Hailie tried not to let the fact, she was the first of the interns to actually be assigned to a patient, go to her head. She knew if she screwed this up, it would be bye-bye dream job, hello clinic hours, but she did allow herself a small smile as she left House’s office. It wasn’t long before she discovered the nurses’ station and found out which room Kyle Madison had been set up in. A nurse also handed over a file on the patient that had been forwarded from his doctors in California. She gave her thanks and started in the direction of Kyle’s room, flicking through the file in her hands as she went.

It was certainly an interesting case; cancer cells that didn’t behave like cancer in a boy who seemed perfectly healthy, other than severe fatigue and a lack of energy. Along with the notes of the baffled doctors in California was a complete medical history and a copy of the form Kyle’s father had been asked to fill out at the door. With theories already running rampant through her mind, Hailie closed the file and looked up to find herself outside Kyle’s room. She snapped into doctor-mode and stepped into the room, pulling the sliding door shut behind her.

‘Hello Kyle, Mr Madison,’ she said, offering the boy in the bed a reassuring smile and his father a polite nod. ‘I’m Doctor Alexander. I work for Doctor House and I’ll be in charge of your care under him.’

She pulled his chart from the hook at the end of his bed and gave it the once over. His O2 levels were down and his white blood cell count was slightly elevated, but both numbers fell within the acceptable range for his age. Other than that, his chart told her that he was the perfect picture of health. His BP was normal, his heart rate was fine and his respiration rate was excellent, despite what the oxygen levels indicated. She snapped the chart folder shut and looked back at her patient and his father.

‘I know you must get tired of answering this, but is there any history of cancer in the family that you know of?’ she asked, directing the question at Mr Madison. Of course, she already had his answer in the file in her hand, but she had always been one to want to hear it from the horse’s mouth. ‘Anything at all?’

Her jaw agape, she stood staring at the door even after the male intern left to go complete the clinic hours he had been assigned to do. Looking at the other two standing there, she made a grimace and then walked away. Wasn't there some wort of paperwork for her to fill out? Didn't she need a hospital ID card so that people knew she actually worked there? And what about insurance benefits? No, she had simply been given and assignment and no further instructions. She didn't mind the fact that she had been given clinic hours, but there seemed to be no organization at all!

Kinga retraced her steps back to the secretary to try and find out what was going on at this hospital and how she was supposed to complete her job without having any idea what her job was.

"Excuse me again, I..."

Cutting her off before she could finish, the plump secretary said, "Wow, I believe you've set a new record."

"Wait, what?" she asked, not understanding what the secretary was referring to.

"Dr. House is harsh, but an intern has never quit THIS early in the game," exclaimed the secretary, rolling her eyes and she shifted some papers around.

"Excuse me, I'm not quitting. I'm simply asking for some information. You see, I went over and he assigned me to do...."

Interrupting her again the secretary said, "Listen hun, I have a lot of work to do. Perhaps you should go to Dr. Cuddy, she is House's superior and knows how to deal with him." Looking up at Kinga, she finished, "down that hall, go up the elevator to level 2, turn right and then your first left."

Kinga, confused and rather dazed, followed the secretary's instructions and made her way to the office. After getting lost, twice, she finally found the right door and knocked. Hearing the words "Come in" she opened the door and entered.

"Yes? How may I help you?"

Stretching out her arm Kinga replied, "Hello, my name is Dr. Kinga Mehra. I think I'm one of Dr. House's new interns."

Looking as if she completely understand what was going on, Dr. Cuddy's face relaxed and she smiled, trying to comfort the new, confused doctor who had no doubt just been annihilated by Dr. House's uncanny wit and humor.

"I'm sorry you've had a bad run in with him, but he's like that to everyone. If he called you in, then you are accepted, so don't worry about that. Apparently he's not giving anyone any interviews."

Kinga also relaxed when she heard this. It wasn't just her. "Thank you. But don't we need to sign some forms? Register with the staff?"

