Default Wings of Darkness IC

The city of Valeacre was as much as Syel remembered it, the elves lived with nature, and as such their homes were built in thr trees, no brick or stone buildings stood as a home, the only non elf made buildings were the smithy which belonged to an ill tempered but talented Dwarf and the temple of the Oracles.

Syel did not wish to intrude on his parents, after his self imposed exile nearly forty years ago the elf did not wish to have them fawning over him, he considered himself grown up amongst the younger elves, but to the elders he would still be considered a child, his one and only stop would be the Temple.

The huge crystalline structure caught and held the sun's rays, it was a beautiful sight to behold and Syel was not ashamed to walk up the steps with tears fresh on his cheeks, there were two guards outside the door, but they were only for show, no elf was ever turned away, both elves stood at rigid attention as Syel approached, neither made a move to talk to him so he continued on his way into the huge building.

The inside was just as magnificent in its design, many different statues, paintings and other eleven art were proudly displayed, each piece showed the history of the long lived race in some shape or form, Syel found himself weeping again as he saw the tapestry of the elf wars, the twin brothers that were torn apart as well as most of the elven kingdom, then there was the Dragon purge, where most of the elves that lived in Valeacre had lost many of their kin to the ever hungry beasts, Syel didnt notice his approach had been monitored, but he turned sharply at a small cough that interrupted his reverie.

"I apologise for startling you youngling, but if I had not then you would be lost amongst the art for a long time, and I sense an urgency about you, perhaps I am mistaken"

Syel saw the elder elf and almost gasped out loud, elves did not age as quickly as their years belied, but this elf was ancient, even time had touched her face, but it was not the wrinkled bark like skin that had made Syel almost forget his manners, it was her eyes, both were milky white and held no pupil, this was the fabled oracle, and Syel could see that she was blind.

"I am sorry for my lack of ettiquette milady, I have recently returned to the city and have not been used to being around people, even my own kind in almost forty years, I do however have need of consulting you, and you were right in speaking of an urgency to my being here"

The oracle stood as still as one of the marble statues next to which she was standing, her sightless eyes not betraying her face but she could tell that Syel was not speaking the truth, at least not all of it.

"Come young one, I do not need to give you my name, Oracle seems fine, and your name is already known to me Syel Vinterbloom, chosen of Mileka"

Syel stood frozen in shock, he didnt know what to make of this new turn of events, but he should have learnt by now, that when the Gods were involved, nothing was unusual.

Saren let the heavy pub door swing shut behind her, slamming into it's frame as she walked towards the bar. Already the pub was getting busy, with several groups of men hanging about in the damp corners of the room. ''It's about time.'' An old man said throatily, sitting at the bar. Saren recognized him as one of her regulars. Strapping on an old and woren down apron, Saren stepped behind the bar and smiled.

''Morning Jef. The regular?''
''Aye.'' The old man replied.
Saren poured out the man's drink from the kitchen and handed it to him. After that, the rest of the men in the pub gathered around the bar and collected their drinks. For half an hour, Saren was busy pouring out drinks and cooking up breakfasts for the men before the majority of them left for work, leaving only the depressed lay-abouts, the old and homeless.

Saren slumped down onto a chair by the bar, crossing her arms and staring ahead blankly in thought. Even when she was busy, she could never stop thinking about that.. vision. It just seemed so real. The memory of it was so real that it was almost tangible. She could remember the event so well that it was almost like a part of her was still living it when she thought about it.

The tree is still out there. On that hill. It's waiting for me. Saren thought. The reason I was sad in the first place was because this is the end of my life-- working in this stupid bar. My gravestone would say 'Here lies Saren Bradahair. She worked hard'. I still don't want that. I still don't want to be bored and unhappy, and then after I die be forgotten after a few years!

And my solution came to me on the wings of an angel. It offered me salvation. Why am I being so stupid? I need to go there. I have to go to that meeting. Who cares why she called me a 'hero', or who I have to save. It's better than sticking around here! I'd rather fight a few thieves than die alone and forgotten. She thought, shuffling a little on the stool she sat on. She noticed some men in the pub were noticing her statue-like, blank appearance. She forced a smile, though she wasn't sure if it even showed.

