Jessica slammed the case of medical supplies shut, making many of the new recruits jump nervously. "For goodness sakes Shakes, just get over it, Firley called you Tank, big deal, if you don't mind I'd rather not listen to childish arguing over nicknames."

She sat down, her nostrils flaring slightly as she scowled at Shakes, "I may be one of the youngest here, but I tell you this now, I don't always act it. The only time I will need my back covering is when I am treating a patient. Now that the unpleasantness is over, maybe we can get to being civil to each other." She smiled at Firley, "I guess I'm in pretty safe hands if you're nearby," she said after a moment, a smile crossing her face as she brushed her blonde hair from her face, the gesture was innocent enough, but sexy in a strange way.

She liked the people she had been put with for this mission, she was still wary of Maxine though, she was good looking in her own right, her skills probably far exceeded that of Jessica's, and she seemed to get on more with the group than herself did. She never got much into human company, not after her friend's accident. She cursed herself for not taking that knife when she had the chance. She snapped out of it, as she gazed at Alec who was pacing around.

"Sir, may I ask a question?" she said standing for a moment, "we have enough medical supplies, but I was wondering why I am the only medic here because I would have thought that there would have been more assigned to this group." She was worried that she was going to get knocked back for such a stupid question, so she shut her mouth before she said anymore and sat back down.

Something in the back of Shakes' mind flickered like a pilot light on an oven when Maxine called him by his real name. It took all of his self control to stop himself from cringing but there was no anger anymore; he had already made his point with the others and he certainly wasn't in the mood for kicking off again, least of all with the one person in this squad who had yet to annoy him.

Shakes would never call himself the most observant man in the universe but he could tell from Dr. Halls actions that she was conflicted about certain things; as if she was motivated by a need for companionship while being held back by fear. He thought on this for a moment before deciding that he'd do well to stop analysing this woman, namely because he wasn't drawing any kind of positive conclusion.

When Maxine informed him of her professional opinion on the impacts and moved to the window Shakes gently clicked his tongue and watched her move: he was in enemy territory here and it was a situation he hadn't been in for a while. While he would never admit it to anyone, he was nervous. With a degree of effort he managed to override this feeling of trepidation and slowly sidled up next to Dr. Hall, his massive form belying his inner feelings about the situation. Indeed, even though from the outside he appeared unmoved his mind was a confused mass of warnings and emotions.

What seemed like an age passed as Shakes stood next to Maxine, staring out into space. He thought that he enjoyed her company but for some reason he still felt like shuffling his feet like a nervous little boy about to kiss a girl behind a building at school. What was he to say? He didn't know. He certainly wasn't about to go on some romantic spiel that would befit the moment, and so he settled on a response to her original statement.

"So..." he said before pausing and breathing out. "Looks like the folks we're looking for aint gonna be there when we arive."

Shakes hated himself for making such a banal comment. He knew full well that the debris wasn't big enough to indicate the absolute destruction of the cargo ship, but he said it anyway because he couldn't think of anything else. In fact just about all he could think about was how much he wanted to tell her his 'real' name, just to stop her calling him Jordan in front of the others. Up here it was fine with only the pilots to hear her addressing him - although admittedly that last part did bother him - but back with the rest of the squad he dreaded what might happen to his reputation as a result.

Alec was absorbing the chaos around him, and shaking his head as he paced back and forth. He looked to the obviously intimidated medic who sat down after asking him something. He grinned lightly turning to her "Well everyone here has a basic knowledge of medicine, and routine procedures for in case of emergencies. I saw it fit to only take along one expert, do you doubt yourself?" He inquired feeding on her lack of confidence, which she made apparent. He enjoyed messing with people escpially before missions to piss them off mostly, he found that most people worked better fueled by anger, rather than doubt.

The impacts troubled Alec because he was assuming they were from the cargo ship. That would mean that the ship was more banged up then he thought, and the chances of survivors was growing less with each passing second. He sighed still pacing trying to ignore everyone else, he was never a social butterfly, not even on earth when he was surrounded by normal people. He figured it just wasn't one of his blessings, and ignored the loneliness that tended to creep over him every night.

Alecs misery grew as he got older, nothing would ever ease his pain, but he bottled it well. Not one person would ever see his anguish, never....he wouldn't allow it to be a weakness. He clenched his fist as he turned his head out the window, examining the stars his misery dispersing as his eyes danced across the many burning stars, the many planets, and the vast nothingness that was the universe. It was as beautiful as it was empty, he loved it, and it always seemed to drown his sorrow away.

