Default Against all odds: The final Chapter

Fighting you see, is all I ever known...
The taste of metal... of blood... It’s all the same...
My father once told me... Power doesn't have a master, only servants...
When I found my brother that day... I believed it...
This power had consumed my brother...killed my wife and daughter...
And yet... I could not hate it. To the contrary...
I grew to depend on it, as my brother had…
We were partners now, this power and I...
It had the power to consume me...In order to keep myself alive...
I had to use it...
A truce, if you will...
It would take my life too, someday...
As forfeit for the protection and reputation it has given me...
It was only a matter of time.
...
My only regret...
Is that I would leave her alone...
Because of her...
I fear the power.

Aerandir stood silently in his room, looking at his family’s armor that had been resting for a hundred years untouched. He pulled on a blue silk tunic over his bare skin, then reached for a black cotton tunic and pulled it over the silk one.

He then lifted the chain mail tunic and slipped it over his head. The chain mail reached his knees but was cut in the middle so he could move more freely. He then began to pull on the highly polished grieves that were lighter than a feather. It took him a few minutes to tighten the leather straps correctly, for it had been a while since he used them. He then reached for the breast plate and slipped his arms through the holes…

He finished strapping the Breastplate; he then reached for the shoulder guards and took his time putting them on.

He then reached for his leather gauntlets and pulled them on gently. He looked down at his left arm and flexed his fingers.

Aerandir clenched his fist and closed his eyes. He didn’t move for about a moment. But he then continued to strap on the Silver metal gauntlet on his right arm.
Once done, he reached over for a different gauntlet that did not go with his armor. It was gold; he had used it for the past hundred years. It was the only armor that he normally wore day in and out.

He tightened the leather straps on it and then rubbed his hands together. He looked down at the sword lying on his bed, his father’s sword…the Arbitrator. He picked it up slowly and tied it to the belt that was wrapped at his waist.

He closed his eyes once again as he finished, taking in a long deep breath. He turned and walked out of his room and into the hallway of the Elladan castle. Soldiers were running around preparing for the up coming battle. There were only about sixty men in the castle, the rest his army and the Elladan’s army were lying in wait a day’s journey from here. The two forces together were 5,000 strong, against an army of 10,000 and also an un-known amount of dragons. The odds were against them everyone knew it.

This was truly the battle against life and death. If they failed…Acharon would surely destroy the world. But it was lose/lose battle for Aerandir. If he were to be killed he would never see her again…if he won, he would have killed his only brother…

Aerandir tried to remember how he got himself here… ever since the night his life was changed forever…up to the war against Haltia, the years he spent alone trying to find the ancient dragon. And how he met… her… the only woman besides his wife that gave him peace… He remembered how he met her like it was yesterday…

Alright, here is the OOC thread for Against all odds: The Final Chapter. OOC~ Against all odds: The final Chapter
History:

It has been Fifty years since the war between the Empire of Haltia and the Alliance. Kingdoms that the Empire had taken over were reestablished to their original state. But the Empire of Haltia's original boarders were cut in half.

The beloved Emperor Aaron disappeared after the siege on the Capital city Arcada. Aerandir lost more than one loved one that day as well, but he also found out the truth to his brothers whereabouts...

Aerandir disappeared again, he returned to see Leah and Damien a few times every year. He also trained a new Dragonare… but that was a few years after the war. Aerandir returned to his old ways and started hunting dragons on his own. That is, until he ran into an ambassador and her body guard…

Aerandir Amandil stood silently next to his horse, looking up to the old tavern in a small village called Seton on the east coast of Servia. He glanced at the tavern’s fading name “The Sea Side Shack” Aerandir shook his head; it was a truly fitting name for the tavern. The Sea was less than fifty yards away and the building it self was practically a shack. The planks on the walls were falling off, with random pieces of wood that were used to cover up the holes in the wall. The roof was in even worst condition, it was practically a shack and tent all in one. Large pieces of hide was stretched and placed over unanticipated sunroofs, and by the looks of it there were a couple of them. He tied the reins to the saddle horn before letting Draco roam freely. For it was a very small chance that anyone would be able to steal him or for the horse to roam to far.

He slowly walked up the old wooden steps, the wood did not screech loudly like it would normally do for someone his size. He pushed the door open with his right palm, and walked in to the darken room. Rusty old oil lamps lit the small L-shaped tavern room, and from what he could tell, the entire village was inside. When people noticed his entrance, word quickly spread a crossed the room until everyone was silent and watching him. Then a very large man, who seemed to be formidable in human standards stood up and placed his hand on a very old a brittle looking long sword. He then called out to Aerandir “Who are you and what business do you have in this small village?”

