After I hear why you people read horror stories , I will explain why I do.
I think it's mostly looking for something that unnerves me more than makes me jump. It can also be refreshing to have more expendable characters, I'm not a fan of gore for gore's sake though. May I guess why you read it?
Not so much horror, but I guess... psychological stuff? Say, I'd prefer something like uh....
Uh...
Fuck, I'm going to make obscure manga references now.
I'd prefer something like Necrophile of Darkside Sister/Moryou no Yurikago over something like the Jason franchise. Essentially, the breakdown of someone's /society's composition in order to cope with the current situation, over something that just has a blood splatter every three seconds.
I wait for 2 more people before explaining my reasons.
To make myself paranoid.
I enjoy them. The darker side of human nature is interesting.
love 'em. Creepypastas, /r/letsnotmeet, etc. I'll read anything. It's all fodder for my main story idea.
I read them to get an idea what people find disturbing, to get my mind off stuff, to get my mind in a certain mood for visualizing stuff, and for fun.
The stories people do on sites like 4chan and reddit and wherever are a lot more conceptual and current than shitty horror movies. I think those people are really damn creative.
"In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."
Horror is fun because it's unpredictable if done well, and exploring the dark, terrifying parts of the human imagination is always stimulating.
Plus, horrific entities that cause people to go mad at the sight of them because they simply cannot comprehend what they are beholding always makes for excellent reading.
