Default READ: Advanced RP Standards and Enforcement

Hey guys!

There’s a big reason why we changed the forum format to different “levels” of RP, namely differentiating between Casual and Advanced RP. We want to create a special environment in Advanced RP where RPers can come and take part in sophisticated, entertaining storylines that go beyond the simple fun RP that we encourage in Casual RP. In order to properly create this environment, sadly, we must make and enforce rules to that end. For those of you who have read the stickied rules thread in Advanced RP, you know that there have been additions to the old rules. For those of you who haven’t, go read the rules, and come back.

Let me quote the rules:

- NO one-liners. You can't develop a character or plot by posting single sentences.
- Post at least a FEW full paragraphs. Did you react to the other characters in the scene? Did you act out and flesh out your character at all? Paragraphs are at least 5 sentences.
- Each post must advance some element of the story in a significant manner.
Most rules violations are of the second two rules in that list. “A few full paragraphs” means exactly that: at least 2-3 full paragraphs, or at least 12-15 sentences. A handful of sentences are really the bare-bones of roleplaying, and we want an environment where roleplay can be deeper and more fully-fleshed than that.

Long posts may seem unnecessary, but be assured that they are. You’ll have a hard time fulfilling the other rule without them. Advancing the story in a significant manner is no simple task. We’re not splitting hairs when judging what is or is not significant. If you were able to post something in 5 sentences, chances are it was not significant. You can lengthen your post by including something significant.

Significant action can be almost anything. You might introduce a new element (or character) that advances the plot, have your character take an action that the other players can’t ignore, or that sets up something for later. You might simply characterize your character(s), be it by delving into his/her thoughts, or having them take seemingly trivial actions that reveal aspects of the character underneath. You might explore the relationships between the characters, be it between your own characters or with those of another player. These are all examples of significant roleplay.

Without something significant in your post, why are you posting at all? It is, after all, not significant.

We will be stepping up enforcement of these rules, especially the latter two, in the coming weeks. We hope that you guys, especially the thread starters, will be able to self-police yourselves, so that we as moderators won’t have to step in very much. As of posting this notice, several threads in Advanced RP are what I would consider in borderline violation of the rules. We want to give you guys a chance to correct things before bringing in the Iron Fist of RP, though if improvement isn't seen, we'll be forced to step in. I also realize some of these threads were posted before we switched to an Advanced RP/Casual RP system; if this is true of your thread, and you want to be moved to Casual, just PM a mod and we’ll do so.

If you have questions, feel free to PM a mod. Together, we can put together an environment for roleplaying that is superior to any other on the web. Thanks for reading this, and thanks again and in advance for your cooperation.
