"The universe is infinitely vast. Though some say you can reach the end and others say different, everyone can agree that the universe holds a wealth of mystery, intrigue, and discovery. Every new planet discovered holds an opportunity to learn new things, meet new species, and progress forward a few more steps. Thousands of years ago, this is what humanity did. Through the creation of the Drive Rings, humankind was able to finally interconnect a small piece of the vastness of the universe. In doing so, human society was able to meet many new races and, through the trade of information, all were able to learn and progress. Everything wasn't peaceful of course, but such is the way of life. However, war is not our story. Intergalactic conquest is not the thing that will be remembered in legends and myths years from now. No, it won't be the bloodshed and fighting that we'll remember;
It will be the crew of the Claustrum."
~Warden Vice Mitchell, Director of Arch Maximus; The galaxy's largest prison planet
You are an ex-con. You did something illegal and maybe even deplorable, but whatever it was, it landed you on Arch Maximus. You were serving out your sentence when you were approached by the top brass with a proposal. Despite how dangerous you may or may not be, you were being given a chance to earn your freedom. They explained that they were gathering a crew of criminals like yourself to embark on a journey to the edge of the galaxy to retrieve a very important item. While you were scum enough not to be told what it was, they did let you know that it would be an extremely dangerous mission. The job was being labeled as a suicide mission and it was deemed that if anybody were to die on the journey, it'd be better if it were criminals and not law-abiding citizens of the galaxy. Whatever your reservations, you eventually accepted the offer.
You are told that the crew will consist of many different races and species of individuals. They're all criminals so they're differences don't matter much in the grand scheme of things. You're also told that you will wear a Bond the entire time. As a memory refresher, they tell you that a Bond is a shackle-like device that is set to instantly kill the wearer based on certain conditions programmed into the device itself. All that means to you is that any escape attempt is out of the question. You are then told that you will be given a standard set of weaponry(the same as each crew member) and that you will meet with the rest of the crew and leave in a few days. You are allowed to pack nothing. You are allowed to bring nothing, mostly because you have nothing to bring anyway. Finally, you reach a large hangar that is located far from the prison cells of your block. You enter and are immediately astounded by what you see. Rather than a standard star cruiser, your eyes meet with an actual warship.
According to your escorts, this is the Claustrum.
Even though this sounds sci-fi and futuristic, there is no one setting for this RP. While the Claustrum will play an integral setting role, the cast will travel to many different worlds. Each world has the potential to contain any number of settings. You may be introduced to a high fantasy setting on one planet before landing on a steampunk planet next. The setting will depend on which world is visited. For all intents and purposes though, sci-fi does come first because the characters will possess highly advanced technology despite whatever race and species they are. Here is some basic information starting out though:
The current year is 6230. The Milky Way galaxy was abandoned by humanity thousands of years prior and they now reside in what is known as a Mega Galaxy. Even though it is still referred to as a simple "galaxy", it is many times larger than any average galaxy. Many different planets and moons exist within, but humanity's new home is a planet call Tryon. It is of the same constitution as earth, but more rich in resources and about three times larger than Earth was. It also possesses three moons as opposed to one. The sun it orbits around is almost exactly the same as the one in the Milky Way however; the only difference found is that it seems to be a younger star.
This is where you will have the most creativity, much more so than in most RPs. Rather than give you a list of species and races, the players will be allowed to create any race or species they want or use an existing one in fiction. Like stated above, the universe is vast and there is no reason to limit the infinite possibilities. The character skeleton will explain in more detail, but almost anything you can think of can be accommodated.
As for cast size, I only need a minimum of four including myself. Anything bigger is totally fine. For the type of RP this will be, it can support a large or small cast as well as drop in and drop out ability. The drop in, drop out basically means that if you join the RP, but real life becomes hectic, you can easily take a break during one of the many sub plots and bring your character back in when your situation is resolved. Even though we all hate people who become inactive or just randomly leave without saying anything, this RP can also continue along if that were to happen due to its structure. Suffice it to say, this is the type of RP that can endure many hardships if necessary, but obviously I would not wish or want it to come to that.
Here is the character sheet:
Appearance(Digital art please, no real life pictures. You can also just provide a written description)
Age(Minimum eighteen please; if you're a species that's not human, feel free to be as old as you want)
Race/Species(Okay, so in this section, you can either create your own unique species or use one that exists in fiction currently. Just about anything is acceptable. The crew will be composed of beings from all over the universe so it only makes sense that almost anything can be represented. Also, in this RP, fictional races and such do exist. Be creative here if you want)
Crime(We're all criminals and got sent to a maximum security planet for a reason. Describe your crime in this section. It can be as gruesome, mature, or dark and twisted as you want. It can also be a little light and relatively petty; just don't say it was a misunderstanding. We are all criminals and convicting us was definitely the right decision.)
Homeworld(If you are not a human, what is your homeworld called and describe it a little. If you're a human, Tryon is your homeworld and no description is needed as it will have its own section in the OOC)
Special trait(I refrained from calling this an "ability" for a reason. If you're not a human, give me ONE thing your species can do that is special. Think along the lines of night vision or breathing underwater. Don't give me some magical or offensive ability. It's a trait and not a power. If you're human, you have no special trait so put N/A here)
Skill(This is different from the trait. These criminals weren't just picked randomly. Each may hold a skill that would valuable for a crew member on a star cruiser. Think skills like a cook, or a medic, or something along those lines. If you don't want or can't think of a skill, you can also put "None" in this section. Finally, "Pilot" is off limits.)
