I'm not certain whether or not this is what Sophistikit and Herzinth meant, but by being Americans, Americans have the general opinion that Canada is "different" and things happen there that don't happen "close to home". The same is true of Canadians speaking of Americans. It's also worth noting that in both cases, the news will be predominantly showing anything in its respective country, and only tremendously over-the-top or interesting stories will pass over the border, leading each population to have a hyperbolistic perception of the other.
I am a Canadian who never consumes syrup. There is a juice made from prune. Prune nectar is good.