''When you return from your vision, you will have your gift. One gift to help you in your destiny, whatever it might be. You have the gift to change what is. Use it wisely. I will see you soon.'' The voice from the memory echoed in her mind. The voice of the Goddess of Destiny.

Hmm.. Saren thought in wonder. Did she really have some sort of a 'magical' gift? Time to test it out..

You are ready, It's time for you to pursue the path to mastering your element. Said the mage instructor.

Understood, instructor.

The Instructors of the Mage's Society teach that power and mastering your element was the key to success. But Iffy Lambra was thinking beyond that. Each element has a mage with a title that labels them as the strongest mage of that element. The 'Fire Prophet', was all Iffy could think of when thinking of mastering her element of fire. The Mage's Society is in the center of the great floating city of Yesdal, which is the capital of Manasil. Manasil is a country ruled by a tyrant by the name of Kenji Bane. Also just happens to be the Fire Prophet.

Iffy sleeps one last night in the Mage's Society before her departure. She thought she had her goals straight, until that nightmare came again.

Ugh, not this miserable place again. Iffy says to herself as she looks over the destroyed life around her. But this time, that voive came clearer and appeared a wispful face.

You are chosen. Please help us, we are the world. Before it's too late. You must not turn away from your fate. Find me.....Tree of Destiny.

Iffy wakes up roughly.

I guess I have some things to figure out, defeating the fire prophet is important, but this dream is too overwhelming. Psh, nothing I can't handle ofcourse. Just need to find out what this 'Tree of Destiny' is...

Vaghn awoke. He was sitting, slumped against a large, dying tree. Opening his eyes, a wave of brief amnesia came over him. After a moment the memories came flooding back to him. "Still in the woods." he whispered to himself.
Picking himself off the ground, Vaghn started to get his supplies and get ready to start traveling again when he realized that he was missing his role of blade wire. "Damn it! Thats the third time I have lost it. I'm not paying for another one...arghhh...Where is it!" Vaghn exclaimed as he rummaged through the leaf pile that he had used as a cushion to sleep on the previous night.
"Hehehehe, You do this all the time Vaghn." A small, yet non-the-less lethal voice chimed. Vaghn kept looking for his wire roll. "Oh, shut up Iza. Your not a help at all."
"Well I could be...if you would only ask kindly." The voice spoke again. Vaghn stopped his searching and stood erect. Holding out an open palm, he spoke: "Can you please be so kind as to reveal to me the location of my lost blade wire roll?," A moments pause. "...arghh- Oh Great and Wonderous One!?" As Vaghn annoyingly spoke the last sentence, a blue butterfly, glowing with a strange aura, flitted from seemingly nowhere to alight on Vaghns open hand. As it landed it immediately changed forms; morphing from a small insect to a slightly larger humanoid form which included hands, feet, and a head, but no face. It was mostly a liquid black in color with glowing blue words and symbols scrolling across its surface. It looked up towards Vaghn. "Now that's more like it. You should speak like that all the time; makes things easier."
"Just tell me where my damn roll is" Vaghn said in a bored tone.
"Of course, of course...You don't have to get iffy about it. Your "damned' roll is located in your left inside coat pocket, where you had placed it yesterday night before you went to sleep."
"Oh...um, thanks."
"umm humm...dont mention it."

After another couple of minutes, in which Vaghn erased most traces of his previous nights stay, the two walked off- deeper into the woods...
(I know this sucks terribly, and I know I didn't give much of an introduction...but I'll do better next time. Right now I'm kinda tired and I just wanted to hurry and put up a quick post.)

Saren stepped up from her stool, staring around the dark, damp room. Some of the men sitting with glasses of ale glanced at her and resumed their conversations.
But how does it even work, this power of mine? Saren thought suspiciously. She walked into the back room, a small and cluttered room that they called the kitchen.

Saren glanced around the room full of barrels of all sorts of drinks and crates of some moulding fruit. There was a basin of dirty water in the corner for cleaning the glasses too.
''Hmm..'' Saren walked over to a create of food that they'd have to serve very soon or throw out. She reached in and grabbed a moudling apple, looking at it's skin which looked as wrinkled as an old womans.

Holding it out in her open palm, Saren wondered what she could make it do.
An idea suddenly hitting her, Saren focused on the apple. ''Alakazam!'' She whispered.
Nothing.
''Huh.. TurnIntoANewApple!''

