[Apocalypse World] The Wolves of the Maelstrom
Howdy folks, I'd quite like to run a game of Apocalypse World because it is awesome and surprisingly well suited to play-by-post gaming for something originally designed for tabletop. The resolution system is simple, roll 2d6 (we'll use http://orokos.com/roll/ for convenience and bookkeeping) and add your stat. 10+ is a full success, 7-9 is a partial success, with consequences and on a 6- I'll tell you what happens - and you won't like it.
If you're raising your eyebrow at the thought of using a diceroller in a play-by-post because you're used to freeform RP - don't be. In Apocalypse World, you literally freeform RP and the only time the rules come into effect is when you're trying to do something where your chance of success in uncertain. This keeps things fair. The MC (Master of Ceremonies - me) is running off their own rulebook as to what they can do to you - everything they do is in response to something a player does. The game is a back-and-forth: a player does something that provokes a dice roll, the MC responds, the player responds in kind.
If you don't care and just want to RP, all you need to know is that there's a little more mechanical backing to my responses so that it's not actually completely arbitrary. Which is good for you, because this is Apocalypse World, and things are kind of bad.
To note: You do not need to really know or worry about the rules - that's my job. It's just enough to know that they are there. A read of the link further down this post may be helpful, however, if only so you know what the basic moves are.
Something like 50 years ago, the world ended. Billions died, cities crumbled and fell, the skies burned and life as we know it came to an end. The Golden Age of legend where things were good, grass grew, children were happy and you could see beyond tomorrow came to a horrifying, destructive end in the fires of the apocalypse. The oldest of us still remember it. For the rest of us, we grew up in this mess. All we know is the wasteland.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction and as the world died, something was born. A terrible thing. The Maelstrom. Nobody really knows what it is, but plenty are happy to speculate, and lie and bullshit each other that they know the truth. A psychic amalgamation of all of humanity's hate and fear, mixed with the energies of a dying world, it constantly screams in our heads at the edge of perception. And if you let it, it will tell you things. Who knows, maybe you'll get desperate enough to listen.
So here's what we got. A scorched, burning wasteland on the edge of a ruined and dead city. Cannibal slavers, insane cults, awful mutants, hunger, thirst, disease. A holding with too many mouths to feed and not enough strong arms to defend ourselves. All our human failings, our lack of trust and our vendettas. Yeah, this is what we got. But what are you going to make of it?
I'm looking for 4, maybe 5 players to be the stars of this show. The basic assumption of any player character in Apocalypse World is that you are a straight-up badass. For starters, you're alive in the Apocalypse so that puts you a cut above the average person. Second, you're a unique, one of a kind special case. Every playbook (that's a character archetype) is named The. There are plenty of people with functioning vehicles in Apocalypse World but there is only one The Driver. If anyone's going to make anything out of this god forsaken world, it's going to be you guys. So there is only one of any particular playbook in game at a time. On the other hand, if you see someone else has submitted a character from a playbook you want to play, go ahead anyway - your idea might be better than theirs and we can certainly talk it out like adults to see who wants to play what.
A list of the core Apocalypse World playbooks and the rules
A quick summary:
The Angel: You're a doctor, probably one of the last ones left. Your skills are in high demand, so charge big bucks for them.
The Battlebabe: You're not necessarily a girl, but you are as stunning as you are dangerous. You can kill and leave people speechless with equal measure.
The Brainer: You're a weirdo psychic who can mess around inside people's heads and talk to the Maelstrom on more equal terms.
The Chopper: You're a badass biker who runs a gang of other badass bikers.
The Driver: You're the best goddamn driver in the wasteland with the best goddamn cars.
The Gunlugger: You're the hardest, most dangerous person in the world. You have more guns than anyone and you know how to use them.
The Hardholder: You run the closest thing to a town that Apocalypse World has. You have a lot of power but an awful lot of responsibility.
The Hocus: You're the leader of a cult. You are really good at preaching to mobs, have fanatical followers and are kind of scary.
The Operator: You're a mercenary who always has five plates spinning at once. Everybody knows you and you get a lot done but your life is kind of difficult.
The Saavyhead: You're one of the few people left who's good with machines. You can build and fix just about anything and some people say you can even talk to machines (you can)
The Skinner: You're an unbelievably charismatic charmer. You're so good it's practically hypnosis. Arguably you're the only good thing left in the wastelands.
and some additional ones I can link you to if you're interested
The Faceless: You're Literally Bane. You wear a mask and you're a gigantic hardcase.
The Hoarder: You collect things. Lots of things. So many things your collection is actually kind of sentient now and gives you powers.
The Maestro D': You run a bar, a smoking den or some other kind of entertainment establishment. This gives you a surprising amount of power if you think about it. After all, you have access to everyone's food.
The Quarantine: You're a soldier from before the Apocalypse who recently awoke from a stasis pod with very little memory. It's going to be tough to adjust, but you do have a bunch of pre-war tech to play with.
The Solace: You're a fundamentally good person who seems to have the power to keep the Maelstrom at bay. The bad news is, it knows this and you're constantly hunted by the Wolves of the Maelstrom.
The Touchstone: You're Eli from Book of Eli. You go around spreading hope with some kind of symbol. You're also a terrifying badass in combat.
The Juggernaut: You've got a straight-up suit of power armor. When you're inside it, you're practically unstoppable. When you're outside it, you ain't much.
The Wolf: You're the Joker from the Dark Knight. An agent of chaos with a magic briefcase that has the Maelstrom inside, you exist to spread anarchy.
