This is a writing site, not a competition. Hall of Fames will result in inevitable elitists and attention whores.
And we already have enough of those as is, no need to put a ribbon around them and hang them on a wall.
What would the point of that be other than to piss people off and create a false sense of entitlement for those chosen and a very real feeling of rejection for those who were not? This is an awful, potentially guild wrecking idea. You want recognition? Enter one of the contests.
I don't see what the big deal is. It is suppose to reward people who done something good on the forum and suppose to be fun. You proably got attention whores in the contents here but they still go the hell on, so why not a Hall of Fame? Just a game in the end :).
Because people end up taking it too seriously, in both directions.
There actually aren't attention whores in the contests, as I can tell you from having run one for a while.
And why? Because, firstly, the entries are anonymous. People voting on a piece of writing/art is just a little bit different from voting on which member is best suited for the title of ____, since the latter is really nothing more than a personality contest where you really are just voting for which members, personally are "the best", as opposed to anonymously judging someone's talent. Also, titling someone "Queen of RPG" can make heads swell a bit more than saying "your short story won this contest this month".
Also, you'll of course get people saying "______ only won because she's popular and lots of people know her! Not because she's talented!" or whatever. Which really... makes sense. People will vote for the people they like, so therefore who often visit Off-Topic and are seen more in the non-roleplaying sections of the site (like Spammers, etc) will inevitably get more votes than someone who's never left the main roleplaying sections, since logically not many people would know them other than their roleplaying buddies, and the contest takes place on the Off-Topic-ish parts of the site, anyway, so lesser-known roleplayers practically don't stand a chance, no matter how good of a roleplayer/writer/artist/person they are.
And as you seem to have been missing, this sort of thing has been tried before. I wasn't there for it, but I hear it was somewhat of a disaster. The forum's closed off now, although I'm pretty sure it's still technically accessible even if you can't post on it or see it from the site index, like Persistent World, and I think I've accessed it once before. Ah, here it is! Feel free to sort out this mess for yourself.
Well, I'll just hand out my own awards then if you guys don't wanna do one :D!
