"I'll try to freeze him!" Xelix shouted, trying a varient of his water spell. Indeed, ice flew out, and froze all of the tentacles in place. He then shattered them all with his hand-and-a-half sword. That only left the Worm. It dived underground, then emerged under Xelix. With a yelp, he fell into the worm, and tried to slash his way out. This was certainly unpleasent, he wasn't strong enough to fight his way out. "Try to get the stomeache!" He somehow managed to yell out. He would be killed and kicked out of the game if this continued.

Rook luanched himself from the ground and fell toward the worm. The thing was obviously impervious to nay outer assualt, so why not try inner. He fell faster and faster, holding hid sword so it pointed downwards. He hit one side of the maw, cuaseing the creature to lurch and provide Xelix with the leverage to escape. Rook fell deeper into the creature, letting our a fierce battle cry sound very similar to a roar. Then all was quiet, the creature still stood yet waverd and made no attempt to attack Xelix. It would appear that Rook had died by entering the creature's stomach.

(please note that Rook isnt really dead, I have something special planned just dont kill the worm yet.)

Xelix rolled out of the worm, and put himself into a combat position. Looks like that other guy would have been kicked outta the game. Oh well, he could just get back in. Xelix, on the other hand, had more pressing matters. Like that fact that the tentacles were growing back.

From the creature's gut came the long black blade of Rook's sword as it sliced downward aong the length of the creature. Rook then climbed out of the body just as the worm bellowed in pain and began to fall forward toward Xelix and Rook. Rook simply accelerated to a run and quickly moved out of the worm's way. He was covered in guts yes but he was alive and well. That's all he had to know. A small red light accelerated from the corpse and followed Rook until he turned and took hold of it. It resembled a crystal of some sort. Once Rook had grabbed it a screen appeared in front of him.
"Please choose one of the three rewards." A voice very similar to the tutorial's spoke. Rook saw three icons appeare on the screen. He tapped one that resembled a claw. The screen then disappeared and the crystal shattered and the shards seemed to absorb into Rook's hands. When Rook examined them he saw that they were nor longer covered by gloves but were now scaly and clawed. More fit for combat he assumed. HE contineued to examine his new upgrade.

(Just thouhgt I'd throw a sort of award system in there for the fun of it, I mean it is a video game.)

"Killstealer." Xelix said jokingly, making fun of another game's community. "I do wish there was some sort of consolation prize though..." He said. Just then another option popped up. "Please chose: Get chased by a monster, or fall into a lake." "C'mon! That's not fair! Did you hear that? That's not fair!" Xelix yelled, turning towards Rook. Suddenly, the voice said "Just kidding. You get 100 crystal shards, and some information. If you are looking for any life except monsters, this is the wrong place. No towns have yet been built. We have left all of that stuff to the players, but don't worry. What takes years in real life only takes half and hour here. That is, if you co-operate with other players." With that, the voice faded away. Xelix scratched his chin. "Interesting. Do you think we could actually change this barren place into some sort of sci-fi city or Fantasy Town, anything? This could get interesting."

Leo walked through the door and looked around and paid his money. He followed the instructions given and created his character. He appeared in the virtual world in flowing cloths. The wind seemed to envelope him, as if it were drawn to him. He felt stronger, swifter, though he was still himself. A massive sword materialized as he envisioned it. He picked up the sword and sheathed it across his back after giving it a few test swings. The old man looked at him, "Ah, so your a warrior?"

"Of sorts." Leo smiled as the wind blew once more, "So this is virtual reality? I feel like i'm actually in this world." He saw the other two players after their fight, and sighed scratching the back of his head, "So what can I do?"

"Your a warrior of storms, figure it out." The old man replied with a smile.

"Warrior of... Storms?"

