"SpeedStar! Control the flames! I'll get the civilians clear!"
Knighthood's voice boomed over the fiery destruction of the burning building in downtown Central City. The two heroes had arrived on the scene before the fire brigade, and it was clear the building was going down, Knighthood just intended to have noone inside when it did. His high-tech HUD had allowed him to locate the small group of civilians hiding in a back room.
"On it." the gruff speedster replied. In the blink of an eye he was gone, zipping in a lightning-fast whirlpool around the interior of the building, driving back the flames as best he could. You could see why they called him the Son of Speed. Raising his arm, Knighthood blasted the debris away from the doorway with an explosive beam of bright blue energy. Kicking through the door, he found half a dozen terrified people huddled together in the corner of the room as the raging fire had driven them to the corner of the building.
"This building is coming down on top of us. I'll be escorting you to your nearest fire exit. Let's move!" He had the calming voice of a natural leader, and the people followed him without question. Knighthood led them out into the blazing hallway as Speedstar whipped past, keeping the flames away from the group. The moaning and groaning of the walls urged Knighthood that he was running out of time. He pointed in the direction of a fire exit at the end of the hallway.
"There! Keep moving! You're going to be-"
A huge pile of debris came crashing down through the ceiling. Knighthood caught the weight with both hands, barely keeping the immense weight from crushing the group, easily over 20 tonnes of debris from the floors above. His knees buckled and his armor strained as he planted his feet between the debris and the ground.
"Go!" he bellowed.
The people sprinted to the fire exit, bursting out into the safety of the streets. Knighthood's HUD flashed a warning red. Not enough power for a burst from the jet boots to get him to safety. His body sank lower and lower and his knees bent further and further as the inevitable began to happen. With one last thud the immense weight came crashing down on the hero.
Knighthood heard the familiar voice of his teammate as he was grabbed and sped to safety by SpeedStar. The pair were met with adoring applause and cheers from the crowd that had been watching the ordeal in the streets. Knighthood waved and posed for pictures as SpeedStar stood alone, checking the Global Guardians comm-link on his wrist.
"Look alive, Tinman." he said abruptly. "Crime doesn't stop to sign autographs."
Knighthood stood posed with a group of teenage girls as one snapped the picture on her phone. The people of Central City adored their own Knight in Shining Armor, and unlike SpeedStar, Knighthood couldn't help but enjoy the attention.
"We aren't the only heroes in town." he smiled.
