Drisk hudddled himself in one corner of the ruins, hunger and thirst having finally set in. His eyes drifted once again towards the Nexus, a small pillar set into the middle of the room. It was said in the rest of Arkoris that the Nexus took people away, made them dissappear never to be seen again. That was why these ruins had made the perfect hiding spot, the military wouldn't follow you in here no matter how bad your crime was. But Drisk had neither food or water, and the prospect of merely dissappearing was beginning to seem a lot better than the painful death that accompanied extremes of hunger and thirst.
And so, seeing no other option, Drisk put his hand on the Nexus, only half-expecting something to happen. So it came as a temporary shock when Drisk realized that he was suddenly surrounded by a darkness. This is it thought Drisk, I'm really dissappearing... He braced himself for the cold touch of death, readied himself to cease existing. So it was a huge surprise when Drisk found himself in the middle of a place which appeared to be a temple, incredibly similar to the ruins on his own world. Looking around, Drisk saw a white robed figure wacking toward him. He appeared to be smiling, and exclaimed "welcome to Aeolida! I'm a Greeter here, do you have any money to exchange?" Drisk shook his head slowly. This was really weird, was he dead? No, if money was used here it probably wasn't an afterlife. Emptying his pockets, the only things Drisk had on him were his sword, his gun, and the Rule Book of Arkoris. The... what was he called, a Greeter? Yeah, that was it. The Greeter looked at the Rule Book intensely. "Is that from your world?" ASked the Greeter. "Umm.. yeah" Drisk said coldly. Back on Arkoris, the punishment for not having the Rule Book on you at all times was death. "Is it worth anything?" Flipping through it, the Greeter took out what appeared to be a bag of some sort of money, and gave a pile to Drisk. "Now, I need to ask some questions. Are you a danger to anyone else here on Aeolida?" "Yes I am" Drisk said, "so don't piss me off." And before the Greeter could react, Drisk ran out of the temple, and continued running until he found himself in a city. Walking into what resembled an Inn on Arkoris, Drisk saw someone writing at a table. This person looked different from many of the other people in this odd place, so Drisk approached the man. Coldly, Drisk said "you don't look like most of the others at this place. What the hell is this place, and what did that Nexus thingy do to me?"

"It's taken you to a new world." The speaker was not the sitting man; rather another newcomer. He had been observing the seated man for quite some time. The man looked middle age, with stealthy clothes and wise eyes. He looked to be a person you would not mess with.
"Comes as a shock when you step through; most worlds don't know about their nexus. Some people think this place is the afterlife. But there's no chance in hell that I'll be dying any time soon. I've been 'ere a month, quite a nice place actually. Great for anyone who needs to... escape." He grinned. The sheer amount of weapons on his person suggested he was no friend to the law. "Deathdrinker's the name. Came here after hearing about it from a friend o' mine, a Dwarf. 'Scuse me a moment." He turned away from Drisk, tapping the other man on the shoulder. "Falco Leahcim, why do you seem to turn up everywhere I go?" he asked with mock disappointment. Falco had been Deathdrinker's friend for a long time; the only one in this world who knew his true name. But what was he doing in Aeolida? Last edited by Gavaroc Fevinor : 07-01-2008 at 12:24 AM. |

The surprised expression Falco had adopted when the white-haired man had barged into the Inn and immediately demanded answers of him turned to an expression of utter shock when Deathdrinker tapped him on the shoulder. Falco began to speak, found himself at a loss of words for a moment, then sighed and began again. "To be fair, it has been over a year since we last met, Deathdrinker. I followed a close friend through the Nexus on Syrith, but it seems he has already moved on. I do not believe you ever had the pleasure of meeting him, but I know a pair of wizard friends of yours who have. But this is beside the point. I am curious to know what brings you here, Deathdrinker. Somehow I doubt a man of your profession is simply taking a vacation. But before you answer..."
Falco turned his attention to the white haired man. "It is a testament to your inability to observe details around you if you have come to the conclusion that I somehow stand out amongst the denizens of this Inn. Take a look around you." The Inn was filled with various patrons of all walks of life. Numerous different races intermingled over food and drink. No one person specifically stood out amongst the crowd. Falco continued speaking in a patronizing tone. "Now then, since you obviously lack the ability to pick up on simple details, I will repeat what Deathdrinker has already stated and tell you that my name is Falco Leahcim. Care to tell us your name?"

