[seeing as this is apparently side plot]

Valcenz had gone about business outside of the dungeons when he suddenly heard the footsteps in pursuit of his form. Irking a smooth, dark brow, he tilted his head to peer upon Jason and could not help but offer a smooth, calculating smile. If only he had known about those wannabe rebels sooner, then he could have sent out his little lapdog now and squashed them into silence, but then... He glanced at the figure, musing as he came to a stop before the man - but another loyal lap dog created by his whiles.

He had assigned the discovery of these upstarts to his lovely butcher but... well, a little competition would be so very amusing to watch. He mused calmly, taking his time in deciding; for it was his time after all, before looking down at Jason. "How good of you to return," he purred, eying the man carefully. He often questioned when his work upon Jason would unravel and his loyal dog would turn around to bite his fingers, but that wasn't a question for now. That, and Valcenz knew he could dispose of the man if needed.

"What a surprise. I do in fact have something for you to do." Part of him, just for the sheer amusement of it, almost thought of telling him to do something menial like empty chamber pots, but even Valcenz had his limits. Valuable tools were not to be abused. So while underlings like Jason and the butcher feared or respected him, they were over all appreciated by Valcenz. However, they were exceedingly disposable. If Valcenz could make them once, he could easily make them again.

He made a quick gesture, meaning that Jason should rise while Valcenz spoke to him. Two heads were better than one, but a little competition would be exciting. "There's a few upstarts riding on my coat tails you see. They want what I still fight hard to keep. I want you to use whatever method you have to find them... and please, do destroy them, because if you can do it, then it obviously isn't worth it to waste my time on them."

At that, Valcenz grinned in amusement to himself before striding on as though Jason were not but a statue sitting in his grand tower of towers. Something to be glanced at. Occasionally marveled at, but still something to be passed by in the end.

Jason rose and, as his master moved on, bowed his head in solemn appreciation of the chance to once again savour the cold embrace of the abyss. He had heard nothing of these 'upstarts', but someone in the castle would, and he relished the opportunity to send just a few more souls to the nothingness of oblivion.

Dragonsbane and Demons Bite hissed at his side and back respectively, eager to spill blood. Jason, his face masked by a visor wrought in infernal flame, lifted his head and made his way to the guard's quarters. A place where he was certain he would find skulls to claim and information to sap from the cleft brain pans of the fortunate cohorts of Lord Valcenz.

His eyes burned red with the prospect of fresh meat as he pounded down the corridor and a guard shrunk away as he approached. Jason grabbed him by the throat and squeezed, choking all of the air from his pathetically human lungs.

"You will find out what you can about a group of rebels seeking to overthrow our Lord. Report to me with what you find and you may yet live to enjoy the honour of dying in battle for our Master."

Jason released his grip and let the man fall, wheezing, to the floor.

"Go."

The guard sprinted away without hesitation as Jason continued his march. By the time he reached the living quarters he expected information to be readily available; but how he wished this would not be the case. He desired violence, and in his eyes there were none who were undeserving.

Purposefully he pounded forwards, the very ground seeming to throb beneath his feet as the blackness of his soul took hold of the environment in which he dwelled. Jason would serve his master once more, and in doing so would move one step closer to the paradise of total chaos.

Hatori walked into the slums of canyon city, easily the best place to find something, provided you didn't mind where it came from. If you had a bit of extra cash, you could get some pretty tasty food, as long as you didn't care who it came from. If there was a resistance, you could find someone in it here. Ignoring the beggars, who feared, respected, and envied the snake man rich enough to have a weapon; Hatori went to his favorite fence, the one man who could sell anything.

Before he even went to the normal contact spot, Hatori heard the sounds of a fight brewing. This concerned Hatori, as people were more concerned with not dieing from hunger to actually fight. Anytime you heard a fight, it meant someone stole, or someone tried to steal. Following the sounds of the fight, he noticed something that concerned him; his favorite fence was currently being attacked. Bad for business.

