SIGN UPS CLOSED
By Royal Decree of His Majesty King Trebonious Lexius II, adventurers of all class are called upon to enter into the service of His Majesty and the Glorious City of Unix. Unix needs your help and the City Guard cannot do it alone. Volunteers will be stationed where needed in groups. Service lasts as long as the adventurer wishes, with a minimum period of one month. Payment is given at the end of each work week at the normal Mercenary rate of 20 gold pieces. Any interested parties are asked to fill out one of the forms below and return them to the Census office.
The Royal Clerk,
OK so if you couldn't tell from the above post, this RP has the PCs working as basically guards, technically mercenaries. You'll be stationed in crappy horrible places doing all the things normal guards can't, such as infiltrating gang bases, drug circles, and the like. However, you'll be doing this in a Fantasy realm, which always complicates things. Below I've given more information and the CS.
Race: (See list below)
Age: (Make it realistic)
Previous Occupation: (Before you applied for the Guard position)
Skills: (Anything your character is good at. Fighting, magic, stealth, cooking, ANYTHING relevant)
Short Bio: (Just give me an idea of your characters personality and history. Try and make it at least a few sentences.
The City of Unix
Unix was founded by humans hundreds of years ago by the Lexius Dynasty, on top of an existing city. Nobody knows who or what built the original city, however it was abandoned and mostly empty except for the Scepter of Kings, a magical device that gave control of the city and all its faculties to whoever controlled it. With the Scepter in hand, the Lexius Dynasty soon made the City of Unix into the most powerful city on the continent. All manner of races came to the city and trade flourished. The city is now home to thousands of people, a variety of cultures of and races, and untold riches. However, in the last decade or so, war has caused a drop in the City Guard because of the need for soldiers. This in turn has caused crime to increase and the new need for the hiring of mercenaries.
Merchants District - This is the economic center of the city. More money exchanges hands here then anywhere else in the city. All manner of shops and booths can be found, from the usual blacksmiths, grocers and weavers to fortune tellers, exotic herbs and arcane enchanters. Gnomes and orcs are found selling their gems and trinkets, dwarves selling and repairing armor and weapons, elves offering natural substances and balms and all manner of others. Of course everyone here is subject to the King's taxes, and we can't forget that this IS one of the areas in the city with the high crime rates, for obvious reasons.
The Sewers - Ever big city has a sewer system. Where else would everyone's... "leftovers"... go? Unix is no different. However, its sewer system was built by the city's original inhabitants, thousands of years ago. Because of its vastness, no one has ever managed to map out the entire system. The only areas frequently used are the Upper Sewers and those are only barely controlled. Gangs use them for fast travel around the city and the homeless and less fortunate barely make out a living there. The Watch/Guards have only recently begun attempting to assert some kind of control over the Upper Sewers.
- Undertown - Undertown is the town beneath Unix. More specifically beneath the Merchants District. It is home basically to everyone not wanted above. The homeless and poor, the diseased and scarred, the criminals and shunned. Smugglers have made fortunes sending supplies down for gangs and those below that can afford it. Currently the gang known as the Red Dragons are in control of Undertown.
*I'm vague on descriptions in order to give you as much leeway in character creation as possible. Also, as you'll see depending on your race you may have to face discrimination, distrust, and hate on some jobs.
Humans - The most common of the races and currently one of the most powerful races on the continent. They are jacks-of-all-trades and can be found in just about any occupation. Being the most common in the city, they are also treated to the least, if any, discrimination in the city.
Elves - The tall, beautiful people from the forests. These graceful folk are known for their mastery of magic and their connection with nature. They also are slightly distrusted by the humans for being so graceful and well spoken.
Dwarves - The short, hardy people of the mountains. From their hidden underground cities, this race creates some of the most beautiful and well-made armors, weapons and jewelry in the world. Few human or elven smiths can match the craftsmanship of the pieces. Dwarves are actually treated quite fairly among humans because of their likable personality when given a round or two of mead.
Gnomes - The even smaller cousins to the dwarves. This clever race is known for three things: The quality of their clockwork creations, the quality of their precious stones, and their fondness for riddles. The gnomes have mostly kept to themselves and only lately starting coming to the city in large flocks. While not really discriminated against, they are the butt of many jokes.
Goblins - Goblins are not exactly liked. They scaly, about the size of humans, and ugly. They can usually be split into two groups: The civilized ones who have come to the city and hold positions as merchants or in the guard, and the tribal ones. There exist uncountable tribes of goblins, and the sewers of Unix are said to be infested with goblins. Most distrust the civilized goblins because of their hated brothers, despite their skill with traditional weaponry and their eye (and nose) for treasure, making them great guards and jewelers.
Bugbears - Hulking furry beasts that look like bears on steroids. They're fierce and amazing with two-handed weaponry making them ideal guards. A little known fact though is that they're intensely loyal and will rather die then give up on their closest allies and friends. Most are looked down upon by society for their primitive tribal ways, despite their tribes ever causing much, if any, trouble.
Trolls - These are the largest of the accepted races. They are immensely strong and incredibly stupid. They are best for jobs requiring little thought besides a simple command. Thus they are usually employed as vault guards and such. The trolls usually get the most unfair treatment, if only for their lack of intelligence. Little is known about their origins.
Orcs - Like humans except bulkier, uglier and less graceful. Most are very superstitious and resort to shamanic magic or brute strength. They are only slightly accepted for their charms and magical trinkets, which are somehow of great quality. The advice and prophecies of their shamans are also highly sought out.
