Recently when I've left the forum open in my browser (I use Firefox) I receive the occasional pop up in a new tab to various websites. One of them was:
http://mediaplayer-download888.net (not the full link but I only got that bit before I closed it down for safety's sake).
Normally I'd assume this to be either be malware of a rootkit on my own PC but I've done a little research and I've seen it supposedly happen on a few other forums. I have yet to find conclusive evidence of this but I was curious to see if anyone else has had a similar experience?
Currently I'm doing a full Sophos scan of my PC as well as checking services and registry changes but it's a slow process.
This is the first time I'm hearing of it, but I'll keep this thread open in the event anyone else experiences a similar issue.
My first instinct would be the same, malware or a rootkit, however its not unheard of for malicious adds to get by googles standards on occasion and cause the same sort of thing.
I'm going to try out using different browsers (Opera and Chrome) to see if it's an issue with my own Firefox. Virus scans turned up nothing so far. I'll also continue researching it when I'm not at work.
It seems to be fairly harmless, even if it is an issue others are experiencing (as long as you have flashblock or a similar addon).
Having done some fiddling and research I've come to the following conclusions:
-It can, obviously, be due to malware or a rootkit
-It can be due to an addon/extension within your browser
-It can be due to a corrupted browser
-It can be due to an installed program on your PC which is technically legit and so escapes malware and virus scans.
There is some evidence to suggest this can come from adverts/banners on a Web page even if you do not click on them (this would be more along the malware route).
The solutions, as I see them are:
-Remove dodgy addons/extensions you don't remember installing in your browser
-Fully remove and reinstall your browser
-Obviously virus/malware scan (Kapersky offer a free malware scanner)
-Check your installed programs and remove any odd ones (Google them first to check, just in case).
I've had these advert tabs popping up while watching Netflix/iPlayer and while viewing other pages so is not unique to the forums but there is a high correlation between forum users and those afflicted with the issue (one forum moderator linked it to a previous issue with their banner ads but that was only in one instance). The correlation could simply be that forum users tend to surf the Web more anyway and are often less paranoid about security.
P.S This got through Sophos so I doubt, in my instance, that it was malware in the usual sense. The registry seemed largely unchanged (the only change I could see was my installing Rome 2: Total War which was after the first instance of this) and msconfig was equally unyielding in results.