Aerandir raised an eyebrow, but it could not be seen from under the darkness of his hood. “I came because there was a report of a Dragon nearby…” His voice grew cold, “Unless that was a lie…”

The man’s eyes grew wide as he stuttered, “Th…the Dragonare!” He quickly pulled a chair out and said, “Please, sit down and I will tell you everything we know…”

Aerandir walked slowly over to the table. He glanced down at the tabletop and thought that the dirt floor was cleaner to eat upon. He then heard the man speak again. “Care for a drink?” Aerandir shook his head, “No, It is nearly sunset, and it is nearly time for the dragon to feed. Just get to the point…”

The man nodded vigorously and replied “Ye…yes of course!” He sat down a crossed from Aerandir and started again. “A couple boy’s in our village were playing on the cliffs near the woods north of us. One of them noticed a strange ship that none of us has seen before… It looked more elegant than any king’s ship! Anyways, it had run aground and many men were fleeing from it as fast as they could into the woods. A second later the boys heard an ear splitting roar and a dragon fell upon the ship. With one blast it incinerated the ship and then chased the group. It killed the few of the men that it could and then flew over the forest to the Cora Mountains in the west. That was a week ago… No village has ever made contact with the group, so they might be dead. No one goes into that forest light heartedly.”

Aerandir sat silently and then asked, “Are you sure the boy’s were not just playing a stupid joke to get some attention?” The man shook his head vigorously, “No, they would never do such a thing!”

Aerandir stood up and said softly as he turned to leave, “Then I will head out at once… Perhaps I will find the survivor’s.” He said nothing more as he quickly exited the tavern. He whistled one high pitch note and Draco came running. Once he stopped infront of him, Aerandir untied the reins and hopped onto the saddle. He then turned towards the north and drove his heels into Draco’s sides and galloped towards the woods.

It took him an hour to reach the woods just as the sun was setting. The dark orange light cast a strange look inside the forest, and it was a little hard for Aerandir to adjust his eyes to. He rode for about two more hours inside the forest. He began to wonder if it truly was a hoax… and was about to return when he suddenly heard rustling of leaves to his right. With out even thinking he quickly grabbed his massive Elvin longbow off the back of his saddle and quickly knocked an arrow to the string. Suddenly two people ran out from the trees and nearly into him. Aerandir almost fired but was able to catch himself before he did. He quickly said, “Who are you and what kind of trouble are you in!”

It had been three days; three long days where there had been pain and constant fear. The ship had hit shore and collapsed, and upon that, a dragon had attacked. Her and her body guards and soldiers fled into the forest of Servia. From there, those three days had taken a toll on her. There hadn't been any time to sleep, as Vanya Elladan had never known when the dragon was going to attack. All of her body guards and soldiers had been killed. All of them except her most trusted body guard, Malek. They were running about the forest as the red dragon had attacked again.

The sun was setting and the temperature was dropping, which made it slightly chilly and incredibly hard to see. Several times she found herself stumbling over fallen down trees and general things that were in the way, because she couldn't see. A few times she called out to see if Malek was still with her. They were cutting out from the leaves and creating quite the ruckus through the leaves when they suddenly came out to find a man pointing an arrow at them. Vanya was a little out of breath, so she was unable to speak for a few moments. The white shirt that she wore was stained and ripped along the sleeves, the stomach, the back, and the bottom. She also wore a pair of grey pants, also having tears in several places. Her long brown hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail with some leaves and twigs in the strands, not exactly looking like a normal person because of her appearance. When she had enough breath to speak another moment later. "Dragon...red dragon. Coming...this way..." She barely had a chance to get the words out before there was a crashing sound, a couple trees falling, and then sight of the red dragon she had spoken of closing in and getting ready to attack.

It had been a terrible voyage. He had gotten seasick, and had to stay in bed until a day before the attack. And then, of course, there was the attack. He'd spent the last three days trying to make sure Vanya was not killed by that monstrous red dragon.

Now he ran near her, sometimes behind, sometimes off to one side, trying to get in between her and possible threats. Lightly hopping over branches and other obstacles, he kept up a good pace, occasionaly helping Vanya stand up again. The branches and leaves did not bother him due to his thick travelling cloak and hood.