It took Drisk several seconds to respond. He had a stunned expression on his face, the affect that Deathdrinker's news of being on a new world had on him. When he eventually dealt with the knowledge, an anger grew inside him at this Falco person who mocked him. Suppresing the urge to shoot him in the face, Drisk said as calmly as possible (though with still a hint of anger) "my name is Drisk Kayne. I'm from a world called Arkoris. It's not a good idea to piss me off-" Drisk was cut short as his stomach growled audibly, loud enough to drown out his voice. Well great, so much for showing what a monster I am. I'm sure this world has the same policy toward omnishifters as my own. But as long as I'm distant and angry enough, no one will discover what I am.

"Welcome back Keladry," the Greeter said warmly, offering his hand to the woman whom had just come through the Nexus before nodding a greeting to the large feline that stood casually at her side, "and you as well, Eango." She and her companion had been traveling back and forth to the temple for a good three years now, so it was not surprising that most, if not all, of the temple Greeters knew who they were. "Do you have any currency to exchange?"
Kel smiled and grasped the man's hand firmly in a quick handshake. "Yes," she said courteously and handed him a small pouch of gold coins, while her Ahalad-Kaaslane merely flicked his long tail. It wasn't exactly a fond greeting from the large cougar, but at least he had shown a little difference this time. Sadly, it was an improvement. Pumas weren't exactly the most social animals to begin with, and Eango didn't particularly like anyone other than Kel, not even other Blessed pairs. After being handed the appropriate amount back the two headed off into the city. Eango edged closer to his human counterpart's side to the point that his shoulder rubbed against her thigh as they walked together. Unconsciously she placed a hand on his back in a soothing manner, feeling his anxiety at being in Aeolida once again. "It is the Blessed Lady's will for us to travel here," she reminded him as they continued on their way into Middle City. A powerfully sharp, predatory voice entered her mind -Eango's voice- and stated a simple "Yes." And after that the cat calmed down considerably. They both knew well enough that the Amiya would not bid them to leave Kodu Riik if it were not for the betterment of the land and its people. The goddess loved and protected all of Her children and they were extensions of her will. At last they came to the Dragonfly Inn; it was Kel's favorite place to stay when stuck in Aeolida. She entered and strode directly to the bar. The middle-aged tender behind it smiled at her approach. "Kel, you're back!" he exclaimed and vaulted himself over the bar and then scooped her up into a hug, ignoring the low growl that emitted from Eango, "I was starting to get worried about you, saying you'd be back in a few days and then not showing up for weeks." The two had become good friends since the first time she had walked through the door. He'd taught her a lot about Aeolida and she had some interesting stories of her own. "Eango and I decided to stay home for a little while longer," she explained after wrenching herself from his grip, "But obviously we're back now." "Oh... and how are you ol' boy?" he said bringing his hand down to pat the two hundred pound cat on the head, only to be stopped dead in his tracks when Eango bared his impressive teeth in warning. He retracted his hand. "Right... well I'll scrounge you two up something and then maybe we can chat after everything in here dies down a little," he offered and then disappeared into the kitchen. Keladry shook her head a little in amusement and then sat down at a nearby empty table. Her Ahalad-Kaaslane took up his normal position stretched out on the floor by her side and, in that protective way of his, kept a discrete eye open to watch the people around his Ahalad-Kaaslane.

Falco grinned ever so slightly. He had found a nerve. "Drisk Kayne, was it? You seem so surprised to learn you are on another world. Perhaps you should have had a little patience and spoke to one of the Greeters before rushing out into the city. You seem to have a bit of culture shock. Maybe you should take the time to learn a little bit about this world. Ask that woman over there with the beast, see seems to be a resident. Besides, with that large cat following her around, I am sure she is already used to the purring," Falco said with a smirk, gesturing at Drisk's stomach.
Falco then turned his attention to Deathdrinker, all semblance of his grin forsaken for a very serious expression. "I would like to speak to you in private, Deathdrinker. It is very advantageous that we have met once again. I have another reason as to why I am here in Aeolida, one best not spoken in front of strangers."

