Destiny's Love: Chapter One

The Raylinor Continent, a vast land where the humans lived mostly. It was a grand world filled with opportunity. Wanderers would travel the lands, further reaching out into the world of Raylinor, building large communities to settle upon and make a life for themselves. Small towns sprout up fast over the early years of this world and flourished. But as more time past, eventually new species began to roam the lands, coexisting with the humans. Elves, dwarfs, wooland folk and centaurs began to inhabit the far edges of the continent, deep in the underground, and even in the sky and sea. Peace had become a need as this races began to incorporate into each other. But the centaurs denied peace. They wanted power and they wanted to rule the land, and to flush out all of the non centaur impurities. Mainly the humans, that they believed were weak and ignorant and unfit to rule the continent that they had founded. And so war happened, and humans took up arms to fend off against the powerful centaurs who stampeded like beasts into their settlements and killed anyone with less than four legs. The Raylinor Kingdom retaliated with a army counting in the thousands, as elite knights rushed through the scarred battlefields that had once been beautiful traveling grounds. The knights fought against the centaurs with their steel. And with the help of the elvish folk who had taught and provided them with the necessities of magic, they enchanted their blades and armor to push back the centaur horde and claim more than half of the Raylinor Continent. That was how it had been in the past. Today, normal people lived in a state of peace, no longer worrying about war. The battle has been driven back to the borders between the human kingdom and the centaur empire. The elite guard would patrol the edges of the vast travel lands and also the main castle town of Destiny's Edge, the center of Raylinor, the king's capital.

Joshua road as fast as he could on horseback across the vast fields headed toward Destiny's Edge, a message clenched in his hand as he dashed toward the great fort like city far off in the distance. He had been sent there on order to inform the king, that a small group of centaurs led by rogue humans had managed to infiltrate Raylinor. And they were planning on making there way into Destiny's Edge. The king and his family were in danger, and Joshua had to warn them and the castle guard. He narrowed down the distance from him and the castle town as he flailed his arm in the air, the wrapped up message in hand as he yelled towards the northern gate's guard.

"Message from the front lines, I must see the king at once!"

The northern guard quickly opened the gate, shutting it just as he made it through. I sighed softly, standing on the small balcony that looked over the village that the castle was surrounded by. "Why don't you come inside?" My father, the king, asked from behind me. My mother was of course standing by his side. "I'm fine." I said softly without looking back at them. I swallowed hard, I was worried. The war had been calm, but we knew they were planning something big, very big. I was worried about Joshua, he was on the front lines. I couldn't really write him, my parents would know there was something going on then.

I leaned against the railing, hearing my parents walk back inside the dining area. I looked down, brushing my hair behind my ear. I was not sure how to hide my emotions if he returned or he didn't come back at all. But that wasn't going to happen, I shook my head and looked up from the village to the sky. The centaurs had never gotten anywhere near here yet. And with as strong as the kingdoms army was, they wouldn't get here.

Joshua rushed down the castle town streets, nobles stumbling out the way of his path as he darted toward the center of the city. It was enormous, and time was running short. His horse stopped just outside of the outer gates where castle guards lined up all over. Joshua held up the message with the army seal on it.

"I have a message from the front lines! The king and his family are in danger! We just found out about a secret way that centaurs spies have been tunneling underneath the castle. They could be inside the castle this very moment. We have to find them!"

Joshua jumped off his horse and ran down past the guards towards the front entrance of the castle. He unsheathed his blade as a group of soldiers followed behind him, headed for the main throne room to search for the royal family.

"Hurry! We have to get to them before the enemy has a chance!"

I looked down, completely shocked at what I saw...or thought I saw. Was that Joshua? I turned around and froze dead in my tracks. A centaur was standing in the doorway, my parents must be in the throne room. I couldn't help myself but to scream. I knew someone had to have heard me, because if they didn't. I was dead. But...how did it get in here? I swallowed hard and starred at the ground, I was terrified. I looked up as it took a step forward, I took a step back, but then realized I couldn't back up anymore than I already had. Now I could only go left or right and be stuck in a corner.

Joshua and the others rushed into the main hall headed for one of the tower staircases when a scream echoed throughout the castle. Joshua's eyes widened as his body unconsciously lunged for the stairs faster then the other soldiers.

"Princess!" He yelled out rushing up the stairs towards where he heard the scream.