He turned away from the window, quickly throwing his mask on, the one of fearless sergeant. He hated calling it that, but that is what it is, a mask to cover his true emotions, and his true being. His thoughts were interupted by a less than masculine pilots voice "We're nearing our destination, and ETA is ten minutes." Alec began prepping his mind for the ship, merely to avoid getting coldfeet, or stagefright some might say. He began breathing in, and out in a slow fashion to keep himself calm, remaining quiet he turned his attention to the window.

Alecs moment of peace, and bliss was rudely interuppted by a loud noise created by metal scraping against each other. The defenseive alarm started sounding off, howling a warning repeatedly to let everyone know the ships hull was breached. Alec was looking all over seeing nothing, but everything enshrouded by the red light of the alarm lights. He sighed in relief that noone had been harmed and they weren't dead, but he realized they must have hit something BIG to trigger the alarm.

The pilots voice shakey, and panicky came over the speakers "U-u-u-m we hi-t some debris, ya some debris!" his voice unsure as if convincing himself as well. Alec groaned as he started to head up to the cockpit cursing under his breath at the damn pilot. He didn't make it more then a few steps before his voice came out again "Eeeeveryone grab on to something, we're in for a crash landing!" his voice loud and hopeless.

The transport ship crashed into the cargo ships docking bay, metal, and other various parts of both ships colliding, and scraping. The noise was too much for Alecs ears, and he grabbed tightly onto his seat as he feared the worst. Shrapnel was scraping off the hull of the transport ship, lucky that it hadn't penetrated their defenses. What was really lucky for them was the fact that the docking bay had already apparently been pryed open from some other force.

The little transport ship flew sideways into the bay crashing into the solid adamantite floor scraping, and sliding across it. The windows shattering as they skid, the glass falling all over Alec, and the other crew, Alec only hoped everyone was still okay. He wondered how the hell they were going to walk without being pulled into space by the gravitational pull, but for now their ship appeared to be stuck behind the little bit of wall left. Someone would have to get into their suit, and float across the bay, and activate the emergency shield, which would activate a force field to seal them in safely.

Alec stood up feeling the pull of gravity, he fought forward pushing, tredging on towards the space suit. His eyes had come across the newest recruit private jenson, he was impaled by a hulking metal pole, his blood dripping into a crimson puddle below him. Alec also noticed that his insides were being sucked out of him, flying out the window painting it with a mucusy like blood.
Alecs somach churned as he managed to grab Jensons tags, putting them around his neck with his own.

He fought against the pull harder as he finally reached the suit, he grabbed onto it trying to remember how to get in the damn thing. He jumped quickly grabbing on to one of the bars hanging from the cieling of their ship, lowering himself into the suit. If he didn't move faster everyone would run out of air, and die, or be sucked away into space. He wouldn't have that, so he continued holding his breath as he let go of the bar, the gravitationa pull smashing him into the enormous wall above them.

The panel was below him, but would he make it in time, would he ever be able to get to it? He ignored his thoughts remaining confident, and determined. He grabbed onto a peice of the wall that sticking up, and pulled himself down. He continued this until finally he reached it, the panel, and with the simple touch of a button he went crashing to the floor. He groaned, and squirmed for a bit, but shortly after he passed out, his head hitting the ground as all of his strength seemed to be gone.

Maxine didn’t flinch as she heard the lumbering hulk of man that was Jordan shamble toward her. To her the sound of his metal boots clanging against the transport’s floor was pleasing. The actual noise was somewhat of an annoyance, but being aboard a metal starship and wearing the metal boots that were uniform was plenty enough to get a girl used to the sound. The pleasure was in what the sound meant to Maxine. The monstrous wonder had read her desired just fine and he made his way over to her and she couldn’t help but smile. She had gotten exactly what she wanted and she was happy to see him oblige. She wondered, briefly, if she only found interest in the man because of his age or if it was because of his compliment. In a way she knew neither was really reason enough to feel attracted to someone, but being a members of the space marines she knew that anymore reason would be difficult to get. Getting to know a man took time, effort, privacy, and a girly flirtatious attitude; none of which Maxine had or could do while aboard the starship.

