Maple stood her ground, trying to say in the light. Just because she didn't mind becoming a vampire didn't mean that she wanted to be one. As the vampire jumped her she wrestled violently, trying to get that fighting ability that she was all too able. The thing was behind her, and it would only be a matter of time until she was out of the light and sharp fangs dug into her throat.
"Get offa me," Maple screamed as she quickly grabbed the vampire in the head and ducked down, causing it to fall to the ground in front of her. The thing got back up and took another charge, only to get a side-kick to the chest. It fell backwards and on the ground, within perfect shot for the watchmen's arrows. This wasn't Maple's first close encounter with the creature, and no terror was in her eyes as the vampire jumped her, or the scream of the guard that it was coming. It was all to familiar to Maple, and it didn't frighten her in the slightest.

Eric heard the commotion on the other side of the gate, muffled by the sound of thick stone and felt sure he was to late. As soon as his feet hit the ground he ran to the room where the crank was housed. It was located within the wall itself and was just feet from the ladder that he had just climbed down. Using the last of the adrenaline burning through his veins he puts his shoulder down and uses his momentum to burst through the thick door that blocked the entrance. Luckily enough for him it was unlocked or he probably would have more than a bruised shoulder for pulling a stunt like that. Once inside the room, which was nothing more than a small space housing the crank and an uncomfortable looking chair he could do nothing but gasp, "gate...open...now," as he struggled to catch his breath one hand clutching at his chest.
The guard assigned to the controls, a heavyset, nervous looking man who was already flustered by the appearance of the vampires and the shouting from outside (not to mention the choice he had about opening the gates) had been frightened nearly to death by Eric's sudden appearance. He was only to happy that the decision was being made for him and he moved with surprising agility for someone of his girth in complying. With a heave the man began turning the crank. Just as sweat began to dot his forehead the giant chains had wound tight enough to heave the giant piece of timber into the air accompanied by the sound of straining wood. By now Eric could breathe again so he jogged outside to get the gates open just in time to hear Sara call down to him. He didn't reply, assuming actions would be louder than words and put his shoulder to the first gate he came to and pushed it open wide enough to allow him, and another to get through. He was anxious to see how the girl in the green t-shirt had fared in what seemed to his mind the eternity to get the gates open. The people who had constructed them were masters of their crafts and the gates were hinged so perfectly a single person was able to open them with some effort. But that didn't mean Eric wasn't stung when he abused his already bruised flesh. His grimace of pain was soon replaced with a grin that split his face from ear to ear as he saw the aftermath of what had taken place and a very whole looking girl. Hurriedly, because Eric was sure he could just make out further movement in the trees before his night vision was shattered by the beam of light again, he rushes to the girls side and offers her his hand. He had been expecting to have to scoop her body up and make a run with it back inside the gates. That she was still on her feet was a nice surprise. Judging by the arrow jutting from the vampire's skull, she had Sara to thank largely for that. But Eric saw no fear in the girl's eyes either and going by the proximity of the body, it was probably a combination of the two of them that did it in. He wanted to tell her how glad he was to see her alive, and that she did a good job, but all that came out was, "We should hurry." With that, he nodded his head towards the gates and began tugging her to the gap he had made. He did have the foresight to shout up at the wall cupping his free hand over his mouth to amplify his words, "Make sure the operator locks up behind us!"

