Was Merlin too obvious a choice for Dumbledore and that's why they went for Trident? That's the one I disagreed with most.

This. I don't know why they didn't do Merlin -- he would be perfect. (He's actually who I sort of pictured when I first read the books, before the movies started coming out. XD)