Hatori snuck up on the man, hired muscle by the infrared image he got of him, and gripped him in a bear hug. Before the muscle could even register what happened, Hatori struck down on him, piercing his neck to inject poison into the fool. Every time he struggled, Hatori's grip increased, till the man couldn't breathe. When he passed out, Hatori swallowed him whole. Snake men could digest quickly, and he had burned much more calories recently then he had taken in, so he could probably use a bit of extra fat. He wasn’t worried about any detrimental effects from diseases; snake men had a powerful immune system, necessary to prevent diseases due to the common cannibalism. Finishing devouring the man, Hatori spoke to the now recovered fence.

“You should be more careful. And you owe me now.”

The fence twitched; it’s not good to owe someone if you work on the underground. Too much chance it could get you killed. But realizing that it was Hatori, the man calmed down. Hatori had no use for favors, and would most likely ask for a discount next time he buys.

“All right Hatori, you can have a discount.”

“I need information.”

The fence twitched, mentally writing his will.

“Not now, but if anyone comes to you and you think that they are against Valcenz, you tell me. If you don’t and I found out you heard, then I will eat you.”

Hatori never understood the concept of lying to coushin a blow.

“Hatori… if Valcenz finds out, I could be killed.”

“Do you think I care?”

That was true. If there was something Hatori did not care about, it was other people. To put it simply, he was the most selfish person ever. He would do something that could help another, but he did it because gratitude has other rewards. Having people in high places owing you favors can save your life.

Casidey glanced at Laeris with a tight-lipped smirk for a moment after the older elf returned her volley. It had been a decent insult before he botched it up with his “recovery.” The fact that he had softened it to spare her feelings affronted her far more than any mere gibe could. Verbal fighting, even in jest, shared the same two basic rules as any kind of physical fight: 1.) Never throw a punch without being able to take one yourself and 2.) It’s inevitable that you’re going to get hit so expect it and make them pay. Casi followed the rules to the letter. Nevertheless, she was happy enough that she had gotten anything out of Laeris at all. Perhaps, she decided as she passed her cup over to Jakob, she would make it her personal vendetta to at least get a chuckle out of the stern soldier by the time their little cross-country trek was over and done with.

When their resident herbalist returned her dented mug she gave him an appreciative smile as she raised the concoction to her lips. Even though she wasn’t exactly a big tea drinker, Cas would readily admit that Jakob’s was among the best she had tasted. He seemed to have a gift for that sort of thing.

That was just about all that the thief had gleamed about him. He was odd to her. She had never really experienced anyone like him before and it made her a little more reserved towards him. The other two were much easier to decipher. Derek was a good ol’ boy, friendly and courteous with the ability to feel right at home with most any crowd. Laeris was your standard, battle hardened warrior who would much rather run a man through than have a leisurely chat. Casi had encountered both types enough times, even in the cesspits where she normally liked to linger and associate, to be able to have a good idea about them.

But Jakob was alien. He was aloof and constantly in some other realm that she apparently couldn’t glimpse. Mayhap he was just too deep for a girl who constantly wore her emotions pinned to the front of her shirt. She was, in fact, the only member of their little group that would willingly share her past. Tragic as they all might be, she supposed that hers was probably the least if she was so open about it. Casidey thought she was pretty well off, all things considered.

With one last swig Casi drained the rest of her tea and then stuffed her cup back into her pack in the most unorganized way she knew how; somehow it just always just seemed to work for her. She stood just after Jakob and brushed the dirt that she was sure had accumulated on the back of her pants off, careful not to swipe a hand over a one of her knives’ sharp edges. “You can keep your stories,” she told Jakob as she hopped once to readjust her bag’s shoulder straps into a more comfortable position, “I’d much rather have a bed and a good ale… or five.”