Lander was propelled through the air and hit the cold stone of the temple floor. The first thing he noticed was that there was no longer any shooting or shouting. He heard several different voices speaking as he managed to pick himself up. He was covered in sand and dust from the desert, but the air here had suddenly become cool. He looked around and blinked. He was in a temple like the one he had been in before, except for being in ruins it looked whole and well-maintained. Then he saw something coming towards him, a large, insect-like winged creature. What the hell...I must be dying. That's it, he'd been shot and he was lying on the ground, delusional, as the blood drained from his body. It would all end in a few minutes.
Then the creature spoke in a language much like his own, except for a few words and phrases that he couldn't understand, but he got the gist of what was being said. "Welcome to Aeolida! This is very exciting, you see, no one has ever come out of that particular Nexus before. We thought it a dead world. You must tell us everything about it!" "Come again?" Lander replied. This must be some delusion, or maybe he was already dead. "Oh, I am sorry," the creature said, "Newcomers unfamiliar with the material plane are often confused, at first. To put it simply, you are on another world." Lander didn't know what to say, so he shrugged and just decided to go with the delusion, or whatever it was. Soon he would wake up, or die, or something. The large winged creature beckoned him to follow, and led him to a huge building which turned out to be a library. He was led into a room where a scribe was writing things in a large book, and they asked him several questions about the geography and history of Lyra, which he answered to the best of his ability. "Any questions of your own?" the insect-person said when they were done. "Yeah, when do I get to wake up?" The greeter shook his many-eyed head. "You still do not seem to understand. No matter, you will see for yourself." They handed him some kind of credit as 'payment' for his knowledge and led him out the door, fervently telling him to enjoy his stay in...Aeolida...or something. Maybe this is heaven, he thought. Or maybe it's hell. At least it's better than having a bullet in your brain. He walked off to explore the vast city. There were many strange inhabitants in this world, stranger than the deepest, darkest parts of Lyra. He soon found himself standing outside of an inn with a picture of a dragonfly on the front. He walked in and sat down at the bar. Looking at the other residents, and noticed a woman wearing a sword sitting at a table, dressed as though she was from the middle ages. At her side was a very fearsome looking big cat. "I really need a drink," Lander said to the bartender when he arrived from out of the kitchen. |

Drisk followed Falco's advice and walked up to the woman with the creature. It was an odd creature, and its fur and claws reminded Drisk of his berserker form, except for the creature's fur color and the fact that it appeared to be a quadruped, not a biped. It did look just as ready to kill as Drisk did in his berserker form, and so he made a mental note to himself to not make that thing angry.
Maintaning the cold, slightly angry voice he'd used when talking to Falco, Drisk said "this is my first time being on this.... what was it, another world? Anyway, the guy over there" Drisk pointed to Falco, "suggested I ask you about it, because you seem like you've been here awhile. What is this place like?" There Drisk stopped for a second as he remembered Arkoris, where there were over fifty crimes that resulted in the death penalty, where people like him were killed without benefit of trial or warning. "How strict are the laws around here?"