Cuddy realized that House hadn't done anything with these interns yet, except for give them assignments. He couldn't keep doing that, bypassing all of the paperwork and using people for his own needs. He may be an extraordinary doctor and diagnostician, but he still needed to play by some of the rules. She would have to have a talk with him later. But to Kinga she said,

"I'll take care of that today. If he gave you an assignment though, I suggest you go and do that before he forgets who you are. That is, if he hasn't already." Feeling bad after seeing Kinga's face she added, "He really is a great doctor though. Just stick with it."

Kinga said goodbye and thank you and then left the office. Making her way downstairs, she decided to follow the advice and made her way to the designated clinic area. Letting the nurse station know she was there and why, she was directed to an empty room and started taking in patients. The first one walked in, took off his pants, and lay down on the table face down. Lowering the band of his underwear, his bare bottom was completely showing even poised to stick up in the air.

"What seems to be the problem?"

"You're the doctor, you tell me whats wrong with it. All I know is it itches like crazy and I can't sit down anymore."

Dr. Kinga Mehra put on her gloves and started her first day at Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.

"No," Kyle said in response to the cancer history question. No one in his family or bloodline had ever had cancer, not even a trace or start of it. He was confused as to why everyone was diagnosing him with cancer off the bat when the cells didn't exactly have the same biological signature as cancer.

His father instantly became impatient. "Where the hell is Doctor House? We all the way across the damn United States, and now we're being treated by a grunt?" Kyle rolled his eyes at his father's sudden outrage. He normally did this when things didn't go his way. Kyle had learned, unknowingly, from his father about how to control his temper and keep his patience strong. He had a lot of patience. If Doctor House wasn't in at the moment, then he would be more than willing to wait. After all, he was only dying, everyone starts that process...from the moment they are born.

"Dad," he said, "it's okay. I can wait."

"Well, I can't. I'm going downstairs to get something to eat. Tell Doctor House that he can expect a word from my lawyer soon." He left the room in a frustrated hurry.

"Sorry," Kyle said to Doctor Alexander. "My dad can be a real jackass sometimes."

“Can I have hot chocolate in that French vanilla cappuccino?” The girl behind the counter gave Gordon a questioning look, before picking up the cup a little too obviously and walking out of sight, where he distinctly heard her mutter ‘House’. Or so he thought, anyway. This isn’t so bad. The others might have viewed this as a humiliating, menial task. But not him. He wasn’t really accustomed to working very hard anyway, and House probably knew that. Hell, House wasn’t known for his enthusiasm. At least here he was outside, away from paperwork and clinic hours. Suddenly the girl was back, and he awkwardly paid the total before quickly manoeuvring out of the busy shop.

The day had turned into an unusually nice one. The Sun was beating down hard, and people were out and about in their summer clothes soaking up the rays. Gordon gave thought to his own appearance, and envied the other people for not having to wear lab coats; his own, strangely, smelt strongly of antiseptic and old perfume. He’d noticed House hadn’t worn a lab coat either. Did that mean it was OK for him not to? Reasoning the Dean of Medicine probably made allowances for House, he decided it probably wasn’t OK. He didn’t even know why he had worn his outside. Peeling it off while balancing the coffee, he threw the white coat over his shoulder and began an enjoyable stroll back to the hospital.

Dr. House was sitting in his chair waiting for Cassandra to answer the phone. He was still angry about Dylan’s retort and was hoping he was doing what he had asked of him. When Cassandra’s voice came through the receiver House briefly forgot about Dylan and his plans to torment him, “Cassandra Walker, How are you today? This is Dr. House, your boss, and I am wondering why you are home to answer your phone when you should be here looking into a transfer patient. You have twenty minutes to get to my office before I fire you.” House loved his little game and he was ready to test all of these young doctors extensively. If they wanted to learn from the best, if they wanted to be the best, they needed to take the job seriously and do everything he asked.