Maxine wasn’t always the most perceptive individual as she was frequently too lost in her thoughts to notice the outside world, but when it came to men and love she was different. Only moments after Shakes took to her side she could tell there was far more to this man than she ever could have imagined, but then again there was more to her than he knew. He probably had his vices, his mistakes, his concerns, and his fears; and Maxine could sense that he felt uneasy around her. It wasn’t a bad uneasiness. It wasn’t the type of uneasiness one feels when around suspicious characters late at night, but rather a child like uneasiness. He was a man, a big man, and looking at him was frightening; but deep down he was a lost man. She knew his life was probably rough, because everyone she knew in the marines, including herself, joined to escape some rough past.

Maxine tongue gently glided over her top lip as she savored the nervous breathing of the giant. She always loved making men nervous, but it was all the more arousing when the big tough guys fell. She knew that no man or beast could take this man down, but she reveled in the fact that she could bring him to his knees; even if it was for a “dirtier” purpose. Dr. Hall bathed in the beauty of such thoughts as the two gazed out into the deep of space and without realizing it she had tilted her head to the side and leaned gently against his left bicep. She wanted it, but she didn’t intend on doing it. Maxine knew she couldn’t just treat the man as if he was already her boyfriend, but she just felt so comfortable with him and the window thing had always been her favorite romantic moments. On Earth she frequently watched the sunset through the sliding glass door at the back of the house. She rested her head on the shoulders of lovers then and she did the same when she gazed in space.

Luckily for Shakes, Maxine was too lost in euphoria to make any note of his silly response. She heard him speak, but the actual words were lost; although, she did savor the nervousness in his voice. Before he had any chance to attempt a reiteration of his response Maxine lifted her head and turned to him. She rested her hands on his massive arms and guided him to face her. Her intention to speak was delayed by the sheer awe factor that overcame her. He stood nearly a foot taller than her and his massive build overshadowed her so much that his bare skeleton was probably tougher than her. She was smiling because of the cuteness of his nervous speech, but she also seemed lost in sheer amazement at his side; though he was probably used to that effect. “I…um,” Maxine began, but she trailed off. She wasn’t sure what exactly she wanted to say, but it wasn’t what ended up coming out. It was as if all of a sudden she had some semblance of the sentence he had uttered only moments ago, but she didn’t realize what she was actually referring to when she said, “No…no I guess they won’t be.” Her response was almost as stupid as his, but probably for the same reason why his was so inarticulate in the first place.

She smiled and lifted herself up a few short inches by standing on her toes. She leaned in, resting her arms against his body and bringing her lips close to his face. The moment was tense and she wasn’t thinking about anything she was doing. It was almost as if someone was piloting her body and that someone was just as bad as the pilot of the transport. Deep down she knew what she wanted, but on the surface she was in such a blissful mindset that she hadn’t even been aware of her actions. Had it not been for the pilot speaking up in his annoying voice she probably would have embarrassed herself, but then despite feeling somewhat saved she was annoyed that the moment was ruined. One of the biggest things that pissed her off in life was when romantic moments crashed and burned and that seemed to happen to her a lot. “Corporal,” the pilot said, but he didn’t gain any response from her until he spoke again, “Corporal we are approaching the target, ETA 10 minutes.”

The pilot’s report shook Maxine out of her delusions and she regained control of her body. She pushed away from Shakes, in a nice cute way, and addressed the pilot, “Inform the Sergeant. Jordan and I will return to our seats for landing.” Maxine walked back over to Shakes. She knew she should return to her seat, but she knew she had about ten more minutes so she decided to spend a few more minutes in bliss. Unfortunately she was aware that it wouldn’t reach the same level it just had, but she figured she could take what she could get. The new feelings of bliss were short-lived however as she noticed a large shard of metal drifting in front of them. It seemingly came out of nowhere and it had been too late to avoid it. Instinctually she slumped into an empty chair and grabbed the console just as the ship shook more violently than it had up until that moment. She was thrown forward and her face slammed against the console. A crimson creek cascaded along her brow, skirted her delicate nose, and dripped to the floor off of her slender lips. She was disoriented and the sound of the alarm seemed distant at best. She heard the pilot say something over the loudspeaker, but the sound of the alarm, grinding metal, and the swirling torrent of thoughts that bombarded her subconscious kept her from making out any of the details.