Five hours later they arrived at Canyon City. If you excluded the elf city, it was the most beautiful, sophisticated city of all Pangea. It was built into the Canyon, most of the buildings and streets were made out of solid rock and was smoothly polished from the many years of feet walking over it. Also because there were many large sandstorms that past through the area. The basic layout of the City was that the houses and buildings got progressively larger and taller as you walked deeper into the city, and in the center of the city was the largest market place you could ever imagine. Everything was sold there, from apples to zayglne, which was a type of pastry, and is only made in here. Most of the streets were long and narrow because this way if there was a raid, Valcenz soldiers would not be able to group together like they usually did to rob innocent people. This was probably the only city where people did not have to fear constant raids from the chess pieces, especially the bishops and knights. One of the great things about this city was, mostly everything was cheap to get, unless you wanted information. Information in this city was the most powerful thing you could have, it was also the most expensive and the most dangerous. However, because the city is so large, for transportation everyone used overlanders (kind of a crossbreed, long legs like an ostrage, no wings, two arms with three claws each, scales, and runs like a race horse, with a tail)
Derek looked upon the city with wonder. It felt great to be back again, he though as he gazed at the city with a small smile. He had spent most of his teenage life in Canyon City and knew most of the people here. He had always felt safe here for some reason, he never knew why though. He took a deep breath, taking in the fresh air. He shifted his pack, moving it to a more comfortable position on his shoulder.
"It is good to be back again. The inn is only ten minutes away, and we will all finally be able to sleep, and take a bath." Thinking that Laeris would enjoy being clean after ten days of walking in that dessert. He was eager to get to the inn and sleep but he knew that Hatori would be waiting for him when he got there. "Tomorrow will should stock up on supplies and get our weapons sharpened, I know a great blacksmith that works in the market."

Laeris simply strode on grimly, ignoring for the most part; the announcements of their leader. He was well traveled. It could probably be argued that he knew areas and such better than Derek, but Laeris chose not to voice such. He didn't really want to be the one responsible if anything happened to the group. That and he preferred to be the one on the sidelines. Let Derek have the attention. It'd be much better if the soldier could slip by unnoticed. Sometime during the walk, he had methodically stripped off his armor and packed it away, lest it be noticed for what it was; and he was now walking in simply shirt and breeches, with the shin high leather boots from earlier. And his sword was still belted on his hip. He wasn't willing to forfeit that out of sight just yet.

Part of him wished he had a good horse as the walls of the city engulfed their party. Horses would make travel so much easier... but he realized why he had forfeit his. A desert was no place for such a loyal mount and it would only cause more stress to try and keep it alive. But gods he missed having a good horse.

"I'll look for supplies once I get cleaned up," he offered. Not really one who felt like resting and relaxing just yet. Plus, his campaigning days had reminded him to take inventory of their stock on a daily - camp basis, so who better to restock their provisions?

He didn't mention anything about the blacksmith. He knew his sword would hold out just find. And he polished and took care of it so much on his own already, he partially feared what a blacksmith might do to it.

Somewhere along the way, the small stream like path they'd followed bound up into other such paths and created something near to a road which wended its way through the canyon, deeper and further from the sun. Jakob whistled as they had walked and he'd nodded to those they passed, a congenial bit of a nod which he might have offered anyone who passed him in his woodland home.

But in the city, there were no responses to his overtures not to mention had he continued to nod to anyone they passed, he would have given himself a neck ache, head bobbing like an idiot's. Instead, he'd satisfied himself with staring at the variety of faces which passed him, one after another. There were a multitude of expressions and lives in each one, written into the lines. Some had the hard, walled off sense he often found rising off of Casidey. Others ranged from fearful to tired to elated, busy, frustrated, late... each its own masterpiece.

He missed the covert looks their ragtag group brought on. He was far too lost in the bustle all about him. He smiled a frank smile and followed his troupe, bow slung over his shoulder alongside his tattered pack. Beside him walked a cold, silent man who radiated menace and chill, a girl who could very well have handled herself in any fight and was seen as such, and a young man who was so full of life that he broadcast it like a new lover.