After listening to anything else Cassandra had to say House hung up the phone and hobbled over to his cane, which still lay on the floor near the wall he threw it at. He picked up the cane and started toward the door just as Dr. Cuddy rounded the corner and entered the room. “You know we cannot make out in here. They can see through the door,” House said in that teasing voice that Cuddy found extremely annoying. She ignored his games and spoke bluntly and angrily, “House, you are the best doctor here and I am happy that you finally called in some employees, but what about paperwork. They need ID or they cannot be walking around the hospital and how the hell did you get a whole staff together in less than two hours?” House thought for a second before giving a short response, “They aren’t a staff so much as they are guinea pigs.” Cuddy just sighed, she didn’t know exactly what he meant but she knew he was up to some silly game. She handed House a large stack of papers saying, “Whatever House, just get their information and keep them out of trouble.” She didn’t wait for a response, mostly because she knew it wouldn’t be important, and headed for the door. She stopped briefly and reminded House that his staff should be used to benefit the hospital. “I do not pay them to do menial tasks for you. They are medical doctors, not your butlers,” Cuddy said before leaving the room and disappearing down the hall.

House put the stack of papers on his desk before limping out of the room. He would have them fill the paperwork out, at some point. Dr. House had another concern on his mind at the moment; he needed to check up on his lab rats and make sure the experiment was working. He had a perfect idea in mind for the evaluation method and he was so attuned to the personalities of others that he knew just how to annoy each and every one of his toys. Dylan was his main target because he made the mistake of standing up to House and even though that may help him later in the game it was a bad idea to pull that kind of crap now. For now House decided to check on Kinga Mehra. He walked down to the clinic where he expected her to be and looked at the sign-in log. Kinga Mehra was covering for House, but so was Dylan Rae. House shook his head and thought, “That is going to cost him another fifteen points.” He was really getting annoyed with this kid and he couldn’t wait to humiliate him. House glanced at his watch and saw that an hour had gone by. Soon his staff would meet, for the first time, in the conference room for differential diagnosis. House was so excited to see how his new staff was going to perform in such an environment and he was even more excited to see how humans react to each other when they know they must work together even as enemies. He walked back to the conference room and pulled his dry erase board up to the table. He wrote the names of the five current interns across the top of the board and then returned to his office to wait for Cassandra’s arrival, Hailie’s report, and his coffee.

“Cassandra Walker, How are you today? This is Dr. House, your boss, and I am wondering why you are home to answer your phone when you should be here looking into a transfer patient. You have twenty minutes to get to my office before I fire you.”

"Late?!" She exclaimed, wanting to get a word in edgewise but the only response was the dial tone.

"Eh-heh. Silly girl-child, a'ready late for her own job." Her aunt chuckled, shuffling the cards much like how it's done in the Casinos.

Cassandra only shot a glare at her but had no time to stir up an argument. She bolted from the kitchen, rounded the corner while snatching the car keys from the rack and made it to the garage. She slipped into the slick, black Acura and shoved the key into the keyhole, listening to her car roar to life.

"I can't believe I'm late. How in the hell? I bet my Aunt forgot to mention I got the job. What an incompetent old bat." She cussed under her breath, clicking the garage button on the side of the key and hitting her car in reverse. "After all, it was she who kept pressuring me to take it after my Supervisor informed me and now she wants me to be late?" She spun the wheel around and put it into drive.

Anger boiled her but she chose to calm down - it was better to drive with her mind in the right place. She sped all the way over to the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital where her new job lies. The moment she parked, she threw her seatbelt off and lept through the open window of her car, lowering it and locking it to make sure no one can take it for a joyride.

She smoothed out her shirt - wait a second. "Argh. I forgot to change." She muttered to herself. "This isn't professional at all." No time to run back, she checked her watch and noticed she was 5 minutes early. To the elevator and up she went, making sure her T-shirt was straight and her jeans had no snags or creases in them. After all, it did hug her curves but it wasn't going to be a factor whether she'd keep her job or not. The fact she was under-dress was.

"Hello." The secretary glanced up

"I'm here to see Dr. House." Cassandra smiled. "I'm-"

The secretary had cut her off, seemingly uncaring for the girl's name. She only pointed with her pen to where she had to go. Cassandra's smile turned to a slight frown, walking down the hall to House's office.

