"A Grand Affair" ~Mieko & SirLavitz~
"Miss Harper!" comes the bellowing voice which stops the young woman in her tracks at the time clock. Mr. Davis was the manager of the department which she worked and whenever anyone was late, it could be heard throughout the entire store she was sure. And he steps up to the younger woman, looking down his nose at her as he adjust his glasses and looks down at his pocket watch. "Five minutes. I trust you have a good excuse."
"Yes Mr. Davis, I realize I'm late." Victoria let's out a sigh. She was late and she knew it. Though it was only by 5 minutes Mr. Davis was a stickler for punctuality. She'd been there now going on two years and in all that time she'd never been late but once before. It had hardly been her fault. The trolley she took had come off it's tracks 3 blocks before her usual stop and she'd had to hoof it the rest of the way. But even that hadn't been a good enough excuse back then. And now her one wasn't any better. "It could hardly be helped. There was an accident between Broadway and Lexington. It held up the entire block and the trolley couldn't get through. It held up everyone."
"Then you should have taken a cab."
"A cab?!" Victoria squeaks indignantly as she looks up to the pencil thin man whose neck she'd like to have taken between both hands to throttle him. And she'd no doubt she'd do it quite well. She was a far sight more solid than he. "And you'd like to tell me how I should afford a cab on my wages?"
"Time Miss Harper." He taps at his watch before slipping it back into his pocket. "Time is tick, tick, ticking away. I suggest you get on the floor before your pay is docked any further." And he turns with an arrogant flip of his head as he leaves the girl shaking the snow from her jacket and mumbling beneath her breath.
"Time is tick tick ticking away." She mocks as she looks out the door after him and sticks out her tongue. "One of these days...just one of these days." What was going to happen one of these days she didn't know but, 'Something will.' And placing her coat away in the employee's locker along with her purse she smooths out her skirt and suit jacket before heading off to the floor. No doubt to deal with any number of annoying customers. How it was she was supposed to automatically know what was the perfect gift for everyone she couldn't fathom but that seemed to be just what everyone expected.