What happened next happened in what seemed like an instant. The earsplitting sound of grinding metal and metallic collision filled the emptiness of the void in which they traveled. Screams echoed throughout the ship and Maxine’s disorientation was made worse as the ship careened out of control and span slightly as it grinded across the cargo ship’s bay. Although she had hurt her head, because she wasn’t strapped in it was that fact saved her life. The pilot had been fine when the impact occurred, but he didn’t fair so well now. As the ship slammed into the bay the front window was obliterated as the ship slammed into a catwalk. Maxine had been thrown to the ground by the initial impact and though she had a cut on her forehead and she was showered with glass, she remained in good health. The pilot on the other hand was crushed between the catwalk and the back of the cockpit. His body was essentially split in half and Maxine, though sickened, was glad that he died instantly. She could only imagine the suffering he would have gone through if he hadn’t been completely sliced in two. The ship’s computer noted the air loss in the back of the transport and, assuming that the bay doors had been opened, the transport sealed the cockpit door as a safety precaution for the pilots. Maxine rolled over and immediately noticed the lack of a vacuum effect in the room. Analyzing the situation she noticed that she was lucky the catwalk had completely sealed the broken window. Her only real problem was that the door to the cockpit was locked and she was literally under a catwalk that was only support by the window’s now bent frame. If the ship had collapsed the broken catwalk would have fallen and killed her. She was glad that her injuries were superficial and she was relieved in the realization that she was generally safe for the moment. Unfortunately this brief relaxation was cut short when she realized that Shakes may not have faired as well as she. Maxine quickly rolled over crushing several shards of glass into her skin. It hurt, but she didn’t notice it because calling out to Shakes was more of a priority to her at the moment. In a panicked voice Maxine cried, “Jordan…Jordan are you ok?”

Jessica looked at Alec, her eyes glinting in the light, "no I don't doubt myself I was just wondering why you decided on only one 'expert,'" she replied in her flirty tone.

She was sitting there, her fingers opening and closing the box of medical supplies, her nervousness apparent. She looked at Alec and wondered how he could keep so calm in the face of everything going on. He must have seen some stuff in his life she assumed as she stood up to walk over and see if he was alright, he always gave the impression that he was, but as she approached, she was knocked off her feet by the impact of the ship hitting the debris. After a moment of disorientation, she sat up, looking nervously around as she looked to see if everyone was alright.

She looked at her arm, "crap!" she exclaimed as she saw that she had hit her arm against one of the seats, it breaking the skin open on her arm. "Sir, could you chuck some dressing over here please?" she asked as she got up and leant against the seat her arm bleeding. She needed to sort herself out before she helped any others who were possibly hurt.

“Yes, I was talking to you” William replied shortly, as the man, ‘shakes’ or ‘tank’ in William’s opinion seemed to get pissed off of it, or at least, didn’t like it “And actually, I don’t give much about the name you given us, It’s either ‘tank’ or your real name for me…Sounds better then shakes…” With that William remained silent, as ‘Shakes’ stood up, and a ominous silence fell in the small passenger room. William self remained calm, and watched Shakes as he came in closer, pushing one of the new ones away, which tried to stand in his way to avoid a fight, or whatever reason the marine had.

then William felt a fist clenching amongst his fatigues, and soon enough he found himself staring into the eyes of Shakes, smelling the cigars, the whiskey and the sweat off the angered man, as he noticed that his fist rolled in his socket, ready to punch William. He only grinned, as he watched the armored guy. “Try me” William said simply, his face calm, no trace of fear noticeable in his blue eyes. He had been in a lot of fights, of course, not with a ‘tank’ like this, but it couldn’t bother William, he was somewhat used to get punched, and could take some punches.

But before Shakes actually could hit another piece of debris slammed into the ship, sending Shakes flying over the floor, crashing into a group unknown marines as William was thrown against his seat. He almost laughed at the sight of Shakes, as it looked quite embarrassing, and he kept watching as Shakes stood up, a grin of malice on his face, now seemingly set to kill the pilots, instead of William. The armored man walked past William, while he stood up, and pushed him against the chest again, making William fall back in his seat. “Ough, you big meanie” William said teasing, before he glanced over towards the girl, Jessica, which spoke towards Shakes, and then towards William self, saying that she would be in safe hands when William was nearby. William could only grin, as he moved a little in his seat, his face in a neutral look, but vaguely flattered. “I think you could say that, yes” William replied, shooting a small smile towards Jessica, before soon falling into boredom, his eyes glancing over from Jessica, some marines, Alec and the ceiling as he waited for their arrival.

William didn’t knew when he had fallen asleep, but he woke up under the red light of the alarms, as the pilot said they should brace themselves, for they would make a crash landing. William indeed braced himself, but soon saw himself, and others flying around the passenger room, the fowl scraping of metal on metal clearly hearable, while all windows sprung out of their sockets, and various shards of metal and glass flew around, one drilling through the shoulder armor of William, while others just got stuck in the armor self. After a few minutes, the lights in William’s eyes returned, as he rubbed his head, crouching up , the back of his armor colored crimson red as he felt a stinging pain in his shoulder. “God…damnit…” William coughed, as he reached for the place where the metal had pierced through his armor, but couldn’t reach it.