They burst out of the forest, and he saw the man with the bow. Without even realizing it, he was in front of her, between her and the mysterious archer. Just when he thought he recognized the archer, he heard the dragon coming. He waited until the last moment, so he knew that his defensive measures would not come to naught. Then with every ounce of his strength, he shoved Vanya out of the way of the incoming dragon's claws. Before she even had time to land, Malek had taken the hit and he had already fallen into darkness.

He watched the two and relaxed his bow for a moment. When the woman said "Dragon...red dragon. Coming...this way..." He looked back to where he saw them come out seeing the dragon come at them. He pulled his arrow back till his fingers were touching his cheek and fired at the dragon's eye. This motion was less than a second, and his arrow found its mark in the soft tissue of the dragons right eye.

The dragon roared as Aerandir jumped off his horse and over the fallen body guard. By the looks of it he may already be dead. He dropped his massive longbow and pulled his beautiful sword out. The small ring on the chain necklace; tied to the hilt under the cross guard dangled around like crazy.

The dragon swung at Aerandir with it's massive claws... Blood sprayed everywhere, and a lot off it. But it wasn't Aerandir's... He was standing with his blade down and facing behind him on his left side, covered in the dragons blood. A large Claw was laying on the ground, and when looking at the dragons foot, half of another one was cut in half. His sword, was unbreakable... only a few ever made in the ancient times before the dragons... The art was lost forever, which made his sword priceless.

The word "Arbitrator" On the flat part of the blade almost seemed to glow slightly at the taste of the blood.

The dragon Roared in anger and pain then released a huge blast of fire at Aerandir. Aerandir simply lifted his hand, almost lazily, palm open towards the dragon. The fire stopped, an inch away from Aerandir's hand as if it hit a brick wall. The inferno lasted for a minute, but seemed like an eternity.

When the dragon let up, Aerandir bolted towards the dragon, threw the remaining flames undaunted he swung his sword up. His blade sunk deep into the dragons chest, sliding upwards making a huge gash. The Dragon roared once again in agonizing pain, Jumped up and flew away from Aerandir, trying to live longer...though that would never happen... It would die from blood loss in about an hour.

Aerandir swung his blade to the right and stopped it parallel to his body. The remaining blood on it flung off and onto the ground and trees near him. He then twisted his wrist, spinning the blade in a fluid motion straight into his sheath on his left side.

His cloaked flapped out behind him, revealing his plain traveling clothes, his only armor was a golden gauntlet on his left arm. Which was now soaked with his blood. His wound had opened again, but he learned to ignore the pain long ago.

He turned to the woman and said softly, "There is a village ten miles from here... I say leave your companion, he is most likely to be dead in an half an hour or so..."

Vanya hadn't had enough time to catch her breath after speaking to the man about the red dragon that was heading towards them. She had not had a chance to say anything after the words she had already spoken, either, because right when she finished, the creature had charged forward. Her body had twisted slightly to get ready to run from the attack, a high-pitched and loud scream erupting from her lips at the feeling of something hard hitting her. It was a moment later when she realized Malek was in front of her, claws slashing through him and his body floating to the ground easily. Her own body hit the ground with a harsh thud, bouncing slightly on her back and twisting so she was curled up with her arms over her head. In the way that she was lying on the ground, her head was pointed to the direction of the man with the bow and arrows. With her hands situated the way they were, she could easily see the man's movements. He moved rather gracefully, for lack of a better word, but it was obvious that he was some sort of fighter or warrior. Her head was slightly fuzzy from the impact she had received by her body guard, who appeared to be dead at the moment.

She groaned slightly, lifting her head to shake herself out of the daze and crawl across the ground to get to Malek's body. By his point, an enormous fire blast came in her direction since she was behind the man, but never once she did feel the heat scarring or burning her flesh. Instead, she reached her body guard's body rather easily. He was lying upon his stomach, so Vanya rolled him over, smearing his blood upon her hands from the action. She brought them up to touch his face. "Wake up...come on, wake up!" He couldn't die, she wouldn't allow it. Her body turned to the man who had just saved him. "Help me, please. We can't allow him to die. Please, I beg you. I can't get him to the village by myself, and if I try, he will die on the way." Her voice paused, before dropping to a softer and more pleading tone. "Please, Sir...please."

Aerandir was reaching for his bow as he heard the woman started to beg for his help... He sighed and walked to his horse as if he didn't hear her. He packed his bow and prepared to mount when he heard her a second time...