Jakob jostled his way through with the same ease he'd have navigated deep brush, side stepping and captured in turn by sounds, noises, living presences. All the while, his mouth remained open and he appeared as if he might have broken into spontaneous laughter.

Derek, a hotel and cleaning, Laeris and his need to be on action, and Casidey? Jakob looked back at her. What would she do now that they were back in the city, a place she looked as if she had found herself once again in?

"I can help with gathering supplies if you'd like," he stated finally, looking back at Laeris. "Or if you'd rather go it alone, I might explore some. Never have been in a city before." His eyes swept the group and sparkled with boy like enthusiasm. This was a place he might easily get into trouble in, but what fun it would be to get himself out again. As much as he was sure the others wanted baths and such, he himself was fairly sure he could not settle so easily until he'd managed to drink in his fill of the environment which surrounded them, bursting with color and noise.

What a veritable buffet of unknowing targets, their coin purses ripe for the picking. Nobility, merchants, and other people with considerable wealth all gathered in close vicinity to each other with a seemingly endless supply of zen and amusement value. This, Casidey decided, was why she loved the city so much. There was always something for the curious sneak to stick their nose into. With only a one quick scan of the street she had fished out seven easy targets, just as many obvious pickpockets, two far more discrete thieves, and one bard that would tell much more than fairy tales for the right price. Cas smiled; she was going to enjoy their stay here.

As they delved further into the city it only became harder for her to keep her hands at her sides. One man even bumped into her, the small pouch of zen that hung off his belt grazing her arm. As tempting as it was to just snatch it up at that very instant Casi reined in the desire and continued to walk dutifully behind the others, granted a bit less spirited than before. She wouldn’t steal while with the others for several reasons. For one, she didn’t know how they would react. They all knew she thieved, but knowing it and seeing it were two completely different things. What if someone spotted her and took chase? What would the others do? It wasn’t a situation that she felt was fair to put them in. That wouldn’t, however, stop her from slipping away from the rest of the group to get her fix of impish fun.

She had stayed in Canyon City once before, about two years ago, for month and knew this side of the city fairly well. She couldn’t give directions to very many specific places, but she knew exactly which direction each street led, crossed other streets, and came to a dead end. The latter was far more important when attempting to escape and evade guards. The inn where she had stayed last time, the Crow’s Nest, she found after a little observation of her surroundings, wasn’t all that far away.

She supposed she would go back there for a visit, though after hearing what Laeris and Jakob planned to do she thought it might be worth her time to follow them. She couldn’t decide which would be a funnier picture: Laeris trying to hackle merchants and vendors at sword point, since he had an apparent lacking of social skills, or Jakob getting lost in the labyrinth of streets with every shady person in the city’s walls trying to take advantage of him because he was so obviously out of place in the populated area. Huh… it was a hard choice, but after a moment of debate she decided to go her own way. She didn’t want to be disappointed if the image she had in her head wasn’t nearly as funny as what ended up happening.

“And this is where I must bid you all farewell for now,” Casidey said with a stately bow after they came to the intersection she would turn on to make her way to the Nest, “I’ve a boon or two in which I would like to collect and a few people to visit who would be rather sad if they learned I was here and didn’t stop by and say ‘hello.’” Without giving the others anytime to object or comment she spun around on her heel and was engulfed by the mass of human traffic, disappearing almost instantly from the group’s sight. The effect was reminiscent of someone diving off the side a boat into the swirling waters of a stormy sea.