Sara lowered her bow as she turned to Bane, "Watch the wall while I make sure the gate gets locked." she says as she run a hand over the thick fur on her head. Bane snorts at her then goes to stand at the wall ears up and alert, he would bark if he saw or smelled anything not human. Satisfied that her post was in good hands Sara grabbed her gear and then climbed down the ladder and ran for the control shack, seeing Eric and Maple enter just as she passed the threshold. "Well you heard the man. Shut those doors." she said to him with a smile as he rushed to do as he was told, sweat so thick on is brow he look like he was about ready to try and squeeze through the key hole on the door. The man began to reverse the direction of the crank slowly lowering the giant timber back into its place, while two others grabbed the massive doors and were pulling them closed so that the lock could be placed.
The sound of metal grinding and wood straining filled her ears as she watched to make sure all was locked up nice and tight. There was an solid echoing sound as the gate shut, filling the silence that had come following the excitment on the wall. Or maybe it had been just her imagination that amplified every sound during those moments on the wall, all she could really remember hearing was the sound of her own racing heart as she took aim at the first one in the trees. She gave a mental shrug and decided to forget about it for the moment and instead went outside to meet Eric and Maple, "Everyone all good?" she asked with a smile glad to see Maple unharmed and as far as she could tell unmarked as well. |

Maple desided, as she could see more vampires in the trees, and none of them appeared to be of the 'cured' variaty, to take the offer of the gate guards and quickly ran out of the UV light and through the opened gate, racing as fast as she could towards to the gate guard and his screaming voice.
She could think of nothing except how she was able to train herself to be strong enough to fend for herself. She was thinking of the close-calls that she had experienced with those hungry vampires and other hungry creatures that roamed the wood. Again she would be in Sacrifice, another oxy-moron that she found mildly amusing. She found herself standing next to the gate guard from earlier. Now closer she realized how attractive he was: tall with red hair and brown eyes. She gave him a smile, at first it was a warm 'Thank you' smile, which then morphed into a more mischevious grin, as if she was looking at the incident with a bit of humour.

Eric ran back to Sacrifice with the girl.Once they made it safely inside, the other gaurds closing the gates behind them, he waited until he heard the resounding 'thunk' that signified that they had been locked again to remember to breathe. Gasping in lungfulls of crisp air he leaned against the gate, letting his pulse slow down before trying to make the effort to do anything else. As the tension from the nights events began to uncoil, he turned to look over the girl. He saw her grateful smile and nodded his head in acknowledgement, as if to say, "Anytime." Giving her the once over he was able to tell two things: One, she seeemed unharmed and two, looked like she was enjoying herself.
He gave her an accusing stare and shook his head. Not quite sure what to do, he was about to launch into a long winded lecture about how she could have gotten them all killed, when instead, the girls smile infected him and he couldn't help but laugh. The sound burst from him in loud peals and left him clutching his sides but free from the tension his body had built up in the excitement of the night just as Sara approached them. Quickly regaining his composure he smiled at her and nodded. "It looks like we're good here, thanks to your bowmanship." He scratched the hair on the back of his head and turned to the other girl. "What were you doing out there anyway?" His usual reticence was countered by his curiousity. He had never met anyone who relished the thought of being outside the walls at night.

Maple looked at the man as he asked her how she got outside. Not surprised at his worried tone, she answered simply with "I was out on a hike and lost track of time."
Now, Maple speaks the truth and her expression is a honest one, even if looking amused. It wasn't the first time she was outside, nor would it be the last, and the night never scared her in the slightest. The vampires had never worried her, like they worried the people in the town: to the point when they shut themselve in the walls every night. Constrictive in her opinion. Fearless in her actions, maybe even reckless, but nevertheless she was not a frightened victim.

Sara smiled at his comment, she knew she was good with her bow but it was always nice to hear it once in a while. She checked her watch, and to her surprise quite a bit of time had passed during all the excitment on the wall. "It would seem that we only have about another two hours left in our shift. If you want I'll cover your spot on the wall too, that way you can take Maple to get checked out and cleared before all of the officials get involved." she offers Eric with a smile as she lays her bow casually on her shoulder as she waits to hear his answer. With all the adrenaline pumping in her system she was in no worry of falling asleep, plus when the sun began to rise she was going to go out and see if she couldn't get a closer look at one of the ones she had killed.Maybe she could figure out why they had come so close to the city walls, knowing that there were guards posted it was just suicide to do so. And Maple was the only one to go out after dark so its not like they were looking to catch a large group of them as a meal. On a more business note she could retrieve her arrows too, which was always a bonus given the scarcity of supplies, this would save her time from having to make more.