Knock. Knock. Waiting for a response before she walked in.

After about 45 minutes of working in the clinic, Kinga had already seen four different patients. The first one, of course, had been the man with the awful rash on his bottom. At first he had lied about the condition, saying it had just appeared suddenly. However, after the threat of having to submit him in for tests which would include a big, fat needle to draw his blood to search for infection, he fessed up to it being a simple case of poison ivy that had gone untreated. Apparently, he had been camping with a few of his buddies and got a bad case of the "runs". Entering the forest, he proceeded to do his business beside a tree which happened to have a patch of poison ivy surrounding it. Not wanting to be embarrassed, he kept his condition secret from his friends for the entire week that they were camping but it had worsened and finally he was prompted to come to the hospital. Kinga simply prescribed a simple cream and off he went, walking strangely so as not to hear a strange squishing sound as he walked due to the cream which had been administered.

Her next patient was a simple case of bronchitis and the patient after that was obviously a hypochondriac. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her except for a cough which she complained had lasted for 3 years. However, looking into her throat and doing a breath test to see how strong her breathing was, it was obvious that the only irritation was from the cough and there was nothing to actually cause the cough. Placebo's should placate the poor woman.

However, the last patient was somewhat different, in fact she was still trying to figure out what to do. Currently, after 10 minutes of examination, the patient was in the room while Kinga went outside for a moment to think. A nurse was inside doing some routine tests and hopefully giving a lolly pop to the four year old girl who was no doubt somewhat traumatized. She must have come in with an adult, or else the nurses never would have signed her in. And she was not old enough to do the paperwork which had granted her access to the clinic. However, the girl was led into the room alone by a nurse and the mother, or father, was no where in sight. Even stranger was the fact that the girl had a broken arm, which was already in a cast, and a large hematoma located on the upper right side of her forehead. Why did something like this have to happen on her first day? Should she call child services? Maybe the parent or guardian was still in the hospital... But this child had serious signs of abuse and possible neglect. There were only two people she could consult with for advice. Dr. Cuddy, who she had already been to that day and didn't think it was right to bother again. Dr. House, who would probably deem her incompetent and laugh her out of the building. She decided she would have to make the decision on her own and just hoped that Dr. House didn't walk in and catch her in her state of indecisiveness.

Dylan was getting extremely fed up with house at this point.

Well he gave me the choice of clinic hours and being his damned slave. Damn it I really need this job.

He had just walked back into the Hospital after going to get the Indian food House had asked for. Even though he wasn't originaly going to do it, he felt it might make up for the bad first impression he had given. Plus he was done with his share of clinic hours and had nothing better to do. He approached the glass doors of House's office and with his free hand wrapped his knuckles over it. A murmer from the other side gave the okay to come in.

He walked into the office and went straight to the man's desk before tossing the food onto it.

"Chicken Tikka Masala." Dylan spoke. House stared at him not saying a word. "That's what you wanted right?"

Watching Dylan enter House’s office from down the corridor, Gordon stepped up his pace significantly. Taking time to throw a smoochy hello to a particularly cute nurse, he rounded on the door and gently pushed it open, walking up behind the other young doctor. Carefully, making sure not to burn himself on the coffee, he placed it on the Head of Diagnostics desk, keeping his gaze averted - less chance for House to pick up on something he’d done wrong, he figured. Running his hand down his tie idly, Gordon stepped back some paces so as to be behind Dylan and formed his best ‘make use of me’ stance he could.

The Hematologist noticed some friction in the air, and wanting to get away and busy himself with something as fast as possible, he piped up, “Dr. House, is there anything else you need?” Gordon had noticed the stack of paperwork on the desk, but had still offered himself up. He did hope that House would not make him commit to the arduous task of filling out forms, but at this point anything went; you had to bleed a little to get anything in this world. He’d have time to argue with the cynical genius later on. His only current priority was surviving the first few days. Maybe he should buy House a coffee at the start of every day? Gordon was left to his thoughts as he awaited House’s response.