Nothing.
''Calabrahkanastaina!'' She said randomly.
Nothing.

What a stupid power if I can't even get it to work. Why can't the apple just turn into a new, shiny, red apple? Saren thought in annoyance. Then, all of a sudden, a purple glow eminated from the apple.

As the glow faded, a gleaming, healthy red apple had appeared in her hand. The other apple was nowhere to be seen.
Saren's jaw dropped open. ''You've got to be bloody kidding me.'' She mumbled, poking the apple hesitantly.
Saren walked over to the counter, grabbing a knife and running it through the apple, slicing it up. Saren picked up a piece and stared at it for a moment, putting the piece of apple in her mouth. She slowly chewed it, analyzing the taste before swallowing it.
It tasted fantastic!

A huge grin grew across Saren's face and she looked around the kitchen for something else to test out her power on.
''But what do I want? What do I want?'' Saren asked out loud. Of course. She thought as an idea hit her over the head like a hammer. ''Money.'' She whispered.
Saren walked across to the crate, picking up another rotting apple and dropping it into an ale glass. Focusing on what she wanted, Saren stared at the rotten apple as it dropped into the glass. Golden coins. Gleaming, new golden coins. Saren thought. All of a sudden, the sliced up pieces of apples morphed and moulded into golden coins in the blink of an eye.
The coins clanged as they hit the bottom of the dirty glass, lying over each other in a pile. An almost seductive sight to Saren.

''Heh..''
Saren stammered under her breath. ''Real money.. Actual money.'' She stammered in shock. She reached into the glass with a slender hand, cupping a handful of coins and dropping them back into the glass loudly.

Syel followed the Oracle into a smaller but still magnificently decorated chamber, he was not suprised to see a babbling brook and a couple of small ponds inside the building, the elves loved and cherished nature and all her gifts, so it was only fitting to have invited those gifts into their buildings.

"Please be seated Syel you wish to speak to me about a white tree and an approaching darkness, am I right?"

The oracle knew she was correct when she heard the slight intake of breath, keeping her face void of a smile she made her way to her own seat, her sightless eyes seeing far more that those that could see.

Syel sat down in chair that had been fashioned out of oak, by fashioned the elves had coaxed the tree into growing in that shape, it would not do to be barbaric and cut the wood then build something out of the pieces, but the comfort was still the same, it would keep Syel alert and would not allow him to settle, it seemed that the Oracle knew more than Syel did, but then again that was the purpose of his visit.

"I see that my visit here was not in vain Milady, you seem to know more about this tree than I, would you be som kind as to share your information with me, it seems that Mileka wanted me to come her to ask you after all"

Syel sat and waited for the Oracle to speak, he tried to keep his gaze away from her pupil-less orbs but he couldnt help drawn to them.

The shadows stirred, things of unspeakable evil and nightmarish origins huddled together as their master approached, even the mightiest of these creatures bent their heads in homage to the one amongst them they accepted as the leader.

Balfor was not in a good mood, so far the killing and destruction had sated his appetite, but he had seen the hand of Mileka at work before and knew his meddlesome sister was trying to stop his fun once again, there was already signs of the prophecy beginning, Balfor could not allow this, he wanted to rule this world, even it was a world filled with nothing but smoking remains and oceans of blood.

"Send out the shadow-wights and the Banelings I want this prophecy abated before it can truly begin, there will be someone, or several someones on their way to a tree, this tree is called by many the tree of Destiny, pah, like these foolish races have such a thing, I want it uprooted and destroyed, burned and the very ground it was rooted in desecrated, preferably with the ones I foresee being there's blood"

Several patches of darkness flickered for an instant, then becoming somewhat substatial fleww up into the night sky, wolf like creatures with glowing red eyes ran from the shadows next, their howls sending shivers of terror up the most stalwart person's spine, the blight of Balfor had begun their hunt.

Sovure set down his guitar for the night. He looked around and saw that the few patrons still there were still staring at the stage, as if waiting for more. He knew that was the case, but the management had paid him for two hours and he'd played six. That was more than enough for one night without tips, even when it was all country. He yawned and stretched back a bit.

