Fan is almost unshakably contented. Happy is too strong a word for it. No one can be happy all
the time, but she somehow manages to graciously accept the situation no matter how bad it is. She clearly has desires and motives of her own, but she never seems hurried or burdened by them. She can be said to have mastered the art of living 'effortlessly', nearly everything she does seems as though it was the most natural thing in the world; like water flowing downhill, the work required for it was already present. She greatly enjoys company, as her lifestyle offers few consistent companions. When the opportunity arises she likes to cook for others, and enjoys drinking when the mood strikes her.
Fan was born to a daoshi, a reclusive Tao priest. In her early life she became a Xian
, a human that attains limited immortality through one of a number of different possible methods. She gained her longevity through introspection, spiritual alchemy
, and meditation, becoming a Rénxiān (lit. "Human Immortal"). She has spent much of the last two centuries at odds with the Guǐxiān (lit. "Ghost Immortal"), a type of Xian that achieves a state similar to that of the Dead Apostles and feeds off of the prana of other living things. Because of misunderstandings surrounding this long conflict, she's also made enemies of several Dead Apostles after mistaking them for Guǐxiān. Over the course of her life she's picked up a number of useful skills.
Fan is more akin to a monster
than a magus. She doesn't cast spells, or even have a working knowledge of magecraft, although she does have a large reserve of prana.
To a normal human Fan's gymnastics skills and martial arts would seem super-human, due to more than a century of practice. She can speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hebrew, German, and Arabic. She is also very knowledgeable about herbal remedies, acupuncture, massage, and a number of other esoteric topics.
The spiritual alchemy that changed Fan into a Xian greatly restructured her soul, and her magic circuits along with it. Because of this different structure, her body can be likened to a machine that produces certain supernatural effects naturally, but is unable to actually perform magecraft; much like the descendants of phantasmal races
. Like all Xian she can leap great distances almost as if flying, create a powerful gale by blowing, heal herself through breathing or others by blowing on their wounds, and send whispered messages on the wind. Most importantly though she has an intrinsic control of her Ki, or life force. In terms of western magecraft, she can empower her strikes with her Od, and generate more through deep breathing (which is also how her lifespan has extended so long.)
