Restored OOC {Lost & Kate}

We discussed you playing a Mage and myself playing a necromancer. We began our trainings and teaching together as adolescence, but I moved onto darker arts, namely necromancy and took on another master. That might be a point of contention for us... we could use that pivotal moment of me leaving as a break in our relationship/friendship - whatever we determine we originally had.

What we need to discuss or really lock down might be why we are coming back together. Is there a war of sorts? Or is there a journey that we must go on together to save mankind or magic itself and in searching for the objects/book (what have you) we really discover each other all over again?

We can start working through this as well.

I enjoying learning about my partners character IC and making my plays more reactionary rather than planned out as if writing a novel. Forms of Magic

I would love to work on our history's together, at least for the beginning when they were still together. After that of course we would have rights to what ever we want, as we each went our separate ways. As for the magic, I think it should depend on what type of magic is used. For example I am planning on my character using magic of the mind, telekinesis, levitation, eventually mental domination, etc, and as such his magic would drain him mentally, and over years of using it start damaging his sanity.

Very interesting. I like that. I am going to make my necromancer obvious have the ability to raise and control the dead, but she will be based in elemental magic - movement of the elements, the wind being her strongest ally. I would have her physically suffer at the use of her elements - her blood being a requirement... making her beautiful skin inlaid with healed pencil thin scars from cracks in her skin due to her magic. They'd not be obvious unless someone was close enough to see than and even then, she'd have to be in the throws of emotion for them to color her alabaster skin with their crimson color.

As far as history... we could split the world and have a certain area that all 12 year olds are sent for training in their abilities... we could both have been sent there, make quick friends out of each other. We could or could've have had romantic inclinations with one another and then we could have one of our other friends start a movement out of the students - when we were around 17-18 and she went with him. Wanting the ability to control her powers and reach into the boundaries of life and death - he promised that and she believed it. You wouldn't go (for what reason?) and we had an epic fight, perhaps even using our magic against each other (which is forbidden) and scaring each other a little as we parted.

Thoughts, baby?

I like the physical scarring due to your use of magic, as the elements take place in the physical world, and to 'mortals' necromancery would be seen as an abomination of nature, which would connect well with the physical damage as well. One question upon your necromancery, would you only able to summon physical entities, or would you also be capable of summoning spirits of the departed? It doesn't matter much, just a mere curiosity.

As for the history I love it. Rather than a certain area though, perhaps it would be more of a force thing. If a child shows any magical talent, they are taken, with or without the parents consent, to the school. While in the magic community at large necromancers wouldn't be against the law, perhaps it would be a restricted within the school, as the teachers don't believe that the students could handle it at their age. These are just my ideas love, and I would love to hear your opinion on them.

If enrollment were to be forced, it would give reason to the friend of our characters to rise up and start his necro magic movement, as a way of getting back at his suppressors. As for my own characters reasons for not joining, his mind had already become set on the art of psychic abilities. However he could not handle losing your character, and tried convincing her to stay with him. Overestimating his skills, he could have tried forcing her with his own magic, leading to their fight and separation. More than likely there would be more emotional scars on the pair, rather than physical as they would have been around equals in skill. As for the romantic feelings, I think they should have been kindled within both of them, but neither made it apparent to the other, and by the time he was getting ready to, your character was already being persuaded to leave.

No, it's good that you're asking questions. I rarely play with magic in my Rp's... so help me flesh her out a bit.

What do you mean about physical entities vs. spirits? I would assume she would only be able to raise the dead that had a body (of any shape or sort) to use for their spirit returning, so I'd say Physical if I am understanding the question properly.

I like that. The idea of forced attendance would give an even greater reason behind some of them wanting to leave, the feeling that they didn't want to be there in the first place and the idea of "controlling" their magic or being told to control it or reign it in in any way would cause contention. I think we should have the school and society at large put a negative connotation on the idea of necromancy. I think I'm going to have her pull away from this guy (that she left with) when he starts to use it for nefarious purposes. She will use it to assist in police investigations and such, calling the dead back to gain a better understanding of their murders or something they might have seen...

We can use him (the guy she left with) as a villain somewhere in the RP.

Very nice. So we would both be left wondering about unspoken feelings. I would assume my character would've been furious with yours for taking to man-handle me (with magic) and left with hurt buried in her heart from that alone. That's a nice history to have to break through...

Are we ready to start working through the plot or reasoning for getting us back together?

When I think of necromancery I break it into two main components, although they can be combined in ways that break down the magic even further. The first is reanimating a deceased individual in the form of a mindless puppet, giving you complete control of their actions. The second is bringing back only the spirit of someone, perhaps from centuries past that no longer have a physical shell even buried in the ground. These two can be melded together to return a spirit back to their previous body, or another suitable host, however it is much more difficult to control them at this point as they not only have their mind, they also have a body. That is why I asked my question, I have always been fascinated with magic, and have broken down several forms of it into components that I believe would be the building blocks of each school of magic.