The nightmares had stopped, hopefully for good, but that unfortunately did not help explain any of it. The panther had given him something, something important, along with a tantalizing hint. What exactly the jewel was, though, he did not know. And he wasn't completely sure what the other six people were for, though if he had to guess he'd say they'd had similar dreams and had also gotten a gift.

Sovure sat down at the bar, pulled out a whetstone, extended his hidden blades and began sharpening them. He smiled at the gleam they possessed, and was glad they hadn't needed to work for a while now anyway but were always prepared.

"You're good, kid." The bartender said at last.

"I'm probably twenty years older than you." Sovure pointed out, not unkindly.

"Yeah but you look and act like a kid. A kid who plays too good to be stuck in some dump like this."

Sovure sighed and set down his arm. He looked at the bartender. The man had short brown hair and a black handlebar mustache. His skin was pretty pale, as if he had rarely seen sunlight, and to put it kindly, the man was large. Sovure never caught his name.

"That's why i play here." Sovure replied, looking back down at his blade. "I don't expect anyone to understand."

"Not surprising. It's a pretty stupid reason."

"Shut up, i bring in half your customers."

"And send another half out crying."

"Three people. And she WAS a bitch." Sovure pointed out, sliding off the barstool and making his way upstairs. "I'm gonna get some sleep. Tha-"

"Stop thanking me for it, I've been boarding ya for a year and a half."

Sovure laughed. "I was going to say that was a long night. But yeah, thanks too. And are you ever going to tell-"

"No, i'm not. Get over it."

"Fine. I ain't tellin ya mine either, stubborn old man."

"I'm younger than you."

"Sure don't look it. Or act it." He laughed as he shut the door to his room and laid down. He yawned as exhaustion finally overtook him, and fell down to his bed, eyes shutting...

And yelled out as he landed on the floor of the neighbor's house.

He groaned and pulled himself up, rubbing his forehead. "What... the hell?"

Finally ready to leave Yesal, and is expected to find her own way. Iffy realizes that she's never been anywhere else, therefore she asks one of the long aged intructors for directions to the nearest town.

Yeah, so just follow these directions and that'll put me in the town of New Sagen. It's a very prosperous town that is open to all, unlike Old Sagen south of it. It would be wise not to go there as they do not treat those with magic kindly. New Sagen is a good start.

New Sagen huh. And if I want to go to Old Sagen then I'll go there, I could care less what they do and do not like. It's not like they can stop me.

Just be careful child, do not let your confidence blind you.

Yea yea, farewell.

Iffy walks on to a lift powered by the magic core of the city and floats her down to the ground.

Alright world, show me what you got! Iffy says with a big smile

Saren dropped the pile of clothes onto her bed. She lived in a tiny house that wasn't big enough to be called a cottage but not small enough to be called a shed. ''Eugh. Too many clothes. I should have gotten someone to carry them in for me..'' Saren muttered to herself, although there was no real disappointment. The bubbling excitement at recieving her new power hadn't left her since that morning at the pub. After quitting her job, Saren had gone to the most expensive clothes shops in town she could find-- which, given the town, weren't that expensive clothes or of the best quality-- and bought all that she saw. No more strung together rags for Saren! She had proper, good clothes now.

Though as she dropped the clothes from her arm onto her bed, she heard a loud howling noise. If she didn't know any better, it was just outside of her house. Suddenly, more howling noises joined in with the first one. Then snarls and barking. The noises grew louder and louder, making Saren back away towards her bed.

She realized that the sounds were coming from above her, and her head cocked up towards the ceiling. What the hell? Flying wolves?
As the sounds all but penetrated the ceiling, Saren glanced at the dresses on the bed and mimed a ''Sorry.'' as she burst towards the front door.
She rammed into the door and pulled the handle at the same time, sending it flying open. Like a hare, Saren dashed out into the night towards the town. She was not 'gunna run into the forest. If anything, she was gunna' find some help!

Still running towards the town centre and passing a couple of cottages, Saren looked over her shoulder. The outline of some massive creatures, far bigger than wolves-- the size of horses-- with massive red, glowing eyes could be seen not far behind her.
As they curved around Saren's house, one of the creatures breathed fire over the house and ignited it, then they flew quickly after Saren.
''Fire breathing horse sized wolves?'' Saren gasped, short of breath. She really was unfit. ''You've got to be bleeding kidding me.''
