts of ailments, but I can see you are looking for something of which to put to use in your garden. I have an assortment of seeds with me," She turned to the saddlebags on her horse and was startled when a man clad in all black wearing a hat with a rim that hung over his face said something to her.

"Hello. I'm new here, can either of you direct me to where I may find the local temples?"

She looked up and felt a slight chill run down the length of her back. She looked at him with pale eyes, trying to make out his features but his entire face was in shadow. Veda did not let her voice waver though.

"I'm just passing through myself, but I'm sure this nice woman, Claudia is her name, would be able to tell you." She nodded her head to the dark-haired female who had been working in the dirt. Veda the man in her vision, but proceeded to take out small satchels of herbs from the leather pouch strung on her gray horse, that was waiting patiently for her. She patted his flank and turned back to Claudia, keeping note of the ominous presence beside her.

"I have coriander seeds, dill seeds, elderberry seeds, eye of newt, which are more commonly known as mustard seeds, as well as dried basil, thyme, fennel...I have pretty much everything." She shrugged and smiled at the woman, but glanced back at the man once or twice, still curious about his strange, dark energy.
