The Warehouse
"I swear, James, I saw it with my own two eyes!" The teenage boy's voice cracked, ascending an octave. Those townspeople in the room gave him mixed reactions; most were humoured, but some looked slightly worried for his mental health.
James let out a short laugh. "Tim, you sure you weren't seein' things?" James was the leader of the town and was build like a fort. He was ex-military, a marine. If anybody was fit to lead their little town, it was him.
"I'm sure. It was flying through the fucking sky. Like there wasn't any gravity. It was heading straight over the mountai-"
The few of the men in the small warehouse seemed to be getting uncomfortable with his story. "I think that's enough for today. Walkers don't fly, Tim. I reckon you need to take a trip to the medical practise and get checked out." James said, now deadly serious. Tim looked around the room, realising that nobody would believe him. "I wasn't seeing things, James." Tim said lowly, turning on his heels and leaving the warehouse with a slam of the hefty fire exit door.
The Food Store
Charlie placed his groceries on the counter, nodding to Sharon as she scribbled down what he was taking.
"I like this whole 'no money' business. It's kinda' nice. Takin' only what ya need." Sharon said, popping a stick of gum into her mouth before placing the groceries in a paper bag.
"Yeah, me too." Charlie said, rolling up the top of the bag. "So how much have I got left this month?" Charlie asked.
"Umm. Three baskets of food, two bags of powdered milk and five bottles of water." She listed from her little sheet of paper. Charlie thanked her and made his way towards the door of the store.
"Did you hear about what happened to our little Peter yet?" A woman said from behind one of the shelves. "No! What happened?" Another woman exclaimed, stopping Charlie in his tracks.
"Well, he was on his run with Jim, Dan and what's his name.. Randy! Well, they ran into a horde and to put a long story short; he got left behind."
"What? They didn't go back for him?"
"Well apparently the walkers got to him first.."
Charlie quickly left the store, taking in a deep breath of air. Peter was dead. He was the second guy to die on the supply run this month. He could remember talking to Peter only yesterday; Peter telling him how he wasn't really fit for the job, how the rest of his team seemed to be excluding him.
He felt an icy shiver run through him and tried to ignore it; walking back to his apartment on the newly named Second Street. This was only a section of what was once Longview and was made up of ten streets, so for the sake of simplicity they renamed them by number.
As he made his way along the street, the sun beating down on the suburban homes where a handful of children played on the front lawns, Charlie heard footsteps against the sidewalk behind him. He turned to see Maria, who stopped breathlessly before him. "Hey Charlie." She smiled before her smile turned to a frown. "You alright? You seem a bit down."
"Yeah. I just found out about Pete." Charlie sighed.
"I know, it's shit..."
"I just saw you walking down First Street and thought I'd let you know. There's a new guy in town. His name is Isaac. He's been here for a few days, apparently. Must have been in hiding."
"Really?" Charlie said in surprise. Normally the day after someone had arrived in town everybody already knew all there was to know about them.
"James found him a house on Tenth street. He's gunna' ask him if he wants Pete's job on the supply run." Maria said, fiddling with the hilt of her dagger as she spoke, spinning it between her fingers. "Oh, also. We need to go on a supply run before it gets dark. In about an hour."
"Fantastic." Charlie said sarcastically. "I'll get these groceries inside and meet you guys at the Warehouse then."
Castle Rock, Washington (Approx 12 miles North of Longview)
"Get the fuck off of me!" Peter barked, ramming his blade through the walker's head and rolling back up to his feet. He stood perfectly still, listening for any more walkers approaching. There was nothing. A sob escaped his mouth and Peter dropped back onto the cold laminate floor, sliding himself away from the dead walker. He looked down over his arms; three walkers had bitten down on his left arm with one walker having sunk it's teeth into his right. Congealed and fresh blood covered his torn arms.
He looked up through the massive glass windows of the supermarket. It wouldn't be long now until he turned. He tried to forget what was happening, instead choosing to drop his head back against the empty supermarket shelf and let the sunlight cover his body and soothe his wounds. His eyelids grew heavy from fatigue and blood loss and he could feel himself slipping away.
He let it go on for a few moments, drifting away. I'll never let myself become one of those things. A voice whispered from the last active corners of his mind. It was his voice, he remembered. He said it when he was reassuring Amanda, his girlfriend, that he would be safe doing his job.
He forced his eyelids open and grabbed his gun, looking right into the sun in the sky. It was time. He lifted the gun to his head and forced himself to pull the trigger.
Silence.