Derek watched as Casi was swallowed up into the sea of humans, barely hearing her as she waved them goodbye. She was most likely eager to do some exploring, and probably some stealing now that she was back in a city once again. He started off for the dragon's inn. Named so after the first earth dragon: Drakne. It wasn't the most popular, but they had good food and nice beds to sleep in; and one of the nice things about it was that no one knows where it is unless you have been there before. It was about fifteen minutes from the city entrance, on one of the side streets that can't be found if you don't know where to look. He looked up at the sign over the door, which had a great tan colored dragon spilling fire from his mouth. The door itself was decorated with intricate carvings, that created five creatures of myth: a dragon, pheonix gryphon, a Skybax, however the rest was faded with old age and he couldn't tell what the other two were. He turned the doornob, the door swung inward on oiled hinges, as he stepped across the threshold. Immediately, his nose picked up a multitude of smells coming from the many table that scattered the large circular room. His eyes gazed over as humans and scaleys talked, the soft rush of noise having sort of a calming effect.(scaleys: basicly raptors that can talk. It is a slang term used. their race are called carnasours) ) To the left he could see the stairs that led up to the bed rooms. On the back wall, right in the center was the bar, which was loaded with shelves filled with bottles of drinks that could make you drunk within two sips. He found an empty table and sat down in a chair that faced the door. All he had to do now was wait for Hatori. He wondered what the lizard has been doing all these years, most likely eating people..he never understood why he didn't just ask first before making threats, but there was no questioning how much info he got when he threatened people. He ordered a glass of water and a shot of dacvern(which is kind of beer with a firey spice). He stared down at the wood table and closed his eyes and pretended to sleep, all the while listening to the others conversations hoping to catch any new information about what was going on.

Laeris' eyes followed after Casi. He had little desire to leave her unattended in the city, for his concerns were much like her own, just from a different viewpoint. What if she got in trouble, or got caught? No doubt this party would be the one to pull her out of it, and he had little to no desire to fix up any mess she caused. That, and he hardly approved of her thieving ways. Then again, there was still little to nothing he could do about it.

His gaze then took in Derek's departure, though he didn't mind seeing that one go. Not that he didn't like Derek, but he was confident enough that he wouldn't have to barge in and save that one's hide any time soon. It definitely wasn't an issue of not liking any of the ones in their group, truly they all had their uses, and though he'd never admit to it, they did manage to brighten his gloomy countenance every once and a while. What did hamper Laeris' spirits and thoughts was how young they were. How inexperienced to him. Not that he was trying to be cocky, but look at the arsenal that the group had.

Casi. A young upstart of a girl who liked putting her hand into people's pockets and taking things that weren't hers. Well... at least they'd never be short of funds, even if it may not lawfully be theirs. Then there was Derek. Truly a nice guy, but a little too soft hearted for Laeris' preference. He seemed like the type of guy who would rather talk than fight. Which truly was an admirable quality, but not in this world. Then there was Jakob. Now, Laeris actually liked Jakob, but found that the gardener of sorts would probably be more useful as a hired hand then an addition to their mini army. He seemed a little too peaceful for the cause, and face it, garden trowels did not stand up to steel swords. Not that Laeris was the perfect cup of tea himself, which reminded him that tea had been excellent. He'd have to ask Jakob to stock up on the herbs for that one. But Laeris liked to think he had the experience and age under his belt. As well as a fighter's discipline and the years to master it. He knew there was a lot left for even him to hone to perfection, but he still felt like a better candidate than the rest of the troupe.

He flashed Jakob the slightest of smirks, which was really just the corner of his lip twitching up, and his gaze softening by a small bit. "Looks like it's just us left. Yea, I'd like you to come along. It would be better to have two minds taking care of the task. We can still look around if you want. There is no offense intended by my remark, but I'd rather have an eye kept on you... just in case you get lost. You don't seem to frequent places like this much."

He looked disdainfully then at his sand bleached boots, and travel worn clothing with a soft sigh. "I did want to clean up first, but I suppose that can wait. Work first, pleasure later." He finished under his breath before looking up and clapping a hand onto Jakob's shoulder. "Come on, let's start doing the real work hmm? We seem like the only two who are inclined to take care of it." And with that, he started forward into the crowd, though was damn sure he kept an eye and an ear open for Jakob.

[I know Laeris seems like a cocky jerk right now, but eh. He's a former soldier. He has every right to be XD]
