I dont know about Sword of the Stranger but i would recommend the studio ghibli films to anyone. It's a great introduction to anime. c:
http://myanimelist.net/ is a great site to keep track of anime you watched as well as see reviews and recommendations for other series.
Im not a huge fan of anime myself. But if the story is compelling enough ill watch anything
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gungrave, Cowboy Bebop, Steamboy, Akira, and Trigun.
Those are great, I'd highly recommend Gungrave.
Dunno many anime movies, but if you want a series, I recommended Soul Eater to someone a while back as a first anime series. Turned out well.
If you want to get into anime (from a state of seeing little and not liking anime in the first place) it's best you start with more serious and mature series, lest you delve straight into a realm many find hard to understand or enjoy. A recent one that just came out called Shin Sekai Yori is very, very good. It has incredible animation and a very interesting, mysterious plot. You might also try Gundam 00 (or other older Gundam series for that matter), or Kara no Kyoukai.
Soul Eater, Hetalia, xxxHolic, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle.
As much as I hate to admit it, he has a point. I like Hetalia, but showing animes like that to people not-so-into it tend to drive them away and think anime as a whole is that nonsensical.
Also they shouldn't delve into anything too dark at first. I remember showing Death Note to a bunch of people who'd never seen anime before. Yeah that's a story to tell..... ^^"
I don't really watch anime at all, but Howl's Moving Castle is awesome.