The other soldiers called out to him. He yelled back down to them to find the king and queen. Faster he ran up to the tower until he reached the level where he had heard Princess Morgan scream. Nothing mattered at that moment except for saving her. He ran down the hall and kicked open the door to the room were all the noise had come from, his sword grasped tightly in hand as he rushed in.

"Princess!"

I looked at the door as Joshua came in. I was speechless. I swallowed hard and looked away from him and back to the centaur that continued closer. How easy was it going to be for them to just shove me over the small wall? I was terrified and shaking. Where my parents were and if they were okay I had no clue. How'd they get here? I would have been happy if it was just Joshua coming home by surprise. But not like this, this was not good, not at all. I was breath heavy, I couldn't calm down, not now at least.

Joshua rushed over and pointed his sword toward the centaurs. He gritted his teeth, clenching the blade tightly in hand ready to lunge at the enemies. A human spy tried to sneak up behind him and attack, but was quickly dispatched as Joshua blocked his short blade and cut him from shoulder to waist sending his limp body down in an instant.

"Do not underestimate me!" He bellowed out pointed his blade back at the centaurs. "I am an elite soldier straight from the borders! Now get away from Princess Morgan!"

The centaur closest to Morgan huffed and laughed with a low raspy wheeze as he scooped the princess up with ease and without any bit of hesitation, leaped from the balcony. There were two others in the room with him. The first charged at him as he swung his blade back and forth at him, deflecting a nasty attack from his crudely make spiked mace. His shot forward and drove his sword into the centaur's chest. The centaur fell to it's sight and it's companion aimed his bow at Joshua and shot an arrow, grazing his iron spaulder. He defected a second arrow his sword and leaped up in the air slicing downward and plunging the sharp edge of his blade down into the last centaur's shoulder. It hit the ground and Joshua rushed to the balcony just to see the centaur disappear into a trap door covered with grass in the yard of the castle.

"Princess!"

I should have known better! I should have seen it coming! When he jumped off the balcony. I closed my eyes, fearing that he would drop me before looking for my parents. I tried my best to fight back, but it was a lost cause. He was much stronger than I was. All Joshua had been doing was trying to protect me, and I could have stepped away from the centaur but I hadn't! And now I was stuck being a hostage to them! I knew now that even if I did get loose, I wouldn't be able to get the trap door open.

I would have to trust the fact that Joshua had seen and remembered where the trap door was in order to get me out of here. I'd heard him yell princess once more, but it was cut short as the trap door closed. What did they even want with me? My parents wouldn't give them any land for me. Money, sure, my parents would give them money. But when the war began, I made them promise to me that they would never give away the kingdoms land in order to get me back.

Then, when I got with Joshua, I knew that if something like this happened, he wasn't going to give up on it nor would he quit looking. I sighed softly, I couldn't believe this happened to me! What had I done to deserve this? And to think Joshua had just come back from the front lines! For the first time in months, I'd be able to see him again, and I'd just been ripped away from him! I just wanted to cry! I hadn't been able to talk to him, I swallowed hard, holding the tears back now.

Joshua leaned over the edge of the balcony, desperate to get to her as soon as possible. His eye caught the sight of a rope pulley close to the balcony. Joshua took a deep breath and lunged off the edge reaching for the rope as he slid down the wall to the ground, tumbling to his feet as he made a mad dash toward the spot he had seen the centaur go. A bright burst of light exploded from the trapdoor ripping dirt from the ground as Joshua was blown back. Fire trailed underground as soil caved into the hole of the hidden tunnel. Other soldiers rushed out of the castle. A few helped Joshua to his feet as he watch the fire scorch the topsoil in the yard.

"Dammit. We don't have time to dig through this! The Princess has been kidnapped!"

One of the soldiers dragged a centaur spy over into the yard. "We have one of them alive! He can tell us where the centaur camp is!"

Joshua walked over to the spy and grabbed his collar slamming him against the wall of one of the small structures in the yard closest to the caved in tunnel.

"You're going to lead me to where they went with the princess, now!"

He tied the spy up and threw him on top of his horse, jumping on as he rushed out through the castle gates and soon through the outer walls. Six other soldiers followed behind him on horseback as they ran along the outside of the kingdom's walls in the direction towards the centaur camp. The frightened spy screamed and cried to Joshua where to go, hoping to not be killed at their destination. Joshua smacked him hard across the back of his head.

"You will lead us to the exact spot where they took her, or I will end you slowly and painfully!"

The spy yelled. "Okay, okay! It's in that direction!" He replied nearly hanging off of the horse, pointing northwest.