He stopped... what was wrong with him... When did he become so heartless? Was it because of the death of his friend long ago? He glanced back at the woman... His hood was still on his head, so his face couldn't be seen.

He really didn't want to perform the magic that would save the man... his strength was weakened due to the spell he casted earlier. He would regret it greatly in the morning...

He finally turned and walked back to the woman, covered in the mans blood. He knelt down on his right knee and placed his left armored hand on the mans chest... When he glanced at his face his eyes widened... Though She would have never have seen it. "Malek? What is he doing here?" He thought to himself. He didn't think of it much but whispered the spell under his breath.

His left hand began to glow and Aerandir channeled his and the dragon's spirit into it. Making it much more powerful. A few minutes went by and Maleks wounds began to heal, rather fast actually for such deep gashes. Aerandir's arm was pouring with his own blood, and seeping through the opening's in his gauntlet.

Soon the gashes were no more, but only bruising remained, and will for a week or two. Aerandir Grunted in pain as he stood up and a whispered his final spell for the day, stopping his own bleeding.

He took a moment... breathing slowly to regain some strength for the trek back to small town of Seton. He then said softly, "He... will live..." Then with out another word he bent over and lifted Malek quite easily onto Draco. He then said, "Try to keep up M'lady..." with that, he started walking, his horse following with out being told.

He would walked very silently to the right of his horse... What was Malek doing back in Alengesta? He left after the last war... going to tell his king about the dragons over here... So why was he back? and with a woman?

Why did this had to happen now? During his journey to find Acharon... Looks like it will be postponed for a while longer...

He was walking away, even as Vanya begged him to help her. "Please." She begged him again, and he finally paused in his movements. The man who had helped her and Malek glanced back before he headed her way. Vanya scooted back quickly, unsure if he was going to then attack her. Her right hand was about to move into her boot where she kept a small dagger, but he man simply needed down next to Malek's unmoving body. He was going to help him, and help her again. For that she was most thankful and grateful for this man. He hadn't appeared friendly at first, but maybe he had kindness in him after all.

Once the deep gashes in her body guard's body were healed, he stood up, and her eyes caught sight of the blood that had seeped down his arm and onto the armor. She was going to mention it, perhaps offer to help his as well, but she realized that the offer would have been silly as he had magic to heal it himself. "Thank -" He cut her off with his actions as he leaned down to pick up Male's body and then placed it upon his horse. His next words managed to draw her to her feet with a grunt of pain of her own. She took a deep breath and began to follow his actions. Vanya was quiet herself; she was...so tired, cut up, and bruised herself. If she didn't talk or try to keep herself preoccupied, she was going to slip unconscious. Her left hand had placed loosely on the side of the horse as she moved. "Thank you, Sir...words cannot express how truly...thankful I am." Her right hand moved up and brushed over the cut upon her right cheek. "May I ask of your name?"

Aerandir heard the woman speaking. He listened but did not say much. He was still slightly irritated that he would have to postpone his search for Acharon.

When she asked him the question he still didn't speak... acting that he didn't hear her. He then decided against it, feeling slightly guilty.

He spoke softly, if she wasn't paying attention she might not have heard it. "My name is Aerandir Amandil... And you do not have to thank me... For I was only doing what I was meant to do."

He glanced at her, the sun was behind him so the hood hid his face extremely well. He noticed that she was about to fall over from fatigue... He stopped Draco and offered his hand to help her onto the horse behind Malek, who was slumped over onto the horses neck. If she would accept to get on or not, that was her problem.

Once they would start moving again, he would quietly say, "What is your name?"

He did not speak much, which made Vanya slowly close her mouth. Perhaps he just did not want to talk, which was completely fine with her. He had just saved her life as well as Malek's life. All she had to do was stand there and be grateful for his actions and all that he had done, which she was. There was no way she could thank him enough. Her thoughts faded, picking up the soft sound of the man's name. His name was Aerandir Amandil. The name rang some kind of bell in her head, but it was probably nothing. Any name she heard rung a bell to her.

He looked at her, and she saw it from the corner of her eye. The horse suddenly stopped, and she nearly fell over from the sudden halt. He offered her a hand up onto the horse, and when she was moving to get up, she lost her balance from being so exhausted. She fell straight into his arms, or at least against him and she caught herself by using him. After a limitless amount of apologies, she pulled herself up with new found strength and leaned her light weight against Malek's body. When they were moving again, she spoke softly. "My name is Vanya. This here is Malek, my most trusted body guard. I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for him."