As he looked throughout the passenger room, he could see it was turned into a mess, a bloody mess, as well as a mess of bent metal, glass and what else had once been stuck on this ship. William let out another cough, as his blue eyes scanned for others. Some of the men were still alive, while others where simply split in half, pierced through or sliced by the glass. “What a freaking mess…” William grumbled, as he slowly stood up, quickly reaching for his helmet as he put it up, connecting it with the rest of his armor, his shoulder burning in pain. “Is everyone ok?”

Jessica decided she couldn't wait for the bandages and got up quickly, "Is anybody hurt?" she asked as she winced. She wrapped the bandage roughly around her arm, it would have to do for now, she cursed lightly as she got up.

She wasn't going to be of much use to any of the casualties if she couldn't move her arm. She cursed lightly as she walked over towards Firley, “Is everyone ok?”

"I'm fine," she replied, her arm still hurting slightly, "except for my arm that is, what about you?" She approached him and sat down, smiling lightly, "sounds like we all got shook up there huh?"

She pulled her gloves out and put them on, preparing for any form of medical emergency or injury she was going to have to patch up. She knew that now wasn't the time to get nervous as she felt her arms shaking lightly.

It had been a long time since a woman had been as forward with him as Maxine, and as she turned to face him his heart began to race: here was an object that physically he desired, but mentally was terrified of. When she spoke her words washed over him, absolutely lost in a swirling sea of conflicting emotions, and when she rested her arms on his he felt like he had lost all control of the situation. He was almost glad when the crash came: he was a marine dammit and this was not the time to be fraternising with someone, let alone a squad mate. At another time he would have jumped at the opportunity but right now they had a job to do and...

Shakes was hurled violently into the aft wall of the transport and peppered with shards of glass that lacerated his bare arms and head when the impact came. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Dr. Hall strike her head and momentarily feared for her before he realised he was in quite a large amount of pain. The console he had struck buckled under his considerable weight and bits of peripheral equipment rained down on his momentarily prone form from the ceiling as the transport executed a less-than-graceful crash landing in the docking bay of the cargo ship.

What seemed like minutes but what in actuality was little more than a few seconds passed before Shakes was able to regain his composure - or at least some semblance of it. He heard Maxine's call but was initially preoccupied with wiping blood from his eyes; the rest of his body was covered in the stuff but there was one major cut above his eye that was leaking like a sieve, he needed to deal with that one before he could reliably use his weapons.

Slowly he pushed himself up onto his knees and coughed "Ow", at least confirming to Maxine that he was still alive. Even slower was his progress to his feet, but once upright he mustered his ability to shrug off all but the most serious of injuries and simply cracked his bones. From the resulting pain he figured he'd broken at least a couple of ribs in the crash but it could have been a hell of a lot worse and for that he was glad. As he ran a hand through his hair - now stained red at the brow - to remove any dust or debris he looked over to Dr. Hall.

The moment they had shared was - for the moment - gone, and Shakes had returned to the callous and uncaring Marine that had made his reputation in the army while the rest of this squad were out trying to lose their virginity. Cautiously he approached Maxine who was trapped under a cat walk and was - in retrospect - lucky to be alive, he offered her a hand:

"First off, call me 'Shakes'," he said, not unkindly. "Can you move?"

Maxine reached out and took the hand that had been offered to her. Using his hand to pull herself from underneath the catwalk she looked up at him and could have sworn he had smiled at her. She groaned a little as glass dug into her back while she slid across the floor. It was probably the most painful thing she had ever felt and had she not been wearing her armored uniform her back would have been completely shredded, instead of only cut where her shirt rode up. Maxine was glad to see Shakes standing there to offer his hand. She figured she probably didn’t need the help to get up, but she was going to deny it either. In her mind the only thing that mattered was that herself and Shakes were unhurt. Has Shakes died she didn’t know what she would have done. In her mind’s eye she could see herself sitting amongst the debris crying. She knew she would have been heartbroken and she knew she would have been useless for the rest of the operation. She couldn’t lose him; it would have been like losing Glacier all over again.