Rook didnt hear the secound part of the option wich had opened before Xelix. He was too busy laughing at the first part. Pesonally he didnt find too much wrong with it since if you were chased by a monster you could kill it and get points for that and if you fell in the lake, who's to say you wouldnt find more monsters or something else of value. He then noticed the third new player. Now this game was starting to get intresting. Rook honestly didnt want to be stuck with the same person constantly following him throughout the game. it would get boring after a while. Rook did hear the part about towns however. Rook saw plenty of dead trees off in the distance, he couldnt helo but wonder if the virtual world reacted to new things in drastic ways. If he built a trading out post would there autmatically be towns and goods to be traded and traveled to? He couldnt helo but find out. He speed off towards the dead forest and began to cut down trees with his sword. he started to make crue shealter such as leantos and huts. He dug out trenches for bathrooms and dug up stones to make walk ways. Soon it was like a nomadic village had sprung up from the ground. Still Rook contineued to work even as more npcs began to materialize to complete the setting. What the other two players did while he was working was of little concern to him he was focusing on developing a world to explore fore once he made an outline the game program would certainly fill in the details.

Default Sarah Covenry Enters the Shop

Walking beside Amy I struggled to keep up with the tiny little Asian girl as she pulled Claudia and I forwards. Amy was incredibly excited and the little spitball seemed to have developed some sort of superhuman strength.

I ran my black fingernails through my blond hair and sighed. I was tired. I'd been walking in high heels for a half hour to get to this place. Maybe if Amy had said something about that I'd have worn more sensible shoes. Claudia, of course, being into volleyball and soccer was fine. Heck, she ran for a half hour each morning before school.

"The 8th Dimension is like nothing else!" she continued, her multi-coloured bangs dancing about her small cherubic face, "it's the world's first simulated environment with a completely integrated sensual interface."

"A what?" I asked, completely lost and putting up with her excitement as best I could. That was, after all, what friends were for.

"She means it's a game," Claudia answered, the athletic girl who ran two miles a day clarified for me, “I think.”

“Not a computer?”

“Well d'uh Sarah,” Amy exclaimed, “can't run a game without a computer.”

“Ever heard of chess, backgammon, Dungeons and Dragons?” I countered continuing to list other board games.

Claudia couldn't help and chimed in with sports, “Soccer, Football, Volleyball?”

Amy just made a big raspberry noise in reply.

We were an odd trio. We'd made friends when we were young. I'd been teasing Amy mercilessly about her braces and pig tails and Claudia nearly broke my arm. To this day I still wonder how someone nearly breaking my arm managed to make us friends.

Amy shoved open the glass door and nearly slammed Claudia and I into the shop window and brick wall on either side in her haste. As it was I damn near twisted my ankle in my high heels and when I got through the door Amy was already bouncing in front of the desk, pressing the buzzer for service again and again until the spectacled shopkeeper emerged.

“May we play the game?” she asked, every word coming out in a rush, “please please please please. I read online that you're beta-ing. I told my friend and we're all really excited and we wanna try it...”

She was still going but I wasn't paying attention to specifics anymore. I just looked at the shop keeper. flushed with embarrassment, shrugged my shoulders and bit my lower lip. The shopkeeper never even got a chance to speak. He just waved us into the back room with strange looking pods, two of which were already in use judging from the red lights atop that made me think of taxi cabs.

“Please,” the bespectacled shopkeep ushered us, “into the pods and put on the glasses.”

Default Sarah Covenry Goes Through Character Creation

The claustrophobic drab grey walls of the pod's interior fell away shrinking back and brightening into featureless brilliant white. I found myself within a large room with two others. Claudia's face sat on a tall statuesque female knight with long black hair tied into a pony tail that reached her waist. Beside her was Amy, wrapped in tight fitting ninja stlye garb and two long fighting knives. They were listening to a voice she could not hear a voice that was speaking to her as well it seemed.

“Welcome to 8th dimension. You're appearance has been scanned into the game, and a suitable avatar has been created just for you. Take a look in this mirror.”

I did so and was stunned. While the others looked great I was staring at a decrepit old crone of a woman in my mirror. Hunched over and clutching a staff for support I was nothing but a ragged bag of bones in a black sack.

“You are a witch,” the voice intoned, “You have sacrificed youth, beauty, and health, everything for power.”

“Oh hell no,” I complained, as Claudia and Amy looked my way and snickered, “computer, game, thingee. I want a different character. Something Elven and pretty!”

“Character Customization enabled,” the voice in my head stated and numerous menus sprang up all about me. I could see displays for Statistics, Powers, Spells, Appearance and Equipment. There was so much to look at. I immediately tapped at the air where it listed appearance and began playing with settings and choosing equipment, changing the way my character appeared.

