I'd like to try hosting a thread where members of this site can fight each other in a sort of modified DnD system of my design. I think it'd be fun and interesting for everyone involved and if it takes off I would put more effort into it. As it stands it's relatively simple.
I'd like to begin with a tournament format. Members will sign up and be set against each other one on one eliminating each other until there is one left standing. You would be able to choose between sword and shield or a two handed-sword. More options would be added if people end up liking this and participating.
The way the combat will work is when it is your turn you will say what you want to do. It's up to you whatever you want to do from simply attacking your opponent to whatever else. You would receive a penalty though for example if you wanted to specifically aim for the neck or whatever special action you can think of based on how reasonable it would be to execute. It will be randomly chosen who gets to act first. After each have taken their turn, it will again be random who will move first.
Each opponent you defeat will increase your strength depending on which set of equipment you chose. For example sword and shield gets stronger defensively while two-handed sword gets stronger offensively.
I should add that you are limited to the abilities of a human and the use of either of the sets of equipment I mentioned, just in case that wasn't clear.
To sign up post here saying whether you'll be using a sword and shield or a two-handed sword. I am open to any constructive criticism.
Can you explain what you meant by You would receive a penalty though for example if you wanted to specifically aim for the neck or whatever special action you can think of based on how reasonable it would be to execute?
What I mean is for example if you wanted to call your shot instead of just generally attacking, then I would add a negative modifier to your hit dice making it less likely you would hit them. It can pay off or it can cause you to miss.
If you wanted to do something silly like throw your sword at your opponent, you'd receive a heavier penalty since swords aren't really designed to be thrown. If that did hit though it would end up doing the same damage as if you attacked them normally, only you'd be able to have some distance from them depending on where you were when you did this and you'd have to retrieve your sword even if you missed. It's just an example of what you could do.
Off the topic of special actions:
I should mention that it is possible to critically hit your opponent if you roll high enough, though I may reconsider that since either it could make the matches end too quickly or it might be unbalanced in some of the match-ups.
There's also a chance to critically fail if you roll a one. That's unlikely though since I'd then have to make another roll to see if anything even happens. As an example you might lose your grip on your sword and have to retrieve it next round. I may also reconsider putting this in.
I like the critical failure ideas--it is very reminiscent of classic Fallout and Fallout 2
you critically miss and your gun blows up, causing x damage Yeah. That happens in FO2. And it's a real pain in the ass when it does :p
Hopefully it's more than you that's interested though. I hardly think we can have a tournament with just one person.
Yeah, I agree. Kinda need at least a few people, preferably enough to fill a tier >.<
This seems neat, I'm in. c:
Cool, at the very least we can have you two duel each other. Maybe others will start joining in afterwards.
