Tanks For The Memories (puntastic. But yeah, TANKS!)

Hey all.

I know there's been a lot of Special Forces RP's making the rounds on the board at the moment, most likely because of MoH: Warfighter and Blops 2. However, I was thinking about giving the steel beasts a run out of their cage.

I had in mind a game involving playing the crews and operators of modern MBTs, light armoured vehicles, APC's and the like, involved in some kind of large-scale conflict.

I would imagine the setting to be an alternate timeline to our own, to justify the large-scale combat we could encounter, and allow for some near-future gadgetry to be involved to a certain degree.
It would not be a competitive 'each playing a different side' type game, but more working together as part of a multi-national group, against a common threat.
As I often do, there would be some elements of sci-fi in there, but nothing like aliens or anything too far out, just things to justify a large-scale threat, and to unify against, and to create an interesting mysterious element to the plot.

Can I just ask; do you know what a JTAC is?

Which I also recommend, WW2 tank warfare was waaaay easier to comprehend. At least for me. Doesn't really matter too either.

Yeah, a JTAC is similar in concept to a ground-based forward air controller. They direct CAS and other air assets onto a target, and report the outcome of an airstrike.

Don't see why not, you could be attached to a Stryker or something, that way you get to join in on multiple levels.

Yeah, I wanted to do something similar, but with a slightly smaller scale for the player characters, rather than commanding companies or units of vehicles. I'm still working out in my head how I'm going to manage that.
Perhaps some kind of raiding unit, or force. Or it just ends up that way by accident.

I do get your point, but I don't really find WW2 tanks as interesting as modern ones, sadly. I'm well aware of their great history and such, but I'm far more interested and knowledgable about modern equipment and vehicles, simply because they're more to my interest.

The idea will indeed be several nations combined fighting together against a common foe, or foes.
My current ideas revolve around some kind of African/Middle Eastern power rising in an alternate timeline, probably the late 1990's, and leading to a wide-spread conflict in the early 21st century.
If I get a couple more people, I'll get working on an OOC tomorrow.

How far into this war are we looking? I could see some countries possibly specializing their vehicles in certain ways. Like primary MBTs getting additional armor packages, provide anti-missile systems, etc. While other countries might take their lighter MBTs (Anything that can't take a hit...less than 35 tons basically), and adapting them a bit more to scouting, flanking, fast interdiction tactics to support heavier, less mobile MBTs.

Partly the reason I ask....is I am looking at the Argentine TAM 30 ton MBT which has a maximum protection on its frontal arc from 30mm AP ammunition. It just is never going to do stop a 105 or 120mm APDSFS or HEAT shell, unless they get a glancing hit. But I look at it and I can just imagine it having a telescoping mast akin to the Canadian Recce Coyote, and with its 45 mph capability....I am kinda drooling.

I was planning on allowing everyone to make a limited number of appropriate modifications to their mount, just so as to give them a bit more individuality and character, something like 3-4 things each, with the potential for more later on.
As I said in the OP, perhaps a little bit of near-future tech, and what's available could be expanded upon by the outcome of various missions and other actions in the game.

Things would be already kicked off by the time we start, so that we'd already have seen significant combat of some kind - I can elaborate more in the OOC, and lay down some history there.