I was liking my new character. I was beautiful, buxom, wearing only silk panels and brassiere. My hair was done up in elaborate coifs, my makeup was perfect and I simply dripped with jewels. Every coin of my starting money went into jewelery. I turned again and again, admiring my physique and then making small changes until some minutes later Amy latched onto my arm, tugging as she did before. “Come on Sarah!” she cried, “let's go!”

“But I'm not done yet,” I argued, “I'm still making my character.”

“Oh come on! Claudia and I are already done the tutorial.”

“But I...”

“Please! PLEASE!”

“Okay okay...” I agreed, expecting to just push a couple more keys but Amy didn't allow it. She just hauled hard on my arm until my bare feet slid out of the glowing circle of the interface.

I giggled, her enthusiasm infectious. “Okay, okay,” I answered her, “I'm coming.”

Behind me, unnoticed, the interface blinked, “CAUTION: Ability Points not Spent. Powers not Chosen. Skills not Chosen. Spells not Chosen. CAUTION: Unspent points will be lost.”

Default Sarah's First Battle

The Wheel of Time or Sword of Truth this wasn't. I was finding the game lacking on a number of points. There were no towns, no countries, no borders and no politics. Worst of all was the realism. There really wasn't any. Horses seemed to perform more like cadillacs and there didn't seem to be any reason for us to be wandering. At least the grass tickling me between my toes felt astonishingly correct.

“Why are we going down here again?” I asked as I clambored up over a fallen stone column as we moved through some ancient ruins that possibly belonged to some ancient civilization that must have died off milennia before.

“To kill stuff and loot the bodies,” Claudia replied plainly as she spun her sword about.

“To earn experience points and gain levels!” Amy added.

They had stopped before what was a convenient staircase leading down into the earth. I followed, coming up behind Claudia, taking cover in case anything jumped out.

I rose up on the tips of my toes and peered down into the depths of the stairwell leading downwards into darkness and shivered. I never was very fond of dark places. “I mean, wherer is the role playing? why are we here? How long have we known each other? Are we mercenaries? The people who built these ruins, who where they and what happened to them?

“Who cares...” Claudia answered, glowering and impatient as she lit her lantern simply by flipping a switch. So much for realism I noted. “So long as we get to kill stuff.”

“But what about us?” I asked.

“Okay fine. I just met you earlier today. You're soft and weak and I hate your guts. Let's go kill something already,” Claudia said with a wicked grin and then didn't just start down the steps she charged down them with her lantern held up high and her shield on her back.

Amy laughed and shook her head and stuck out her tongue as she often did. “It's a game silly! Don't take it so seriously.” Then she too raced down into the darkness leaving me completely alone.

“Ah hell,” I muttered and followed them as the sounds of combat drifted upwards.

The stone was cold beneath my fingertips as I hugged the wall and I stepped off the bottom most step into a world of chaos. There were torches ensconced in the walls and colours danced black, gold, red and amber on every surface. Claudia's sword appeared as if on fire as it hewed into another goblin and trailed blood and ichor on the back swing. I was amazed. Claudia was really getting into it but then she'd always been very physical. Amy was darting about faster then I could follow, a slash here, a stab there, back and forth, never in one place long enough for anyone to land a blow upon her. First she wounded and incapacitated then she finished them with elegance.

I carefully stepped over a goblin, and into the room, marvelling as Amy stabbed one goblin in the back right side kidney which left him open to a horrible slash from Claudia that opened his entire torso. The dance was breathtaking.

“Don't just stand there,” Amy called back, “cast a spell!”

I thought it a great idea, only I wasn't sure how. I hadn't gone through the tutorial. I didn't know I had no spells, no skills. I raised my bejeweled hands, waved them about, but nothing happened. I must have looked incredibly stupid.

“Come on Sarah,” Claudia shouted, “cast som- LOOK OUT!”

Amy ducked. I didn't. Everything slowed down as I watched Amy drop down and like a curtain being drawn open the goblin archer with bow drawn came into view. He released and I heard a “twang” before feeling a sudden pain in my chest. Peering down I spied the feathered shaft sticking out from between my breasts and gaped stupidly at it. I took a step backwards and tried to say something but couldn't. My vision was going red around the edges. I took another stop and my heel caught on something, the goblin I'd just stepped over. I tripped, falling hard and flat on the cold stone with my feet propped up on his corpse.