"Kanu shuwem zachen shya nao kiart arsaiash, niazhue?!" A forlorn complaint echoed in the Nexus structure on Haenayr. This particular structure was the only one left that was more or less wholly intact and enclosed. It also contained the highest concentration of Yaksa wardens than anywhere else on the planet. Their job was to maintain the sanctity of the temple compound that had been on the planet for longer than any Fey could remember and to make sure that any undesirables were kept from crossing. They also served an unofficial capacity of discouraging anyone from the other side from leaving the compound.
"You know I won’t answer you if you speak that language on these expeditions," came a heavily accented and rather stern reply. "Even if we haven’t even crossed the Threshold yet." "Why we are once again going to here?" Yoshe repeated her first question in the common tongue that all wardens had been forced to learn upon the Nexus’ activation and subsequent visitors from other worlds. Sadly, her command of the language was far behind that of her peers, and her accent was far less intelligible than the one that had answered her. "Because we are the group of wardens who have been chosen to explore the other side of the Nexus for the safety of our own world," was the school teacher-esque explanation from the expedition leader, Kokenshiu. Clearly, this was an explanation that had been given many times. Yoshe emitted a long, defeated sigh. She was very well aware of what her duty was. She just hated to leave home. Stealing one last glance out the crumbling archway to the forests just beyond the temple compound, Yoshe turned toward the Nexus and followed her party through. The all-too familiar sensation that could only be described as losing one’s solidity enveloped her, then there was a vague sense of velocity for several seconds, and then she appeared in the Nexus structure on Aeolida. Several Greeters were waiting; this was an expected arrival. One of the Greeters stepped forward and took a small, polite bow. "Welcome back, Yaksa Wardens," the man said as he straightened. "The currency that your courier brought through yesterday has been exchanged and all your accommodations have been taken care of. The currency is waiting for you at your hotel in Middle City." He bowed again. "Is there anything else we can help you with?" Kokenshiu ceremoniously declined the offer of further service, then gestured to the four other wardens to follow him. It was always impressive to Yoshe how much taller these human creatures were than her own kind. She stood only to the chest of most of the males. That difference in stature made Yoshe far more appreciative of her ability to fly, which most of the creatures that came to Aeolida seemed to lack, strangely. It was also odd how some of the other ‘guests’ that were not accustomed to seeing any kind of Fey would stare at Yoshe and the other female Yaksa in their party, Shinkei, usually with an odd sort of leering that made Yoshe uncomfortable in her own skin, which was typically quite visible. She’d once heard a female scold her male companion for "eyeballing the scantily-clad midgets with wings", whatever that meant. The ‘accommodations’ that had been arranged in advance by a courier consisted of a temporary rental of a room for the five Yaksa until Kokenshiu could decide what each of the five’s tasks would be over the next few days. A new meeting place would be decided upon; preferably outside of the city, which made the Yaksa less than comfortable. They preferred green forests. When Yoshe asked which place would be hosting them, Kokenshiu replied that it would be the same tavern that they’d stayed in on their last visit, the one with the picture that vaguely resembled a four-winged insect on Haenayr. The five Yaksa flew over the heads of the pedestrians on ground level–they’d learned from a rather serious set of injuries that trying to fly where the hovering machines were up above could be quite hazardous. Down at ground level, they were more or less unimpeded and not in any danger of a high speed collision. Hence, they made good time to the tavern with insect picture. Yoshe had yet to force herself to learn to read the language of this world, so the scratchy symbols beneath the picture were quite meaningless to her. The five fluttered down to the ground and entered the tavern on foot so as not to upset anyone inside. Somehow, land-bound creatures were easily startled when things that could fly did as was there nature, especially near entryways such as this one. Inside, Yoshe quickly took stock of the creatures that were present this time. Most of them were the human creatures that were the most common. One was a beast, quite large even by the standards of Haenayr, who sat at the feet of a female. Also near the female was a male who’s bearing was that of a beast who feared he may be cornered at any time. Another male was nearby. This one was covered in dust and looked somewhat confused. Overcome by curiosity, Yoshe said over her shoulder to Kokenshiu, "Tothe ishe kerai," (‘Be right back’) then hopped into the air and slowly fluttered over to land behind the one man who seemed to be waiting for something to attack him at any moment. Keeping a distance, Yoshe leaned forward and starting inspecting the man. There was a kind of magic around him that she could sense, but couldn’t place. Finished with her somewhat conspicuous inspection of the man, she gracefully hopped around him and leaned down to look at the large feline, still careful to not get too close. The beast was inspecting her, as well, and Yoshe could sense that it wasn’t in the best mood for being stared at. With innocent curiosity all over her face, Yoshe looked up at the woman at whose feet the beast sat. "This one yours is?" She asked, still bent over.