Brief History(I said brief, but remember Advanced standards. Just describe a bit your character's life and maybe what led up to them committing the crime that got them sent to Arch Maximus.)
Writing Sample(Give me a brief writing sample so I can learn of your style. Minimum length is 2-3 paragraphs - which is Advanced standards anyway - though it can be longer than that if you'd like.)
The tech level in this RP - for the cast anyway - is highly advanced. This is a universe where ships can travel at FTL speeds through warp drives and getting to planets only takes days or weeks rather than years. The tech level is science fantasy though, so don't try to call me out for explanations because that's not what this is about. I will explain some of the more notable tech below, but again, I know it's fictional and could never work out logically. With that said, here is some notable tech:
Now a relic of ancient times, the Drive Rings were the gates that allowed humanity to cross into different parts of the universe almost instantaneously. A Drive Ring works by resonating with a ship's Infinity Core and activating the core itself, allowing for FTL travel to a set of coordinates or destination. However, when warp drives came into being, Infinity cores and Drive Rings were abandoned because the "center" worlds of the mega galaxy had no need to travel beyond a certain range anymore. An intergalactic government was set up and life proceeded without having to travel to the far reaches of the galaxy so there was no longer a need for Drive Rings that could transport a ship over such a long distances. Drive Rings are still in place however, acting as monuments to an older time.
An Infinity Core was the prelude to the warp drive. It is a large, spherical structure that creates millions of atom-sized explosions of atomic energy. This atomic energy is used in conjunction with a Drive Ring to propel a craft of any size in a straight line at FTL speeds. It was useful because the atomic energy could be used to propel a ship to the farther reaches of a galaxy without having to waste fuel and the ship would arrive almost instantaneously. However, when warp drives become dominant and the center worlds lost the need to reach the outskirts of the galaxy, Infinity Cores and Drive Rings were abandoned because of their co-dependence on one another. Warp drives didn't need a companion device to reach FTL speeds.
Mass Drivers were developed for projectile weapons. A Mass Driver is composed of coils of wire energized by electricity to create electromagnets. Sequential firing of electromagnets propels a payload along a path at extremely high speeds. Mass Drivers replaced the old firing mechanisms of all projectiles hundreds of years prior to the present day. Because of Mass Drivers, handguns became equivalent to assault rifles and long guns in general. Most assault rifles and long guns are now only used when special types of ammunition call for it as handguns are small, compact, and light, but can effectively fire lethal shots at long ranges with or without the aid of optical scopes or aiming mechanisms.
A Bond is a shackle-like device that instantly kills the wearer based on whatever conditions are programmed into the device itself. It also kills the wearer if the wearer tries to tamper with the device. It was created for criminals who are allowed back into society, but need to be monitored for whatever reason. It relays information back to a master computer that is usually monitored by whoever placed the Bond in the first place. A Bond records information about its wearer such as general physical condition and location if need be. A Bond does not record audio or video however as it is not for spying. A Bond can be placed on various parts of the body.
The plot will be as such that there will be many subplots under the umbrella of an overarching narrative. While the cast is on their way to the edge of the galaxy, they will encounter many different situations and scenarios that will shape the direction of the RP. Largely decided by players, subplots will be as long or as short as they need to be and all situations will provide ample opportunity for character development and interaction by all. There is no one main character as everybody will be equally important.
This RP will be composed of many tones as well. There will be a little bit of everything; grit, darker scenarios, romance, lightheartedness, etc. The tone will largely be dictated by the subplot currently being played out and the world the crew is on at the time. Above all else though, this will be a mature RP so as to accommodate all realms of material without restricting too much. That's one of the reasons I imposed a minimum age limit of eighteen.
1. The GM(myself) has final say on RP decisions
2. I'm no post length nazi, just remember Advanced standards; 2-3 paragraphs at the minimum with proper spelling and grammar. You don't have to write massive books in each post.
3. I won't impose a posting schedule as competent roleplayers can see when they need to post and such. I just ask that you keep active and avoid drowning others out if possible.
4. I'm looking for active RPers; I have no problems with people chatting in the OOC about random things and such. Communicative, social, and active players are always the best in my book. An active OOC is often the sign of a healthy RP, so let's keep it active when it does get made please(don't worry, I always participate in my OOC threads as much as possible). And I'll say again, not every OOC post has to be about the RP, just remember that it can be used to lobby your questions and such as well as the random conversation.
In this same vein, if you have to disappear for a while, let me know via PM or the OOC thread. Do not just disappear. If you become inactive, I'll PM you a couple times, but after that, we'll move on without you or your character.
5. Be respectful of other players and if you do feel the need to argue with someone, take it to PM.
6. There will be a one character limit for now. I may change that if we progress to certain points, but for right now, just focus on one character.
7. Enjoy the RP!
Welcome to my interest check! Most of the information regarding this RP and its workings is above in the hiders. Nothing is that long, I just chose to put it in hiders because it looks better haha. In any case, more information will be added to the OOC should this get enough interest because there is some more details that need to be revealed and explained.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me in this thread. I'll be more than happy to answer anything. Also, this thread will double as an interest check and character submission thread. You can show interest and wait for the OOC to submit a character if you'd like or you can submit one right here. Stated again, I only need a minimum of four to begin the RP, but I don't have a maximum number. Any and all who would like to show interest and be apart of this may do so. The crew can be large or small, it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. I'm merely looking for active, social, and communicative players.
With all that said, who would be interested in this?