*The following races are either hated or considered "non-people" in the City of Unix. Please take MUCH thought before choosing to play as theses races. I WILL make it hard for you. If you choose vampire, werebeast, undead or half-imal, please tell me your base race and/or your other "half". For vampires, weres, constructs and undeads I will give you special instructions if needed.
Vampires - The Kings of the Night and the Lords of Blood. Vampires are hated by most and hunted down by the both churches (explained later) in Unix. Despite this, there are some who manage to make a living hiding their "curse". As of yet, there isn't a known cure. They need blood at least once a week to survive, once every two days to stay at top strength. Different race's blood gives different "advantages".
Werebeasts - At night some become blood sucking creatures. Some other turn into deadly beasts. Most have little control over their urges and their turning, and are hunted down by the churches. Like vampires, werebeasts can blend into society but it is very hard. Those that can blend in and have some control over their urges normally only change when they want to or when they have to, on full moons. When in beast form only those who have mastered their changing can retain control and their personality. Most let the beast take over until the change is over. There are several varieties of were including wolf, bear, lion, crocodile, fox, eagle, and legend says, shark. (No PC weresharks are allowed. Sorry.)
Fae - Beautiful winged creatures from another realm. The Fae are hated by the humans and many other races for tricks, charms, and mindspells. While they normally prefer to keep to themselves, when one takes it upon themselves to come to the mortal realm, great trouble follows. While not actually hunted down, they are closely watched and distrusted.
Halflings - When a human and one of the other races interbreed, a halfling is born. Normally this might be accepted, but because of the influence of the church, these beings are hated and subject to great discrimination. Most aren't even considered people, and attempt to hide their background. Despite all this, they are normally greatly skilled in many arts. (Gnomes, bugbears, and trolls are not allowed as the other half for halflings. It just wouldn't make sense.)
Constructs - Magical machine men who were created by the gnomes as servants, yet somehow gained intelligence. The gnomes are split on this. They lost their labor sources but managed to create life, in a sense. By most other races, they are misunderstood and considered non-beings. Because they are mostly machine, they don't have much of a connection to magic and usually make bad mages. On the other hand though, they can create parts and "modifications" for themselves allowing a variety of actions.
Undead - When someone dies, usually they are put to rest. In some cases though their soul might be trapped and put back into their body by some means. This creates an undead. The undead are considered abominations and, like vampires, hunted by the churches. Most become insane or have no control over their life as an undead. However, some manage to become their own independent and intelligent entities. Luckily, through a special law backed by several power mages, IF an undead is accompanied by either a registered mage or a guardsman, they will be left alone. Mostly. (Constructs and Fae cannot be undead. And no undead werewolves or vampires.)
Half-imal - This is a special listing given to any creature that is half beast and half man. This includes beings like centaurs, nagas, and sphinx. I'm very hesitant to allow any of these. Speak to me if you're interested.
Factions*This is an incomplete list. Factions will be added and changed as needed.
Lexius Dynasty - The ruling family of Unix, and currently possibly the most powerful family on the continent. The current King is Trebonious Lexius II, an elderly, mostly fair ruler. He has been known to be kind of eccentric at times occasionally making odd requests. For the most part however, he has ruled the city justly. Conditions for previously discriminated races have improved, though only barely. His two blood sons Trebonious Lexius III, a hot-headed, uneven warrior and Tiberious Lexius, a kind and humble man. Rumors circulate that Tiberious dabbles in some white magic. Several years ago the Queen was poisoned by an unknown assassin. The only other family member is Wulvious (Wulf), the King's adopted dwarf son. Nobody knows the reason behind the adoption.
The Nobles - The many powerful families that make up the aristocracy. They have a Council where each family get a set number of votes and the Council can call for certain actions. Declarations of war and peace, treaties, and major laws usually go have to go through the Council. In many cases, a voting bloc lead by the Royal Family pushes these actions through. There are very few cases where the King's will isn't done.
The most powerful Noble Familys are, in order of power, Lexius, Rexius, Zinos, Hyrda, and Einx.
- House Lexius - The Ruling Family. They have been the rulers of Unix as long as Unix has been a city. They have proven to be an honorable family with only a small number of "bad seeds".
- House Rexius - The Warlords. Rexius is made up of some of the city's best commanders and most celebrated warriors. Known for being hot headed and quick with the sword, Rexius has never been one for deceit. Though they may not always agree with the politics, preferring to just swing a sword at it, they are immensely loyal to the Crown. The current Patriarch is High Commander Renius Rexius.
- House Zinos - The Magi. Zinos is the house in charge of policing magic. They control and study any major artifacts or tomes found, they control the portals used by the city and they run the Arcane University. Few outsiders are ever accepted into their fold, and they like it that way. Though they remain mysterious and secretive, they have also been loyal to the crown.
Criminal Organizations - Like every major city, Unix has its share of bad guys and criminals. Some of these law breakers have formed gangs and other groups, mostly just looking to make a profit.
- The Red Dragons - One of the big gangs in Unix. The Red Dragons currently control Undertown and its surrounding sewer tunnels. Nobody has ever managed to find their base of operations or their boss. Rumors persist that the gang gets its name from a pet dragon the boss has managed to raise in the sewers. This is most likely hogwash though.
I'll finish the others later as i get time.---
Things such as religions and factions will be added as needed. Probably will be more fun to learn about them as you go :D
