Templar scaled the humvees hood and kneeled. He was watching for any uncalled for movement. He was waiting for the rumble of an engine.
Several of the shuffling people looked over at the pair and started in their direction.

"How are we doing down there?" He called through the hatch.

Aari was sitting in the driver's seat of the humvee, keys in the ignition waiting for Templar to tell her to start it up and go. She looked around the area, dead bodies on the ground, blood splatters everywhere. She cringed at the sight. It's one thing to do body modifications...but to see guts and blood from death?

Aari saw in the distance a group of people walking slowly towards their way. She got out of the humvee and knelt down next to Templar.

"Um...there's some people coming..." She said worried, looking back. "I don't think they're...normal. They're walking really sluggish." She explained, tugging on his arm.

Templar clambered down off the humvees top.

"I see them...just get the hummer started and back out, slowly. I'll get inside when you get clear of the parking spot."

He had the shotgun half drawn, aimed at the ground. His trigger finger was wrapped around the outside of the firing mechanism so that way he wouldn't accidently hit a hair trigger. The group of "people," numbering in the dozens, started to sprint at the pair from the other side of the intersection nearly two hundred feet away. Their bloodied screams punctured the night.

Templar cussed out loud. They were spotted. He opened up on the group with the 12 gauge, not even caring that that they were really far away or that there was a machine gun turret on top of the humvee. Even that he had other guns on him didn't seem to matter that much. His feet carried him away from the vehicle and out into the street, drawing their attention away from the humvee. He only hoped the woman would get the vehicle moving.

Aari nodded as he directed her. She stood and slid back into the humvee, turning the key and allowing the car to rumble to life. She watched as he stood, firing shots at the oncoming crowd, impailing them with the speeding bullets. She cringed as the screams sent shivers down her spine. She floared the vehicle on accident, but spun it around and drove up next to Templar.

"Get in!" She yelled, opening the passenger door.

Templar threw the empty shotgun through the door, landing on the other passenger seat. He dove into the humvee and closed the door behind him. Manuevering further, he crawled forward and stood up in the hatch space. The machine gun was still there.

His hand slid over a shaft stick out of the side and pulled back. A round ejected out the side and the machine gun accepted the belt fed ammo box next to it. He released the shaft and it slid back with force. It was ready to shoot.

He ducked back down under the hatch and spoke quickly.

"Get us out of here, head west!" He pointed at the small dashboard compass. Then he stood back up, grabbing hold of the machine gun once more.

He pulled the trigger and rounds sped off with aggression into the charging crowd...

Aari didn't even bother to put her seatbelt on as she floured it heading West, judging her direction by the compass. She squeezed the steering wheel as she ran over several of the already dead bodies and more of the oncoming...'people'. She was on the road away from the center area of the city. She yelled out as she spoke, not sure if he could hear her.

"Have you talked to anyone outside the city?" She asked, looking around the vehicle.

Templar couldn't hear of the thunder of the machine gun going off in bursts. It was like that for several seconds after they started moving, occasionally running over bodies. They were quickly outpacing the horde.

His fingers came off the trigger. There was no reason to fire now and they may need the bullets. With that he ducked under the hatch and slid into the passenger seat in time to hear Aari's question.

"Getting to that." He said, now that the noise of the gun stopped. He bent over in the seat and grabbed a small box. It was a satellite phone that looked like it had been through several era's of war. He grabbed the phone and put it against his ear.

"Anyone there? This is bravo charlie tango mountain facility security, code 2-8-1-4. Anyone out there?"

...no response followed...

He tried again and once more there was no answer. There were no other gunshots in the town now. All was dead silent except for the screams of the dead.

He threw the phone against the dashboard and cussed again. He didn't know what was going on exactly but it seemed like something out of a horror movie. His hands went down to his M4 and pulled the clip out. There were bullets in it and thats what mattered right now. He slipped it back in and pulled the primer back, then released. The next thing he did was switch the gun to semi-automatic, firing one round for each pull of the trigger.

"So where are we going? We still have most of a full car of gas so we can go pretty far away from here..." He finally asked.

Aari drove in silence...her chest was tight with the anxiety of impending doom. She drew in a slow breath, letting it back out at the same rate. She listened intensly as Templar spoke through the device, receiving no response. She bit her lip...nothing. She cringed as he threw the phone against the dashboard, a shudder running through her body.

"What do you mean where are we going???" She gasped, "I thought you knew!" Her fingers wrapped around the steering wheel tightly, her breathing grew rapid. No, not a panic attack...not now...I'm driving. She thought, clenching her jaw. "I don't know..where..to go...there was no answer..." She mumbled half to herself.

Unaware of speaking his thoughts out loud, Templar peered out of the windshield. The terrain around was intimidating. There were several vehicles that had seen much better days, especially if they were clean of blood.

"Alright, something is REALLY messed up here. We head as far west as possible. When we hit half a tank of gas we should get off at the first exit and find a place for the night. If the hotel is half decent, we should be able to get a hold of a payphone. Whatever the hell this thing is, its spreading faster than wildfire. My team was only there for 30 minutes, top, and it had gotten hold of the whole town."

He looked over at Aari, ready to continue his summary, trying to take in what state the woman was in. She looked in a panic and that told him enough...

"We could pull over and switch, I'll drive if you want. We know that whatever this 'infection' is, its not airborne which means that we can avoid it. Anyone that had direct blood to blood contact changed into that freakish state within minutes..."