Once free from under the catwalk Maxine braced herself against Shakes as she stood up. Her knees shook a little and she was still a little dizzy, but she managed to get to her feet without too much trouble. She looked up at Shakes and wiped the blood off of her face with the back of her hand. It was moments like these that could be reputation breakers for women, or any soldier, so she had to play it cool. “Of course I am ok, I am a marine not a doll,” she said with a bit of an attitude. She wasn’t offended by the fact that Shakes asked her if she was able to walk, but she couldn’t let him think she was fragile. “Just a little banged up is all. Sure as hell didn’t expect to start this operation off like this. What good are we as rescuers if we have no way to evac survivors,” she said a little calmer than before.

She took a moment to brush some of the loose glass off of her uniform and body. She flinched a few times when she tried to brush away a piece what was embedded in her skin and not just resting loosely about her person. “Who the hell trains these pilots,” she uttered in pain as she accidentally pushed on a deeply rooted shard of glass. “Fuck! That stings,” she cried in a loud angry voice! She decided it better to leave it alone until the medic could remove it with her tools. During this time she also looked her self over as best as possible. No broken bones, minor lacerations, a few bruises; nothing serious to worry about. She was happy about that, because with such minor injuries she was able to tough it out and look strong. She also knew that none of the injuries she had would physically hinder her work, though she knew the pain might make it difficult to concentrate on intricate tasks.

It was rather lucky that Maxine was a technical specialist, because a cursory analysis of the situation indicated that they were stuck in the room unless someone could override the ship’s safety protocol, or blow the door down. She knew Shakes would have been up for that, but not only did he lack the equipment, he lacked the safe distance that would have been necessary for such a feat. Maxine’s PDC was the only quick way out, the only question was if it survived the impact. The image in her eye was lost, but she noticed that was because the wire had come out of its port when it got caught on the seat as Maxine fell. She scrambled to pull the small computer from her belt and sighed in relief when she saw that it had only a minor crack on the screen. The image still appeared on the screen and it seemed to be in working order.

Maxine reached under the catwalk for her assault rifle and the cables that had fallen out of her equipment. She quickly hooked everything back up and slung her rifle again before proceeding to the door. “I will have us out in a minute Jor…I mean Shakes,” she told him. Once again she disabled the targeting software on the PDC and hooked up to the door’s control console. She only accessed the targeting program in the first place because she didn’t expect to have to use the PDC this much already. When the command console appeared on her PDC she began tapping away at the screen to override the door’s systems. It wouldn’t take too long, but she didn’t want to work in silence so she decided to ask, “Why do you want me to call you Shakes when you have such a nice name?” Only a moment after asking she heard the lock click and she had accessed the door, but she decided to wait on opening it until he answer her. It was pretty obvious he wasn't mad at her for calling him Jordan, but he must keep that name private if he asks to be called by a nickname and she knew if she opened the door he wouldn't answer her question.

Shakes was silent while Maxine spoke, his gaze flitting around the room. He was not being rude and returned his eyes to hers often enough to show this, but he was busy coming to a conclusion, the same conclusion that she had come to several minutes before: namely that they were trapped. He had a mild headache and desperately wanted a cigar and a drink although he knew the latter was probably not a good idea, however the fact he knew he couldn't have a smoke made him want one even more. He was starting to get stressed. He didn't show it, but he was.

He watched with muted admiration was Dr. Hall worked her technical magic on the door. She may have been desperate to prove herself as a viable marine but as far as he was concerned she had his vote when it came to the electronic side of things. Shakes knew engines and machinery, he worked with cogs and gears. However the the manipulation of computers and wires was not a foreign concept to him and he could appreciate this woman's talent. It was familiar enough, in fact, for him to recognise the faint 'click' of the locked door coming unstuck as a result of her work.

“Why do you want me to call you Shakes when you have such a nice name?”

Shakes paused on this, part of him wanting to ignore her and walk through the now unlocked door, another part wanting to tell her at least a fragment of his story so that she could understand him better. He chose a grey area somewhere in between...

"Lots'a reasons. Main one bein' it's a girl's name. I dunno if you've noticed sweetheart, but a 'nice name' don't exactly go with a face like this." Again, there was no anger or spite in his voice, though somewhere in his soul a small voice cried out that there should be, that he'd be justified in wanting to cry out at the memories his name elicited. But there was no discomfort, just a series of words that were betrayed by the way in which he said them. Sure, he wanted her to believe that the only reason he didn't like his name was because it sounded stupid, but if he was honest with himself he'd seen enough of this woman to work out that she wasn't stupid and would almost immediately see through his veneer. Still, it was all she was getting out of him for the moment.

"Door's done." he said with a point and a rough grin.