Eric watched the operator huff back to his post at the gate controls. It wasn't likely that he would be rushing off to the "powers that be" any time soon. Quite a few rules were broken during the night and he was sure the man didn't want to have to explain HIS involvement in the whole thing. He was just as sure of that as he was that they would find out. One of the other watchers would tell them, or perhaps a villager. He was sure they had made enough noise to wake the whole of them. It was only a matter of time. The less he had to answer for later, the better. He turned to Sara just as she finished speaking to him and he nodded. Grateful he flashed her a smile and started down the path that led to the doctor's house.
He was to tired for conversation and without the adrenaline running through his system he was hurting more than he realised. Walking with maple in silence he led her to the doc's house and saw her inside before he started for his parent's. He would have gone back to the scrounger's guild but he wasn't in the mood, and it wouldn't due to be seen away from his post anyway so instead he went there, deciding vaugely that he would work on his moto-cycle. When he arrived he let himself in through the back door, which was never locked, and tiptoed on into what used to be his room. He spent the next couple of hours tinkering with sparkplugs and gauges, though what he was really doing was thinking. He kept going over the events of the night in his head and he just couldn't think of a logical reason for the cured to be there. The smart ones had to know it was suicide, and the dumb ones had long ago learned to keep to the edges of the wood. Unsatisfied with his lack of answers Eric growled and looked out the window. The sun was just rising. Wiping away the sweat that had been slowly working it's way from his hairline down his forehead he scrubbed momentarily at his hands with one of the rags lying around the room and walked into the kitchen, unaware that he had left a large dark smudge in it's place. Rummaging through the cabinets his father had built himself, Eric grabbed a few utensils and quietly left the house again. If he had timed it right, he should have just enough time to grab some food and meet Sara for shift change. Feeding her was the least he could do for covering the last of his shift.

Sara stretched and yawned as the end of her shift came. It was uneventful as she had thought it would be, though there had been some movement on and off all night, nothing to warrent even noting in her guard log. So she had spent sometime staring at the dead vampire her keen vision analyzing and taking in as much detail as possible from her current distance. Bane gave a huff from beside her "Yep boy. That's it for us, let's get down from here and see if we can't get our arrows back." To this Bane gave an excited bark and a wag of his tail, patting his head and scratching behind his ears she went to collect their gear.
Sara's feet had just set foot on the ground again and was about to head to the pully that would let her lower Bane down when she was jerked around by the shoulder. Her annoyed gaze fell upon Eric's relief, a punny rat of a man whose black beady eyes gave him his unspoken nickname. Sara could never remember his name nor did she care to make an effort in trying to learn it. Instead she placed her hands casually on her hips and looked him up and down as if to size him up; trying to see if she could toss him over the wall. "Where is Eric? Does he not realize that leaving his post is a serious crime? And he could find himself in a lot of trouble?" at about this point Sara's hands went from her waist to her sides balled up in fists. The thought of trying out her own rendition of a human javolin was on her mind, when she caught sight of Eric approaching and a smile came to her lips."For your information he had only just left to get us a bite to eat. Had you a bit more patience or perhaps a bit of common sense, then you would have thought this out a bit and come to the same conclusion. Instead of violating my personal bubble and keeping me from getting a very hungry, tired and now slightly pissed dog down from the wall." Almost as if on que a large menecing snarl came from above them, Bane's fangs gleaming in the coming dawn light. The rat man gave a visible gulp before backing away from Sara, who turned and went about lowering Bane to the ground. Once on the ground Bane went and chased the man up the ladder before running over to circle happily around Eric as he approached. "Perfect timing. You just saved that poor man from an unscheduled flight." she chuckled,"And you brought food which makes both Bane and I happy. What do you say for a bit of hunting and exploring after we eat?" |