The main reason I said the magic society at large would not frown upon it, is connected to what I brought up in PM. I do not think that any form of magic should be classified as 'evil' nor 'good', at least not to magic users. However if an individual is using magic for a purpose rather than gaining knowledge, for example jeopardizing an entire kingdom or even town for no reason other than to do it, it would be looked down upon and more importantly it would be considered a threat that would need to be dealt with.

I think it would be an excellent idea to use him as either a main antagonist, or even just a branch of it. There would be a personally dilemma for them to overcome, having to follow through with getting rid of the threat, while knowing the threat use to be a friend of theirs.

And although your character would have only been acting in self defense, mine would feel betrayed due to her siding with the other friend in the first place, and almost believe that his hand been forced into trying to man-handle her.

I do believe we are ready to begin building the plot itself. The first order of business, now that our history is mainly meshed out, is what setting do we want this in? Along with if only humans and magic users should be present.

Good. Your studies and understanding of magic will help to color the school and underlying elements of our RP. I'm thinking that for me, necromancy as I will be pushing it across the RP will be in terms of her raising the recently deceased that will in fact have a body buried in the ground. She will use magic and a sacrifice of sorts to have them come back as a functioning zombie, under her command, but having the ability to use their mental capacity (believing themselves alive) for only a short period so that she is able to extract information from them.

Touche. I agree that perhaps the magic community might not place a negative connotation on necromancy, but society would. Are we going to have a situation where magic is a tight-kept secret, or known and used widely in the bogs of community? As if being a mage were like being a blacksmith or baker?

Speaking of - for the setting, what time frame are we thinking? Modern? Future? Past? I like the idea of having it set in the times of carriages and candle light. No modern technology of any sort.

He could even possibly be your characters brother if we wanted to add another level of emotional drama? We should start the RP with both of us believing he (Marcus will be his name) is dead. Having him show up later would be pretty cool. We could even have her go to his grave to raise him for some reason or another later in the RP and he's not there.. creepy. :P

I wouldn't call it understanding, more so interpretation. I apply modern logic, to fantasy elements. It is a past time of mine actually. There is just something thrilling about making fantasy setting become more realistic/believable by giving them foundation in reality. I am perfectly fine with that being the usage of necromancery in our RP, as it would also give a reason for your character to have elemental magics on her side as well, giving her offensive magic to defend herself with.

That is what I was aiming for, society frowning upon necromancers as abominations, while the magic community at large doesn't judge them for their choice of magic, only their choices of how they use it. Also I do believe that it should not be tightly kept, however not everyone is capable of it, actually very few are, and those who are able don't offer their services very willingly, unless there is something for them in it as well. This again is just my opinion.

Carriages and candle light fit perfectly with what I would love the time period to be, long before science evolves to replace magic.

Rather than blood brother, perhaps brothers in bond? Joining together as they were both forced to join, however Marcus kept his rage and allowed it to fester, while my character learned to let his go. It would provide the same emotional turmoil, and it would also add to the betrayal he feels at your character going with Marcus, in essence losing both of his closest friends. And I love your idea of trying to raise him, only to discover there is no body. Would that be during the RP, or prior to it?

Makes it more real and perhaps allows us to hope for or reach for something slightly beyond ourselves or monotony as it were. You'll have to give me a quick write up on magic and/or types of for our OP up there. :)

Yes... I love that. I like your opinion. Very few of us and our unwillingness to give of our services allows us to be a precious commodity that people want and most fear. Of course that will put a negative spin on ALL of us because of how society is when its not allowed free access to something. It becomes something that is feared and oftentimes hunted. (Witch trials... Frankenstein... yadda yadda...)

Sounds great. Have the three of them be close friends. I like the emotional movements of Marcus vs your character.

I think if we are looking for a certain book or trinket (that we still need to discern) then we could use that event to say that the only person we were aware of that knew for sure where it was (the book) was Marcus. As such, I'd raise him from the dead so that we could question his knowledge... but he's not there when we try. It would be later - much later IC.

Before I could do that, I would need to know exactly how detailed you want all of the magics, and if you only want basic magics included, or a few that I have semi created on my own.

Well of course, I enjoy the idea of a negative outlook, it makes things more challenging. For example in regular society we would be treated very similar to how African American's were between the end of the Civil War, and the 1960's. There would be exceptions of course, magic users of high fame, and those who seek to aid the regular people.

Between those times would be fine, which leads into the next question. Do we want this to take place in our world, although minor tweaks here and there of course, or a completely unique world?

Another thing that I must ask, what age are our characters now? And were we all introduced to the school the same year? Or should we be a year or so apart?

Perhaps for the start of the plot, both of us are recalled to the school, which also serves as the headquarters for the magical community, and asked to assist in a war that has been waging for years. In essence it would be a civil war between the mages. Those who think that we should overthrow the normal humans, and those who believe we must preserve the old way of seeking knowledge and nothing more. During this we would be assigned to work together (Depending on our age we will either be masters of our magics, or experts.) and as such give our characters a reason to join together. How does that sound so far?
